Progression through definite emergence (GJG)

The definitions of both the concentrations and formless absorptions specify “passed beyond its lower level” (རང་གི་འོག་ས་ལས་འདས་པ།), which is explained respectively as:

• The higher definitively emerging from the coarse branches of the lower
  གོང་མ་གོང་མས་རང་གི་འོག་མ་འོག་མའི་ཡན་ལག་རགས་པ་ལས་ངེས་པར་འབྱུང་བ།
• The higher definitively emerging from the observed-objects of the lower
  གོང་མ་གོང་མས་རང་གི་འོག་མ་འོག་མའི་དམིགས་པ་ལས་ངེས་པར་འབྱུང་།

Then, in the definition of the absorption of cessation it specifies “distinguished by a ceasing of coarse concomitants” (མཚུངས་ལྡན་རགས་པ་བཀག་པས་རབ་ཏུ་ཕྱེ་བ།), with the two “concomitants” being singled out as the mental factors of Feeling and Discrimination.

Putting this information together, in terms of what is principally being definitively emerged from:

• Concentrations: Definite emergence from the Feelings of the lower
• Formless absorptions: Definite emergence from the Discriminations of the lower
• Absorption of cessation: Definite emergence from both Feelings and Discriminations of the lower

This leads to progression being made by way of definitively emerging the respective principal Feeling or Discrimination:

བསམ་གཏན་བཞི་པོ་རྣམས་ནི། ཟག་བཅས་ཀྱི་ཚོར་བ་བདེ་སྡུག་མངོན་འགྱུར་བ་ཕྲ་རགས་ལས་ངེས་པར་འབྱུང་བ་ཚོར་བར་བྱེད་ཀྱི།
ཟག་བཅས་ཀྱི་ཚོར་བ་བཏང་སྙོམས་ལས་ངེས་པར་འབྱུང་བ་ཚོར་བ་མི་བྱེད་དེ།
སོ་སོའི་སྐྱེ་བོ་རང་ག་བ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་འདུ་བྱེད་ཀྱི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ལ་སྡུག་བསྔལ་གྱི་རང་བཞིན་དུ་རྟོགས་པར་དཀའ་བའི་ཕྱིར།
The four concentrations experience feelings that definitively emerge from coarse and subtle manifest contaminated pleasant and unpleasant feelings, but do not experience feelings that definitively emerge from neutral contaminated feelings because it is difficult for normal ordinary beings to realise compounded suffering to be in the nature of suffering.

ཟག་བཅས་ཀྱི་ཚོར་བ་བདེ་སྡུག་མངོན་འགྱུར་བ་ཕྲ་རགས་ལས་ངེས་པར་འབྱུང་བའི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ནས་བསམ་གཏན་བཞི་བཞག་པ་ཡིན་ཏེ།
The four concentrations can be presented in terms of definitively emerging from coarse and subtle manifest contaminated feelings because of being posited respectively in terms of definitively emerging from:

1. Coarse contaminated suffering feelings (mental unhappiness) ཟག་བཅས་ཀྱི་ཚོར་བ་སྡུག་བསྔལ་རགས་པ་ཡིད་མི་བདེ་དང༌།
2. Subtle suffering (negative states of suffering) སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཕྲ་བ་སྡུག་བསྔལ་གྱི་གནས་ངན་ལེན་དང་།
3. Coarse happiness (mental happiness) བདེ་བ་རགས་པ་ཡིད་བདེ་དང་།
4. Subtle [happiness] (faculty of pleasant feelings)
   ཕྲ་བ་བདེ་བའི་དབང་པོ་ལས་ངེས་པར་འབྱུང་བའི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ནས་རིམ་པ་བཞིན་དུ་བསམ་གཏན་བཞིར་བཞག་པའི་ཕྱིར།

ཟག་བཅས་ཀྱི་འདུ་ཤེས་ཕྲ་རགས་ལས་ངེས་པར་འབྱུང་བའི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ནས། གཟུགས་མེད་བཞིར་བཞག་པ་ཡིན་ཏེ། ཟག་བཅས་ཀྱི་འདུ་ཤེས་དེ་ལ།
The four formless absorptions can be presented in terms of definitively emerging from coarse and subtle contaminated discriminations because there are two contaminated discriminations:

1. The discrimination of obstruction ཐོགས་པའི་འདུ་ཤེས་དང་།
   1. Discrimination of obstruction wrt external forms དང་པོ་ལ་ཕྱི་རོལ་གྱི་གཟུགས་ལ་ཐོགས་པའི་འདུ་ཤེས་དང༌།
   2. Its antidote: discrimination of space གཉེན་པོ་ནམ་མཁའི་འདུ་ཤེས་གཉིས།
2. The discrimination apprehending varieties wrt consciousness ནང་རྣམ་ཤེས་ལ་བཀྲ་བར་འཛིན་པའི་འདུ་ཤེས་གཉིས་ཡོད་ཅིང་།
   1. The object of abandonment: relying on consciousness
      ནང་རྣམ་ཤེས་ལ་བཀྲ་བར་འཛིན་པ་ལ་སྤང་བྱ་རྣམ་ཤེས་ལ་བརྟེན་པ་དང༌།
   2. Its antidote: discrimination of nothingness གཉེན་པོ་ཅི་ཡང་མེད་ཀྱི་འདུ་ཤེས་གཉིས་ཏེ་

བཞི་ལས་ངེས་པར་འབྱུང་བའི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ནས། གཟུགས་མེད་བཞིར་རིམ་པ་བཞིན་དུ་བཞག་པའི་ཕྱིར།
