How to Rely upon the Spiritual Teacher

The Ten Qualities of the Spiritual Teacher to be relied upon: བསྟེན་བྱ་དགེ་བའི་བཤེས་གཉེན་གྱི་མཚན་ཉིད་ནི།

1. Higher Training in Ethics ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་ཀྱི་བསླབ་པ།
2. Higher Training in Concentration ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་གྱི་བསླབ་པ།
3. Higher Training in Wisdom ཤེས་རབ་ཀྱི་བསླབ་པ།
4. Learned མང་དུ་ཐོས་པ།
5. Wisdom realising the selflessness of phenomena ཆོས་བདག་མེད་པར་རྟོགས་པའི་ཤེས་རབ།
6. Greater qualities ཡོན་ཏན་ལྷག་པ།
7. Skilled in teaching སྨྲ་མཁས།
8. Compassion བརྩེ་བ།
9. Joyous Effort བརྩོན་འགྲུས།
10. Tireless མི་ངལ་བ།

The Five Qualities of the Student who relies: སྟེན་བྱེད་སློབ་མ་ནི།

1. Remaining unbiased གཟུ་བོར་གནས་པ།
2. Intelligent བློ་གྲོས་དང་ལྡན་པ།
3. Diligent དོན་གཉེར་ཆེ་བ།
4. Respectful towards the Dharma and the teacher ཆོས་དང་ཆོས་སྨྲ་བ་ལ་གུས་པ།
5. Focus ཡིད་གཏོད་པ།

The Two Ways of Relying: བསྟེན་པའི་ཚུལ་ལ་གཉིས།

1. Reliance through thought བསམ་པས་བསྟེན་ཚུལ།
   1. Training in faith, the root རྩ་བ་དད་པ་སྦྱང་བ།
   2. Being respectful, recalling their kindness བཀའ་དྲིན་རྗེས་སུ་དྲན་ཏེ་གུས་པར་བྱ་བ།
2. Reliance through action སྦྱོར་བས་བསྟེན་ཚུལ།
   1. Making material offerings ཡོ་བྱད་འབུལ་བ།
   2. Respecting and serving with body and speech ལུས་ངག་གིས་བསྙེན་བཀུར་བ།
   3. Practicing in accordance with their teachings བཀའ་བཞིན་དུ་བསྒྲུབ་པ།

The Nine Attitudes of Relying in general: བསྟེན་པའི་བསམ་པ་སྤྱིར་བསྟན་པ་ནི།

1. Like an obedient child བུ་མཛངས་པ་ལྟ་བུའི་སེམས།
2. Like a Vajra རྡོ་རྗེ་ལྟ་བུའི་སེམས།
3. Like the earth ས་ལྟ་བུའི་སེམས།
4. Like a mountain-range ཁོར་ཡུག་གི་རི་ལྟ་བུའི་སེམས།
5. Like a worldly servant འཇིག་རྟེན་གྱི་བྲན་ལྟ་བུའི་སེམས།
6. Like a sweeper ཕྱག་དར་བ་ལྟ་བུའི་སེམས།
7. Like a vehicle / Like a rope ཐེག་པ་ལྟ་བུའི་སེམས། ཐག་པ་ལྟ་བུའི་སེམས།
8. Like a dog ཁྱི་ལྟ་བུའི་སེམས།
9. Like a ferry གྲུ་ལྟ་བུའི་སེམས།
