Compositional actions

རང་དང་རྟེན་འབྲེལ་ཚར་གཅིག་ཏུ་གཏོགས་པའི་མ་རིག་པས་ཀུན་ནས་བསླངས་ཤིང་རང་གི་འཕང་བྱར་གྱུར་བའི་ཡང་སྲིད་ཕྱི་མ་འཕེན་བྱེད་ཀྱི་སེམས་བྱུང་སེམས་པ་དེ།
ཡན་ལག་བཅུ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་ནང་ཚན་གྱི་འདུ་བྱེད་ཀྱི་རྟེན་འབྲེལ་གྱི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of compositional action that is a subdivision of the twelve links:
A mental factor of intention that is:

1. Motivated by the ignorance included within the same round of dependent-arising; and
2. Projecting the future rebirth that is its projected-object.

Divisions:

1. Meritorious actions བསོད་ནམས་ཀྱི་ལས། Projecting to:
   1. Four human continents
   2. Six desire realm gods
2. Non-meritorious actions བསོད་ནམས་མ་ཡིན་པའི་ལས། Projecting to: Three lower realms.
3. Immovable actions མི་གཡོ་བའི་ལས། Projecting to:
   1. Seventeen Form Realm abodes
   2. Four Formless Absorptions

General division by way of entity:

1. Actions that are intentions སེམས་པའི་ལས།
   i.e. Mental actions but not covetousness (བརྣབ་སེམས།), harmful intent (གནོད་སེམས།), or wrong view (ལོག་ལྟ།), because those are afflictions and not actions.
2. Intended actions བསམ་པའི་ལས། i.e. actions of Body and Speech, for example:
   1. Body: killing (སྲོག་གཅོད་པ།), stealing (མ་བྱིན་པ་ལེན་པ།), sexual misconduct (ལོག་གཡེམ། མི་ཚངས་པར་སྤྱོད་པ།).
   2. Speech: lying (རྫུན་བཤད་པ།), divisive speech (ཕྲ་མ།), harsh speech (ཚིག་རྩུབ།), meaningless speech (ངག་འཁྱལ།).
      And their virtuous opposites.

General division by way of cause:

1. Contaminated actions ཟག་བཅས་ཀྱི་ལས།
   i.e. mental factors of intention motivated by their afflicted cause.
2. Uncontaminated actions ཟག་མེད་ཀྱི་ལས།
   i.e. mental factors of intention that arose from the subtle exertion of the motivation of the knowledge obscurations that are their cause, without being motivated by just afflictions that are their cause.
   Cause for Hearer and Solitary Realiser Arhats to take birth in pure lands and for Bodhisattvas abiding on the pure grounds to take birth in Saṃsāra for the welfare of others.
3. Actions that are neither དེ་གཉིས་གང་རུང་མ་ཡིན་པའི་ལས།
   e.g. actions that are the entity of non-conceptual exalted wisdom of meditative equipoise.

Divisions of contaminated actions:

• By way of function:
  1. Projecting actions འཕེན་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ལས།
  2. Accomplishing actions འགྲུབ་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ལས།
  3. Completing actions རྫོགས་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ལས།
• By way of mode of arising of fruitions:
  1. Actions that will be experienced in this life མཐོང་ཆོས་ལ་མྱོང་འགྱུར་གྱི་ལས།
  2. Actions that will be experienced in the birth-existence སྐྱེ་གནས་གཞན་ལ་མྱོང་འགྱུར་གྱི་ལས།
  3. Actions that will be experienced at another time ལན་གྲངས་གཞན་ལ་མྱོང་འགྱུར་གྱི་ལས།
  4. Actions indefinite to induce their fruition རྣམ་སྨིན་འབྱིན་པར་མ་ངེས་པའི་ལས།
• By way of mode of experiencing their fruitions:
  1. Actions that will be experienced as happiness བདེ་བ་མྱོང་འགྱུར་གྱི་ལས།
  2. Actions that will be experienced as suffering སྡུག་བསྔལ་མྱོང་འགྱུར་གྱི་ལས།
  3. Actions that will be experienced as neutral བཏང་སྙོམས་མྱོང་འགྱུར་གྱི་ལས།
• By way of realm and attitude: Meritorious etc. see above.

General division:

1. Actions of white fruition རྣམ་སྨིན་དཀར་བའི་ལས།
2. Actions of black fruition རྣམ་སྨིན་གནག་པའི་ལས།
3. Actions that are a mixture of black and white དཀར་ནག་འདྲེས་མའི་ལས།

Related to possibilities between attitude (བསམ་པ།) and application (སྦྱོར་བ།) of the actions.

General division:

1. Done but not accumulated བྱས་ལ་མ་བསགས་པ།
   e.g. action forced to do by another
2. Accumulated but not done བསགས་ལ་མ་བྱས་པ།
   e.g. action done in a dream
3. Both done and accumulated བྱས་བསགས་གཉིས་ཀ་ཚང་བ།
   e.g. complete action of intentional killing
4. Neither of those two དེ་གཉིས་ཀ་མ་ཚང་བའི་ལས།
   e.g. thinking about killing but not doing it

General division:

1. Actions that are vows སྡོམ་པའི་ལས།
   e.g. novice and gelong vows
2. Actions that are non-vows སྡོམ་མིན་གྱི་ལས།
   e.g. actions that, when possessed in one’s continuum, obstruct the arising of all vows in the continuum and continually give rise to Saṃsāra.
3. Interim actions བར་མའི་ལས།
   e.g. pre-ordination ethics (བར་མ་རབ་བྱུང་གི་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས།)
