Ignorance

རང་ཡུལ་ལ་རྨོངས་པའི་རྣམ་པས་འཇུག་པའི་སེམས་བྱུང་། མ་རིག་པའི་མཚན་ཉིད།
General definition: A mental factor that engages its object through the factor of obscuration.

རང་དང་རྟེན་འབྲེལ་ཚར་གཅིག་ཏུ་གཏོགས་པའི་འཕེན་བྱེད་ལས་ཀྱི་ཀུན་སློང་དུ་གྱུར་པའི་དེ་ཁོ་ན་ཉིད་ལ་རྨོངས་པའི་སེམས་བྱུང་།
ཡན་ལག་བཅུ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་ནང་ཚན་དུ་གྱུར་པའི་མ་རིག་པའི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of ignorance that is a subdivision of the twelve links:
A mental factor that is obscured with respect to suchness and is the motivation for the projecting action included within the same round of dependent-arising.

It is neutral (not indicated in scripture), mainly an object of abandonment of the path of meditation, and included within the compositional factors aggregate.

Vaibhashika

• Asserted as: An obscured mental factor that is the discordant class opposite to the knowing exalted wisdom. རིག་པ་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཀྱི་འགལ་ཟླ་མི་མཐུན་ཕྱོགས་སུ་གྱུར་པའི་སེམས་བྱུང་རྨོངས་པ།
• Knowing exalted wisdom is the mental factor of non-ignorance.
• This and view of the transitory collection are mutually inclusive; because the latter is a wisdom.

Sautrantika

• Asserted as: A mental factor that is the discordant class opposite to the knowing exalted wisdom realising the selflessness of persons.
• View of the transitory collection is a type of ignorance.
