Illumination of the Thought
ནམ་ཞིག་བདེན་འཛིན་དེས་བཟུང་བའི་བདེན་གྲུབ་རིགས་པས་ཁེགས་པ་ན། སྒྱུ་མ་མཁན་བཞིན་དུ་ཕྱི་ནང་གི་ཆོས་རྣམས་ལ་
ནང་གི་བློའི་དབང་གིས་མ་བཞག་པའི་སྡོད་ལུགས་ཡོད་པར་མི་འཛིན་པར། བློའི་དབང་གིས་བཞག་པའི་ཡོད་པ་ཙམ་དུ་ཤེས་པར་འགྱུར་རོ།
Whenever true establishment as it is apprehended by the apprehension of true existence is refuted, then just like the magician, one will not apprehend inner and outer phenomena as existing [by way of] a mode of abiding that is not posited through the force of an inner awareness but rather will know them as merely existing [by way of] being posited through the force of awareness.
ཚད་མས་མི་གནོད་པའི་བློའི་དབང་གིས་བཞག་པ་རྣམས་ཐ་སྙད་དུ་ཡོད་པར་འདོད་ཀྱི། བློའི་དབང་གིས་གང་བཞག་ཐམས་ཅད་ཐ་སྙད་དུ་ཡོད་པར་མི་འདོད་དོ།
[Phenomena] that are posited through the force of an awareness that is not undermined by valid cognition is asserted as existing conventionally, but not everything posited through the force of awareness is asserted as existing conventionally.
Lamrim Chenmo
ཐ་སྙད་དུ་ཡོད་པར་འདོད་པ་དང་མེད་པར་འདོད་པ་ནི་ཅི་འདྲ་བ་ཞིག་གི་སྒོ་ནས་འཇོག་པ་ཡིན་སྙམ་ན།
How do we posit asserting something as conventionally existent and conventionally non-existent?
Something that is:
- Renown to conventional consciousness; ཐ་སྙད་པའི་ཤེས་པ་ལ་གྲགས་པ་ཡིན་པ་དང་།
- Its meaning as renown is not undermined by other conventional valid cognitions; and
ཇི་ལྟར་གྲགས་པའི་དོན་དེ་ལ་ཐ་སྙད་པའི་ཚད་མ་གཞན་གྱིས་གནོད་པ་མེད་པ་དང༌། - It is not undermined by reasoning correctly analysing the ultimate / whether or not it inherently exists
དེ་ཁོ་ན་ཉིད་ལའམ་རང་བཞིན་ཡོད་མེད་ཚུལ་བཞིན་དུ་དཔྱོད་པའི་རིགས་པས་གནོད་པ་མི་འབབ་པ་ཞིག་ནི་
ཐ་སྙད་དུ་ཡོད་པར་འདོད་ལ། དེ་དག་ལས་བཟློག་པ་ནི་མེད་པར་འདོད་དོ།
Is asserted as existing conventionally; the opposite from that is asserted as not.
Renown to conventional consciousness
ཐ་སྙད་པའི་ཤེས་པ་ནི། ཆོས་གང་ལའང་ཇི་ལྟར་སྣང་བ་ལྟར་གྱི་རྗེས་སུ་འཇུག་པ་ཙམ་ཡིན་གྱི། སྣང་བའི་དོན་དེ་བློ་ལ་དེ་ལྟར་སྣང་བ་ཙམ་ཡིན་ནམ།
འོན་ཏེ་དོན་གྱི་ཡིན་ཚུལ་ལ་དེ་ལྟར་གྲུབ་པ་ཡིན་སྙམ་དུ་མི་དཔྱོད་པའི་ཤེས་པ་མ་བརྟགས་པར་འཇུག་པ་རྣམས་སོ།
Conventional knowledge engages phenomena only in accordance with how they appear; it is non-investigative engagement, knowledge that does not analyse whether the appearing object merely appears to the awareness as such or whether the object's mode of being is established as such.
