Afflictive obscurations

སྒྲིབ་པ་གང་ཞིག གཙོ་བོར་ཐར་པ་ཐོབ་པ་ལ་བར་དུ་གཅོད་བྱེད་དེ། ཉོན་སྒྲིབ་ཀྱི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition: That which is:

1. An obscuration; and
2. Mainly functions to hinder the attainment of liberation.

Divisions:

1. Acquired afflictive obscurations ཉོན་སྒྲིབ་ཀུན་བརྟགས།
2. Innate afflictive obscurations ཉོན་སྒྲིབ་ལྷན་སྐྱེས།

Their abandonment

In terms of the Hinayana: ཐེག་དམན་གྱི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ན།

• Abandonment of the afflictive obscurations starts from the Dharma Forbearance in relation to suffering of the Hinayana path of seeing; ཐེག་དམན་གྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཆོས་བཟོད་ནས་ཉོན་སྒྲིབ་སྤོང་བའི་མགོ་རྩོམ་ཞིང་།
• The attainment of Hinayana Arhat and abandonment of the afflicted obscurations is simultaneous.
  ཐེག་དམན་དགྲ་བཅོམ་ཐོབ་པ་དང་ཉོན་སྒྲིབ་སྤངས་པ་དུས་མཉམ།

In terms of the Mahayana: ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ན།

• Abandonment of the afflictive obscurations starts from the Dharma Forbearance in relation to suffering of the Mahayana path of seeing; ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཆོས་བཟོད་ནས་ཉོན་སྒྲིབ་སྤོང་བའི་མགོ་རྩོམ་ཞིང་།
• Attainment of the eighth ground and abandonment of the afflicted obscurations is simultaneous.
  ས་བརྒྱད་པ་ཐོབ་པ་དང་ཉོན་སྒྲིབ་སྤངས་པ་དུས་མཉམ།

There are nine rounds (great, middling and small) of afflictions that are objects of abandonment of the Mahayana path of meditation: ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་སྒོམ་སྤང་ཉོན་མོངས་ཆེ་འབྲིང་ཆུང་ངུ་དགུ་ཡོད་ཅིང་།

• The first six are gradually abandoned by the second through the seventh grounds;
  དང་པོ་དྲུག་ས་གཉིས་པ་ནས་བདུན་པའི་བར་གྱིས་རིམ་བཞིན་སྤོང་།
• The first uninterrupted path of the seventh ground abandons the small of the middling afflictions that are objects of abandonment of the path of meditation;
  ས་བདུན་པའི་བར་ཆད་མེད་ལམ་སྐྱེ་ཐེབས་དང་པོ་དེས་སྒོམ་སྤང་ཉོན་མོངས་འབྲིང་གི་ཆུང་ངུ་སྤོང་བར་བྱེད་ལ།
• The uninterrupted path of the final moment of the seventh ground simultaneously abandons the three rounds of small afflictions that are objects of abandonment of the path of meditation.
  ས་བདུན་པའི་བར་ཆད་མེད་ལམ་སྐད་ཅིག་ཐ་མ་དེས་སྒོམ་སྤང་ཉོན་མོངས་ཆུང་ངུ་སྐོར་གསུམ་པོ་དེ་ཅིག་ཅར་དུ་སྤོང་བར་བྱེད།
