First concentration

ཡན་ལག་གི་སྒོ་ནས་རང་གི་འོག་ས་འདོད་པ་ལ་འདོད་ཆགས་དང་བྲལ་བའི་བསམ་གཏན་དང་པོའི་དངོས་གཞིའི་སས་བསྡུས་ཀྱི་དགེ་བའི་རིག་པ།
བསམ་གཏན་དང་པོའི་དངོས་གཞིའི་སྙོམས་འཇུག་གི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition: A virtuous knower included within the level of the actual first concentration and that is separated from attachment to its lower level (the desire realm) by way of the branches.

Divisions:

1. Mere ཙམ་པོ་བ།
2. Special ཁྱད་པར་ཅན།

བསམ་གཏན་གྱི་དངོས་གཞིའི་སྙོམས་འཇུག་ཡང་ཡིན། ཚོར་བ་བདེ་བའི་ས་པའི་རིགས་སུ་གནས་པ་ཡང་ཡིན་པའི་གཞི་མཐུན་པར་དམིགས་པ།
དང་པོའི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of the first: That observed as a common locus of:

1. Being an actual meditative absorption of a concentration and
2. Abiding in the class of those with pleasant feelings.

བསམ་གཏན་གྱི་དངོས་གཞིའི་སྙོམས་འཇུག་ཡང་ཡིན། ཚོར་བ་བཏང་སྙོམས་ཀྱི་ས་པའི་རིགས་སུ་གནས་པ་ཡང་ཡིན་པའི་གཞི་མཐུན་པར་དམིགས་པ།
གཉིས་པའི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of the second: That observed as a common locus of:

1. Being an actual meditative absorption of a concentration and
2. Abiding in the class of those with neutral feelings.

བསམ་གཏན་དང་པོའི་དངོས་གཞིའི་སྙོམས་འཇུག་ལ་ཙམ་ཁྱད་གཉིས་སུ་བཞག་ནས། དེ་ཡན་ཆད་ལ་མི་འཇོག་པའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ཡོད་དེ།
Although the actual first concentration has such a division, there is a reason why the rest do not:

• It is possible to have separated from attachment to investigation that is a branch of the first concentration without having separated from attachment to the analysis that is that; whereas
  བསམ་གཏན་དང་པོའི་ཡན་ལག་ཏུ་གྱུར་པའི་རྟོག་པ་ལ་འདོད་ཆགས་དང་བྲལ་ནས་དཔྱོད་པ་ལ་འདོད་ཆགས་དང་མ་བྲལ་བ་ཡོད།
• From the second concentration onwards there is no difference in difficulty wrt separating from attachment to their branches. གཉིས་པ་ཡན་ཆད་ཀྱི་ཡན་ལག་རྣམས་ནང་ཕན་ཚུན་ལ་ཆགས་བྲལ་བྱེད་དཀའ་སླའི་ཁྱད་པར་མེད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