དེ་ཉིད་ལ་མ་དཔྱད་པའི་ཤེས་པ་ཞེས་བྱ་ཡི། བརྟག་པ་ཡེ་མི་བྱེད་པ་ནི་མིན་ནོ།
It is referred to as a non-analytical knowledge, but it is not that it does not investigate whatsoever.
གྲུབ་མཐས་བློ་མ་བསྒྱུར་བའི་འཇིག་རྟེན་པ་ཁོ་ནའི་རྒྱུད་ལ་ཡོད་པར་མི་བཟུང་ངོ་། གྲུབ་མཐས་བློ་བསྒྱུར་བ་ལའང་། ཇི་ལྟར་ཐ་སྙད་དུ་གྲགས་པ་ལྟར་རམ་འོན་ཏེ་
དེ་ཁོ་ན་ཉིད་དུ་དེ་ལྟར་གནས་སམ་ཞེས་དཔྱོད་པའི་བློ་མང་པོ་ཡོད་ཀྱང་དེའི་ཤེས་པ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཡིན་ཚུལ་ཇི་ལྟར་ཡིན་དཔྱོད་པའི་ཤེས་པ་ཡིན་ག་ལ་དགོས།
It is not taken to exist only in the continua of worldly beings whose awarenesses have not been affected by tenets. Although there are many awarenesses analysing how things exist in accordance with conventional renown and whether they abide as such in suchness in the continua of those whose minds have been affected by tenets, not all of their consciousnesses necessarily analyse what things' mode of being is.
Being undermined by other conventional valid cognition ཐ་སྙད་པའི་ཚད་མ་གཞན་གྱིས་གནོད་པ་ནི།
དཔེར་ན། ཐག་པ་ལ་སྦྲུལ་ལོ་སྙམ་པ་དང་སྨིག་རྒྱུ་ལ་ཆུའོ་སྙམ་དུ་འཛིན་པ་ན་ཡིན་ལུགས་ལ་ཇི་ལྟར་ཡིན་དཔྱོད་པ་མེད་པའི་བློས་བཟུང་བ་ཡིན་མོད་ཀྱང༌།
དེས་བཟུང་བའི་དོན་ལ་ཐ་སྙད་པའི་ཚད་མས་གནོད་པས་དེ་དག་ཐ་སྙད་དུའང་མེད་པ་ཡིན་ནོ།
For example, when apprehending a rope as a snake and a mirage as water, although they are apprehended by an awareness that does not analyse their mode of being, they do not conventionally exist due to the meaning apprehended by that [awareness] being undermined by conventional valid cognition.
རང་བཞིན་ཡོད་མེད་ཚུལ་བཞིན་དུ་དཔྱོད་པའི་རིགས་པས་གནོད་པ་མི་འབབ་པ་ནི།
Not being undermined by reasoning correctly analysing whether or not it inherently exists
ཐ་སྙད་དུ་འཇོག་པའི་དོན་རྣམས་ཐ་སྙད་པའི་ཚད་མས་གྲུབ་དགོས་ཀྱང་།
རང་བཞིན་ཡོད་མེད་ཚུལ་བཞིན་དུ་དཔྱོད་པའི་རིགས་པའི་ཤེས་པས་ནི་རྣམ་པ་ཐམས་ཅད་དུ་མི་གནོད་པ་ངེས་པར་དགོས་ཀྱི།
རིགས་པ་དེས་ཡོད་པར་གྲུབ་ན་ནི་རང་གི་ངོ་བོས་ཡོད་པར་གྲུབ་པ་ཡིན་པས་ཐ་སྙད་པའི་དོན་ཡིན་པར་འགལ་བ་ཡིན་ནོ།
Although conventionally posited objects are necessarily established by conventional valid cognition, it is necessary that they are not undermined in any way by a reasoning consciousness correctly analysing whether or not they inherently exist. If such reasoning were to establish [something] as existing, then it would be established as existing by way of its own nature and therefore would contradict it being a conventional object.
