Explanation of the classifications of emptiness (Gomde)
རང་བཞིན་གྱིས་སྟོང་པའི་བདག་མེད་འདི་ནི་ཆོས་ཅན། མདོར་བསྡུ་ན་རྣམ་པ་གཉིས་སུ་ཡོད་དེ།
སྟོན་པ་བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་ཀྱི་སྟོང་གཞི་ཆོས་དང་གང་ཟག་གི་དབྱེ་བས་རྣམ་པ་གཉིས་གསུངས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
The subject - selflessness, i.e. emptiness of inherent existence - if subsumed, there are two types because the Teacher Bhagavan taught two types through the divisions of the bases of emptiness into phenomena and persons.
འོ་ན། དེ་ལྟར་གསུངས་པའི་དགོས་པ་གང་ཞེ་ན།
In that case, what is the purpose of his teachings as such?
སྟོན་པས་དེ་ལྟར་གསུངས་པ་ལ་ཆོས་ཅན། དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ། ཐེག་པ་ཆེ་ཆུང་གི་འགྲོ་བ་རྣམས་སྒྲིབ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་འཆིང་བ་ལས་རྣམ་པར་གྲོལ་བར་བྱ་བའི་ཆེད་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
The subject - the Teacher teachings as such - there is a purpose: It is in order for migrators of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles to be liberated from the bondage of the two obscurations.
སྟོང་ཉིད་མདོར་བསྡུས་ནས་བསྟན་པའི་དགོས་པ་དེ་ལྟར་ཡིན་ན། རྒྱས་པར་བཤད་པའི་དགོས་པ་གང་ཞེ་ན།
If the purpose for indicating emptiness in summary is as such, then what is the purpose for an extensive explanation?
སྔར་དེ་ལྟར་གསུངས་པའི་བདག་མེད་གཉིས་པོ་འདི་ནི་ཆོས་ཅན། སྟོན་པས་སླར་ཡང་གདུལ་བྱ་རྣམས་ལ་ཕྱེ་སྟེ་རྣམ་པ་མང་པོར་གསུངས་པ་དེ་ལ་དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ།
གདུལ་བྱ་གདུལ་བའི་ཕྱིར་དུ་སྐལ་བ་དང་འཚམ་པར་དེ་ལྟར་ཕྱེ་བའི་ཕྱིར།
The subject - the two selflessnesses that were initially taught as such - there is a purpose for the Teacher to then teach disciples by differentiating those into many types: In order to tame disciples, they were differentiated as such in accordance with their fortune.
འོ་ན། གདུལ་བྱ་རྣམས་ལ་ཕྱེ་སྟེ་རྣམ་མང་གསུངས། ཞེས་བཤད་ན། རྣམ་པ་མང་པོ་ཇི་ལྟར་གསུངས་ཞེ་ན།
In that case, if it is explained that they were taught to disciples through differentiating many types, what are the many types indicated?
བདག་མེད་དེ་གཉིས་ལ་གཉིས་ལས་མང་བར་ཕྱེ་ནས་གསུངས་པ་ཡིན་ཏེ། བསམ་པ་སྣ་ཚོགས་པའི་གདུལ་བྱའི་ངོར་རྣམ་པ་མང་པོའི་སྤྲོས་པ་དང་བཅས་ཏེ།
Those two selflessnesses were taught through differentiating into more than two because, from the perspective of disciples' varying attitudes, they were taught in Mahayana sutras together with elaboration into many types:
- Explaining sixteen: from inner emptiness and up to emptiness of nature of non-things; and
ནང་སྟོང་པ་ཉིད་ནས་དངོས་པོ་མེད་པའི་ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྟོང་པ་ཉིད་ཀྱི་བར་བཅུ་དྲུག་ཏུ་བཤད་ནས། - Together with their further summary into four (i.e. emptiness of things, emptiness of non-things, emptiness of inherent existence, and emptiness of other things), the twenty emptinesses.
སླར་ཡང་མདོར་བསྡུས་ཏེ། དངོས་པོ་སྟོང་པ་ཉིད་དང་། དངོས་པོ་མེད་པ་སྟོང་པ་ཉིད་དང་། རང་བཞིན་སྟོང་པ་ཉིད་དང་། གཞན་གྱི་དངོས་པོ་སྟོང་པ་ཉིད་དང་།
བཞིར་བཤད་པའི་སྟོང་ཉིད་ཉི་ཤུ་པོ་དེ་དག་ནི་ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་མདོའི་དོན་དུ་ཡང་བཞེད་པ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
དེར་ཐལ། དེ་དག་སྟོན་པའི་མདོ་སྡེ་ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་མདོ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
That follows because sutras indicating those are Mahayana sutras.
Extensive explanation of their individual divisions ཕྱེ་བ་སོ་སོའེ་དོན་རྒྱས་པར་བཤད་པ།
The four emptinesses:
སྟོང་ཉིེད་ཀྱི་དབྱེ་བ་དང་། སྟོང་ཚུལ་དེ་དག་ནི་ཆོས་ཅན། རང་དགར་བཤད་པ་མ་ཡིན་ཏེ།
ཤེས་རབ་ཀྱི་ཕ་རོལ་ཏུ་ཕྱིན་པའི་ཚུལ་ལུགས་སྟོན་པའི་མདོ་ལས་འདིར་བཤད་པ་དེ་སྐད་དུ་རབ་ཏུ་བསྒྲགས་པ་སྟེ་བཤད་པ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར་རོ།
The subject - these divisions of emptiness and their mode of emptiness - are not explained arbitrarily because they are explained in this context in accordance with their proclamation in sutras indicating the system of the Perfection of Wisdom.
