The Four Immeasurables

རང་གི་བདག་རྐྱེན་དུ་གྱུར་པའི་བསམ་གཏན་གྱི་དངོས་གཞིའི་སེམས་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་བརྩེ་བ་སོགས་གང་རུང་གི་རྣམ་པ་ཡང་དག་པར་འཇོག་པའི་ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་ཤེས་རབ་མཚུངས་ལྡན་དང་བཅས་པས་རབ་ཏུ་ཕྱེ་བའི་རིག་པ། ཚད་མེད་ཀྱི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of an immeasurable: A knower distinguished by the concentration and wisdom (together with their concomitants) that thoroughly set upon the aspect of love and so forth in dependence upon the mind of an actual concentration that is its empowering condition.

Divisions:

1. Immeasurable love བྱམས་པ་ཚད་མེད།
2. Immeasurable compassion སྙིང་རྗེ་ཚད་མེད།
3. Immeasurable joy དགའ་བ་ཚད་མེད།
4. Immeasurable equanimity བཏང་སྙོམས་ཚད་མེད།

Etymology:

• Brahmavihārā (ཚངས་པའི་གནས།): due to birth as the deity Brahma in dependence upon their cultivation.
  འདི་དག་བསྒོམས་པ་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་ལྷ་ཚངས་པར་སྐྱེ་བས་ན་དེ་ལྟར་བརྗོད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
• Immeasurable (ཚད་མེད།):
  • Love: due to observing limitless sentient beings དེས་སེམས་ཅན་ཚད་མེད་པ་ལ་དམིགས་པས་ན་དེ་ལྟར་བརྗོད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
  • Compassion: due to being the cause of limitless collections
    དེ་ཚོགས་ཚད་མེད་པའི་རྒྱུར་གྱུར་པས་ན་དེ་ལྟར་བརྗོད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
  • Joy: due to being the cause for attaining limitless dharma
    དེ་ཆོས་ཚད་མེད་པ་ཐོབ་པའི་རྒྱུར་གྱུར་པས་ན་དེ་ལྟར་བརྗོད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
  • Equanimity: due to being the object of limitless exalted wisdom
    དེ་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཚད་མེད་པའི་སྤྱོད་ཡུལ་དུ་གྱུར་པས་ན་དེ་ལྟར་བརྗོད་པའི་ཕྱིར།

ཚད་མེད་པ་དེ་རྣམས་རང་གི་རྒྱུར་གྱུར་པའི་རྐྱེན་བཞི་ལས་སྐྱེ་བ་ཡིན་ཏེ།
The four immeasurables are produced from the four conditions that are their causes:

1. Observed object condition: sentient beings who do not possess happiness, and so forth
   དམིགས་རྐྱེན་བདེ་བ་དང་མི་ལྡན་པའི་སེམས་ཅན་སོགས་དང་།
2. Causal condition: the seed of uncontaminated exalted wisdom on the basis of the mental consciousness
   རྒྱུ་རྐྱེན་ཡིད་ཀྱི་རྣམ་ཤེས་ཀྱི་སྟེང་གི་ཟག་མེད་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཀྱི་ས་བོན་དང་།
3. Empowering condition: the spiritual friend who teaches about the four immeasurables and so forth
   བདག་རྐྱེན་ཚད་མེད་སོགས་སྟོན་པའི་བཤེས་གཉེན།
4. Immediately preceding condition: the immediately preceding knower
   དེ་མ་ཐག་རྐྱེན་རང་གི་སྔ་རོལ་དེ་མ་ཐག་ཏུ་བྱུང་བའི་རིག་པ།

