Gelong as the root of the teachings

| If the root of the teachings is the Gelong, then It is difficult also for the Gelong to abide. Through a mind together with the observed-object, It is difficult for Nirvāṇa to abide. |
བསྟན་རྩ་དགེ་སློང་ཉིད་ཡིན་ན། དགེ་སློང་ཉིད་ཀྱང་དཀའ་བར་གནས། སེམས་ནི་དམིགས་དང་བཅས་རྣམས་ཀྱིས། མྱ་ངན་འདས་པའང་དཀའ་བར་གནས། |
བསྟན་པའི་རྩ་བ་ཉན་ཐོས་དགྲ་བཅོམ་ལ་སོགས་པ་དགེ་སློང་དུ་བཞག་པར་དཀའ་བ་ཡིན་པར་ཐལ། སྟོང་ཉིད་རྟོགས་པའི་ཉན་ཐོས་དགྲ་བཅོམ་མེད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
It follows that it is difficult to posit the root of the teachings (i.e. Hearer Arhats and so forth) as Gelongs because Hearer Arhats that realise emptiness do not exist.
ཁྱབ་སྟེ། སེམས་བདེན་འཛིན་གྱི་དམིགས་པ་དང་བཅས་པའི་ལམ་གྱིས་མྱང་འདས་ཐོབ་པར་དཀའ་བའི་ཕྱིར།
There is pervasion because it is difficult to attain Nirvana by means of a path that is a mind together with the observed-object of the apprehension of true existence.
ཉན་ཐོས་དགྲ་བཅོམ་པ་ལ་བསྟན་པའི་རྩ་བ་ཞེས་བརྗོད་པའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ཡོད་དེ།
Reason for referring to Hearer Arhats as "root of the teachings"
Jetsunpa presents two systems:
- Buton and Gyaltsab: who interpret it as the main Gelong (དགེ་སློང་གཙོ་བོ།)
- Khedrup Je: who interprets it as the ultimate Gelong (དོན་དམ་པའི་དགེ་སློང་།)
བུ་སྟོན་ལ་སོགས་པའི་མཁས་པ་ཁ་ཅིག སོ་སོར་ཐར་པ་དེ་བསྟན་པའི་རྩ་བ་ཡིན་ཅིང་།
ཉན་ཐོས་དགྲ་བཅོམ་པ་དེ་སོ་སོ་ཐར་པའི་སྡོམ་པ་ཉམས་སུ་ལེན་པའི་རྟེན་གྱི་གང་ཟག་གི་གཙོ་བོ་ཡིན་པའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་གྱིས་དེ་ལྟར་བརྗོད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Buton etc.: Individual liberation is the root of the teachings and Hearer Arhats are the main persons that are the supports for practicing the individual liberation vows.
སྤྱོད་འཇུག་དར་ཊིཀ།འོད་སྲུང་དང་། ཉེ་བ་འཁོར་དང་། ཀུན་དགའ་བོ་ལ་སོགས་པའི་དགྲ་བཅོམ་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་བཀའ་བསྡུ་བ་མཛད་པ་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་
སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱི་ལུང་རྟོགས་ཀྱི་བསྟན་པ་འཇིག་རྟེན་གྱི་ཁམས་འདིར་ཡུན་རིང་དུ་གནས་པ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར་དང་།
འཕགས་པའི་གནས་བརྟན་བཅུ་དྲུག་སོགས་ཀྱིས་སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱི་བསྟན་པ་ཡུན་རིང་དུ་གནས་པར་མཛད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Gyaltsab Je's Commentary: In dependence upon Arhats such as Kashyapa, Upali, Ananda, and so forth having compiled the Teachings, the Buddha's teachings of scripture and realisation have remained for a long time in this world-system and also the actions of the Sixteen Arhats and so forth for the Buddha's teachings to remain for a long time.
བདེན་མེད་མ་རྟོགས་ན་དོན་དམ་པའི་དགེ་སློང་འཕགས་པའི་གང་ཟག་བཞག་ཏུ་མི་རུང་བ་དང༌།
སེམས་བདེན་འཛིན་གྱི་དམིགས་པ་དང་བཅས་པའི་ལམ་གྱིས་མྱང་འདས་མི་འཐོབ་པར་བསྟན་ནོ།
Khedrup Je's Dose of Emptiness: This [verse] indicates that ff one has not realised the lack of true existence, then it is unsuitable to posit them as an ultimate Gelong, i.e. an arya person, and that Nirvana will not be attained through a mind, i.e. a path, together with the observed-object of the apprehension of true existence.
