བསམ་གཏན་གྱི་དངོས་གཞི་ཐོབ་པའི་ཕྱིར་མི་འོང་དང་། དེ་ཐོབ་པའི་དགྲ་བཅོམ་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་བྱེད་ཅིང་། རྒྱུན་ཞུགས་དང་ཕྱིར་འོང་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་དེ་མི་བྱེད་དེ།
དེ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་བསམ་གཏན་གྱི་དངོས་གཞི་མ་ཐོབ་པའི་ཕྱིར།
It is engaged in by Non-Returners that have attained an actual concentration and by Foe-Destroyers that have attained that; Stream-Enterers and Once-Returners do not engage in it because they have not attained an actual concentration
In what realms do they cultivate alternations
དང་པོར་འདོད་པའི་ཁམས་སུ་གླིང་གསུམ་དུ་སྤེལ་ཞིང་ཕྱི་ནས་གཟུགས་སུ་ཡང་སྤེལ་བ་ཡིན།
Initially, [there are those who cultivate] alternations in the three continents of the Desire Realm and later they also [cultivate] alternations in the Form Realm.
What is initially used for alternations
དང་པོར་བསམ་གཏན་བཞི་པའི་དངོས་གཞིའི་སྙོམས་འཇུག་ལ་སྤེལ་བར་བྱེད་དེ། དེ་བསམ་གཏན་གྱི་སྐྱོན་བརྒྱད་དང་བྲལ་ཞིང་སྤེལ་སྒོམ་འགྲུབ་སླ་བའི་ཕྱིར།
Initially, they engage in alternations of the meditative absorption of the actual fourth concentration because it is free from the eight faults of concentration and easier to accomplish cultivating alternations with.
The purpose of alternating
- Non-Returners engage in cultivating alternations in order to be born in Pure Abodes
ཕྱིར་མི་འོང་རྣམས་གནས་གཙང་དུ་སྐྱེ་བའི་ཕྱིར། - Sharp faculty Foe-Destroyers in order to happily abide in the present life
ཉན་ཐོས་དགྲ་བཅོམ་དབང་རྣོན་རྣམས་མཐོང་ཆོས་ལ་བདེ་བར་གནས་པའི་ཕྱིར། - Dull faculty Foe-Destroyers in order to not degenerate from having abandoned the afflictions
ཉན་ཐོས་དགྲ་བཅོམ་དབང་རྟུལ་རྣམས་ཉོན་མོངས་སྤངས་པའི་སྤངས་པ་ལས་མི་ཉམས་པར་བྱ་བའི་ཕྱིར།
The way of alternating
བསམ་གཏན་གྱི་དངོས་གཞི་སྙོམས་འཇུག་ཟག་མེད་སྐད་ཅིག་མ་གཅིག་དང་། དེ་ཟག་བཅས་སྐད་ཅིག་མ་གཅིག་དང་།
དེ་ཟག་མེད་སྐད་ཅིག་མ་གཅིག་སྤེལ་ནས་སྙོམས་པར་འཇུག་པ་ནི་རིང་སྦྱོར་ཡིན།
Distant Application: Entering absorption by alternating:
- One instant of an uncontaminated meditative absorption of an actual concentration, then
- One instant of a contaminated one, and then
- One instant of an uncontaminated one
དེ་རྗེས་ཟག་མེད་སྐད་ཅིག་མ་གཉིས། དེ་རྗེས་ཟག་བཅས་སྐད་ཅིག་མ་གཉིས། དེ་རྗེས་ཟག་མེད་སྐད་ཅིག་མ་གཉིས་སྤེལ་ནས་སྙོམས་པར་འཇུག་པ་ནི་ཉེ་སྦྱོར་ཡིན།
Close Application: Entering absorption by subsequently alternating:
- Two instances of uncontaminated, then
- Two instances of contaminated, and then
- Two instances of uncontaminated
Divisions of cultivating alternations
གནས་གཙང་དུ་སྐྱེ་བའི་རྒྱུ་བསམ་གཏན་གྱི་སྤེལ་སྒོམ་ལ་ལྔ་ཡོད་དེ།
There are five cultivations of alternating concentrations that are causes for birth in the five Pure Abodes:
- The small of three alternations ཆུང་ངུ་གསུམ་སྤེལ།
- The middling of six alternations འབྲིང་དྲུག་སྤེལ།
- The great of nine alternations ཆེན་པོ་དགུ་སྤེལ།
- The very great of twelve alternations ཤིན་ཏུ་ཆེན་པོ་བཅུ་གཉིས་སྤེལ།
- The exceedingly great of fifteen alternations ཆེས་ཤིན་ཏུ་ཆེན་པོ་བཅོ་ལྔ་སྤེལ།
The measure of having accomplished those
བྱེ་བྲག་སྨྲ་བ་རྣམས་དུས་མཐའི་སྐད་ཅིག་མ་གཅིག་ལ་བསམ་གཏན་གྱི་དངོས་གཞི་སྙོམས་འཇུག་ཟག་མེད་སྐད་ཅིག་མ་གཉིས་དང་ཟག་བཅས་སྐད་ཅིག་མ་གཅིག་བསྲེས་ནས་ཇི་ལྟར་འདོད་འདོད་དུ་མཉམ་པར་འཇོག་ནུས་པ་བསམ་གཏན་གྱི་སྤེལ་སྒོམ་གྲུབ་པའི་ཚད་དུ་འདོད།
Vaibhashika: Being able to enter into equipoise in accordance with one’s wishes through combining two instants of uncontaminated meditative absorptions of an actual concentration and one instant of contaminated meditative absorption of an actual concentration within one shortest instant
དེ་མི་འཐད་དེ། སངས་རྒྱས་མ་གཏོགས་པ་3དུས་མཐའི་སྐད་ཅིག་མ་གཅིག་ལ་དེ་ལྟར་མི་ནུས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
This is incorrect because only Buddhas can do as such within one shortest instant.
རང་ལུགས་ནི། རྒྱུན་དང་ལྡན་པའི་སྒོ་ནས་དེ་ལྟར་སྙོམས་པར་འཇུག་ནུས་པར་འདོད།
Our own system: Being able to enter equipoise as such in a continuous manner.
Up a level: Skippers / Half-Skippers / Those who pass away to all abodes
