The Aggregates, Sources, and Constituents

• The Five Aggregates ཕུང་པོ་ལྔ།
• The Twelve Sources སྐྱེ་མཆེད་བཅུ་གཉིས།
• The Eighteen Constituents ཁམས་བཅོ་བརྒྱད།

ཆོས་ཐམས་ཅད་ཕུང་ཁམས་སྐྱེ་མཆེད་གསུམ་དུ་འདུ་སྟེ། གཞི་གྲུབ་ན་དེ་གསུམ་གང་རུང་ཡིན་དགོས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
All phenomena are included within the three (aggregates, sources, and constituents) because if it is an established basis, then it is necessarily one of those three. This is because:

• All physical phenomena are included by way of being in the nature of the form aggregate;
  གཟུགས་ཅན་ཐམས་ཅད་གཟུགས་ཀྱི་ཕུང་པོར་རང་གི་ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་ཡིན་པའི་ཚུལ་གྱིས་བསྡུས།
• The consciousness aggregate and seven mental constituents (see: here) are included by way of being in the nature of the mental-source;
  རྣམ་ཤེས་ཀྱི་ཕུང་པོ་དང་སེམས་ཀྱི་ཁམས་བདུན་ཡིད་ཀྱི་སྐྱེ་མཆེད་ཀྱི་རང་གི་ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་ཡིན་པའི་ཚུལ་གྱིས་བསྡུས།
• All the remaining are included by way of being in the nature of just the phenomena constituent
  ལྷག་མ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཆོས་ཁམས་གཅིག་པུས་རང་གི་ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་ཡིན་པའི་ཚུལ་གྱིས་བསྡུས་པའི་ཕྱིར།

ཕུང་པོ་ལྔ། སྐྱེ་མཆེད་བཅུ་གཉིས། ཁམས་བཅོ་བརྒྱད་དུ་སྟོན་པ་ལ་དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ།
Purposes for indicating the five aggregates, twelve sources, and eighteen constituents:

1. In order to overcome the three types of obscuration རྨོངས་པ་རྣམ་པ་གསུམ་ཟློག་པའི་ཕྱིར་དང༌།
2. In order to appease those of sharp, middling, and dull faculties དབང་པོ་རྣོ་འབྲིང་རྟུལ་གསུམ་རྗེས་སུ་གཟུང་བའི་ཕྱིར་དང༌།
3. In order to appease those who prefer brief, middling, and extensive elaborations with words
   ཚིག་གི་སྤྲོས་པ་མདོར་བསྡུས་དང༌། འབྲིང་དང༌། རྒྱས་པ་འདོད་པ་རྗེས་སུ་གཟུང་བའི་ཆེད་དུ་དེ་ལྟར་བསྟན་པའི་ཕྱིར།

The first is established because: དང་པོ་གྲུབ་སྟེ།
4. In order to overcome the apprehension of the mental factors collectively as the self, the five aggregates are indicated སེམས་བྱུང་ལ་རིལ་པོར་བདག་ཏུ་འཛིན་པ་ཟློག་པའི་ཕྱིར་དུ་ཕུང་པོ་ལྔ།
5. In order to overcome the obscuration of form collectively as the self, the twelve sources are indicated
གཟུགས་ལ་རིལ་པོར་བདག་ཏུ་རྨོངས་པ་ཟློག་པའི་ཕྱིར་དུ། སྐྱེ་མཆེད་བཅུ་གཉིས།
6. In order to overcome the obscuration of the mind collectively as the self, the eighteen constituents are indicated སེམས་ལ་རིལ་པོའི་བདག་ཏུ་རྨོངས་པ་ཟློག་པའི་ཕྱིར་དུ་ཁམས་བཅོ་བརྒྱད་བསྟན་པའི་ཕྱིར།

The second is established because: གཉིས་པ་གྲུབ་སྟེ།

1. In order to appease those of sharp faculty, the five aggregates are indicated དབང་རྣོན་རྗེས་སུ་གཟུང་ཕྱིར་དུ་ཕུང་པོ་ལྔ།
2. In order to appease those of middling faculty, the twelve sources are indicated
   དེ་འབྲིང་རྗེས་སུ་གཟུང་བའི་ཕྱིར་དུ་སྐྱེ་མཆེད་བཅུ་གཉིས།
3. In order to appease those of dull faculty, the eighteen constituents are indicated
   དབང་རྟུལ་རྗེས་སུ་གཟུང་བའི་ཕྱིར་དུ་ཁམས་བཅོ་བརྒྱད་བསྟན་པའི་ཕྱིར།

The third is established because: གསུམ་པ་གྲུབ་སྟེ།

1. In order to appease those who prefer a brief elaboration with words, the five aggregates are indicated
   ཚིག་གི་སྤྲོས་པ་མདོར་བསྡུས་པ་འདོད་པ་རྗེས་སུ་བཟུང་བའི་ཕྱིར་དུ་ཕུང་པོ་ལྔ།
2. In order to appease those who prefer a middling elaboration with words, the twelve sources are indicated
   བར་མ་འདོད་པ་རྗེས་སུ་གཟུང་བའི་ཕྱིར་དུ་སྐྱེ་མཆེད་བཅུ་གཉིས།
3. In order to appease those who prefer an extensive elaboration with words, the eighteen constituents are indicated རྒྱས་པར་འདོད་པ་རྗེས་སུ་གཟུང་བའི་ཕྱིར་དུ་ཁམས་བཅོ་བརྒྱད་བསྟན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