Possess four distinguishing characteristics: ཚད་མེད་པ་དེ་ཁྱད་ཆོས་བཞི་དང་ལྡན་ཏེ།

1. Abandoning their discordant class མི་མཐུན་ཕྱོགས་སྤོང་བའི་ཁྱད་པར།
   Due to functioning to abandon harmful-intent, violence, dislike, harmful intent and attachment, respectively དེ་བཞིས་རིམ་པ་ལྟར་གནོད་སེམས་དང་། རྣམ་འཚེ་དང་། མི་དགའ་བ་དང་། གནོད་སེམས་དང་འདོད་ཆགས་རྣམས་སྤོང་བར་བྱེད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
2. Antidote གཉེན་པོའི་ཁྱད་པར།
   Due to attaining antidotes to the above four by way of being conjoined with non-conceptual exalted wisdom དེ་བཞིས་རིམ་པ་ལྟར་གྲོགས་རྣམ་པར་མི་རྟོག་པའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཀྱིས་ཟིན་པའི་སྒོ་ནས་གནོད་སེམས་སོགས་བཞི་པོ་དེའི་གཉེན་པོ་ཐོབ་པའི་ཕྱིར།
3. Object of observation དམིགས་པའི་ཁྱད་པར།
   Due to each observing all three: sentient beings, phenomena, and the non-observable
   དེ་བཞི་པོ་རེ་རེས་ཀྱང་སེམས་ཅན་དང་ཆོས་དང་དམིགས་པ་མེད་པ་གསུམ་གསུམ་ལ་དམིགས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
4. Function བྱེད་ལས་ཀྱི་ཁྱད་པར།
   Due to functioning to ripen sentient beings དེ་བཞིས་སེམས་ཅན་སྨིན་པར་བྱེད་པའི་ཕྱིར།

Asanga: Possess five distinguishing characteristics: དེ་བཞི་ཁྱད་ཆོས་ལྔ་ལྡན་དུ་བསྟན་ཏེ།

1. Abode གནས།
   Due to relying upon the pure meditative absorption that is its empowering condition
   དེ་བཞི་པོ་དེ་རང་གི་བདག་རྐྱེན་དུ་གྱུར་པའི་བསམ་གཏན་གྱི་དངོས་གཞི་དག་པ་བ་ལ་བརྟེན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
2. Object of observation དམིགས་པ།
   Due to observing sentient beings who: ་་་འི་སེམས་ཅན་རྣམས་ལ་དམིགས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
   1. Do not possess happiness སེམས་ཅན་བདེ་བ་དང་མི་ལྡན་པ་དང་།
   2. Possess suffering སྡུག་བསྔལ་དང་ལྡན་པ་དང་།
   3. Possess happiness བདེ་བ་དང་ལྡན་པ་དང་།
   4. Possess attachment and aversion (the cause of delineating near and far)
      ཉེ་རིང་དུ་གཅོད་པའི་རྒྱུ་ཆགས་སྡང་དང་ལྡན་པ།
3. Aspect རྣམ་པ།
   Due to possessing the aspect wrt those sentient beings of: དེ་བཞིས་སེམས་ཅན་དེ་དག་རིམ་པ་ལྟར་་་འི་རྣམ་པ་ཅན་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
   1. Wishing they meet with happiness བདེ་བ་དང་ཕྲད་པར་འདོད་པ་དང་།
   2. Wishing they are free from suffering སྡུག་བསྔལ་དང་བྲལ་བར་འདོད་པ་དང་།
   3. Wishing they do not separate from their happiness བདེ་བ་དང་མི་འབྲལ་བར་འདོད་པ་དང་།
   4. Wishing they are free from attachment and aversion ཆགས་སྡང་དང་བྲལ་བར་འདོད་པ།
4. Entity ངོ་བོ།
   Due to being included within either concentration or wisdom
   དེ་རྣམས་ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་ཤེས་རབ་གང་རུང་གིས་བསྡུས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
5. Associates གྲོགས།
   Due to possessing the features of minds and mental factors
   དེ་རྣམས་སེམས་དང་སེམས་ལས་བྱུང་བའི་ཁྱད་པར་དང་ལྡན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
