Divisions of superficial causes of error

There are two divisions superficial causes of error: འཕྲལ་གྱི་འཁྲུལ་རྒྱུ་ལ་གཉིས་ཡོད་དེ།

1. Those undermining the physical sense-faculties དབང་པོ་གཟུགས་ཅན་པ་ལ་གནོད་པ།
   1. Where the cause of error is internal འཁྲུལ་རྒྱུ་ནང་ལ་ཡོད་པ།
      Examples:
      1. Eye-floaters that act as the cause for a mistaken consciousness to which falling hairs appear
         རབ་རིབ་ཀྱིས་ནི་སྐྲ་ཤད་འཛག་སྣང་གི་དབང་ཤེས་འཁྲུལ་པའི་རྒྱུ་བྱེད།
      2. Eye-disease that acts as the cause for a mistaken consciousness to which a white conch appears yellow མིག་སེར་གྱིས་དུང་དཀར་སེར་པོར་སྣང་བའི་དབང་ཤེས་འཁྲུལ་པའི་རྒྱུ་བྱེད།
      3. Eating dhadura acts as the cause for a mistaken consciousness to which the ground appears golden ད་དྷུ་ར་ཟོས་པས་ས་གཞི་གསེར་དུ་སྣང་བའི་དབང་ཤེས་འཁྲུལ་པའི་རྒྱུ་བྱེད།
   2. Where the cause of error is external འཁྲུལ་རྒྱུ་ཕྱི་ལ་ཡོད་པ།
      Examples:
      1. A mirror (when meeting a face) acts as the cause for a mistaken consciousness to which an illusory face appears in the mirror just like a real face
         མེ་ལོང་དང་བྱད་བཞིན་ཕྲད་པས་ནི་མེ་ལོང་ནང་གི་བྱད་བཞིན་གྱི་གཟུགས་བརྙན་བྱད་བཞིན་དུ་སྣང་བའི་དབང་ཤེས་འཁྲུལ་པའི་རྒྱུ་བྱེད།
      2. Sound in an empty cave acts as the cause for a mistaken consciousness to which an echo appears to be expressive sound
         བྲག་ཕུག་སྟོང་པའི་སྒྲས་བྲག་ཅ་རྗོད་བྱེད་ཀྱི་སྒྲར་སྣང་བའི་དབང་ཤེས་འཁྲུལ་པའི་རྒྱུ་བྱེད།
      3. The proximity of hot-season sunlight with a place with whitish sand acts as the cause for a mistaken consciousness to which a mirage appears to be water
         སོས་ཀའི་ཉི་མའི་འོད་ཟེར་བྱེ་མ་སྐྱ་བོའི་ཡུལ་དང་ཉེ་བས་ནི་སྨིག་སྒྱུ་ལ་ཆུར་སྣང་བའི་དབང་ཤེས་འཁྲུལ་པའི་རྒྱུ་བྱེད།
      4. Medicines and mantras applied by an illusionist act as the cause for a mistaken consciousness to which sticks and stones appear to be horses and elephants
         མིག་འཁྲུལ་མཁན་གྱིས་སྦྱར་བའི་སྨན་དང་སྔགས་ཀྱིས་ནི། རྡེའུ་ཤིང་རྟ་གླང་དུ་སྣང་བའི་དབང་ཤེས་འཁྲུལ་པའི་རྒྱུ་བྱེད་དོ།
2. Those undermining the mental sense-faculty ཡིད་དབང་ལ་གནོད་པ།
   1. Bad tenets and pseudo-reasons གྲུབ་མཐའ་ངན་པ་དང་། གཏན་ཚིགས་ལྟར་སྣང་།
      Act as the cause for a mistaken mental consciousness apprehending the self to be permanent and the existence of prakṛti བདག་རྟག་པ་དང་། སྤྱི་གཙོ་བོ་ཡོད་པར་འཛིན་པའི་ཡིད་ཤེས་འཁྲུལ་པའི་རྒྱུ་བྱེད།
   2. Sleep and so forth གཉིད་ལ་སོགས་པ།
      Acts as the cause for a mistaken mental consciousness apprehending that the elephant appearing in a dream is an [actual] elephant རྨི་ལམ་ན་གླང་པོ་ཆེ་སྣང་བ་ལ་གླང་པོ་ཆེར་འཛིན་པའི་ཡིད་ཤེས་འཁྲུལ་པའི་རྒྱུ་བྱེད།
