Interpretative and Definitive Sutras

ཉན་ཐོས་སྡེ་གཉིས་ཕལ་མོ་ཆེས་སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱི་བཀའ་ཡིན་ན་ངེས་པའི་དོན་ཅན་ཁོ་ན་ཡིན་པས་ཁྱབ་པར་འདོད་ཅིང་
དྲང་ངེས་གཉིས་ཀ་འདོད་པ་ཡང་ཡོད་པར་རྟོག་གེ་འབར་བ་ལས་བཤད་དོ།
(Jangkya tenets:) The two Hearer schools for the most part assert that if it is Buddha Words, then it is pervaded by being only of definitive meaning; however, [Bhavaviveka's] Blaze of Reasoning explains that there are also those who assert both interpretative and definitive meaning sutras.

བྱེ་མདོ་གཉིས་ཀྱིས་ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་སྡེ་སྣོད་སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱི་བཀར་ཁས་མི་ལེན།
Vaibashika and Sautrantika do not assert the Mahayana Basket as Buddha Words.

Cittamatra སེམས་ཙམ་པ།

• Definitive: A sutra whose indicated-meaning is suitable to be taken literally.
  ངེས་དོན་གྱི་མདོ། རང་གི་བསྟན་དོན་སྒྲ་ཇི་བཞིན་དུ་ཁས་བླང་དུ་རུང་བའི་མདོ།
• Interpretative: A sutra whose indicated-meaning is not suitable to be taken literally.
  དྲང་དོན་གྱི་མདོ། དེ་ལྟར་མི་རུང་བའི་མདོ།

Svatantrika རང་རྒྱུད་པ།

• Definitive: A sutra that indicates emptiness as its explicit main subject-matter and is suitable to be asserted literally.
  ངེས་དོན་གྱི་མདོ། སྟོང་ཉིད་དངོས་ཀྱི་བརྗོད་བྱའི་གཙོ་བོར་བྱས་ནས་སྟོན་པའི་སྒྲ་ཇི་བཞིན་དུ་ཁས་བླང་དུ་རུང་བའི་མདོ།
• Interpretative: That observed as either 1) a sutra that takes conventional truth as its explicit main subject-matter or 2) a sutra that is not suitable to be asserted literally.
  དྲང་དོན་གྱི་མདོ། ཀུན་རྫོབ་བདེན་པ་དངོས་ཀྱི་བརྗོད་བྱའི་གཙོ་བོར་བྱེད་པའི་མདོ་དང་། སྒྲ་ཇི་བཞིན་དུ་ཁས་བླང་དུ་མི་རུང་བའི་མདོ་གང་རུང་དུ་དམིགས་པ།

དོན་དམ་བདེན་པ་དངོས་བསྟན་བསྟན་བྱའི་གཙོ་བོར་བྱས་ནས་སྟོན་ཅིང་སྒྲ་ཇི་བཞིན་དུ་ཁས་བླང་དུ་རུང་བའི་མདོར་དམིགས་པ་དེ། ངེས་དོན་གྱི་མདོའི་མཚན་ཉིད་ཡིན།
Definition of a definitive meaning sutra: That observed as a sutra that:

1. Indicates its explicit teaching of ultimate truth in terms of its main indicated-object; and
2. Is suitable to be asserted literally.

དཔེར་ན། རྒྱས་འབྲིང་བསྡུས་གསུམ་ལྟ་བུའོ།
For example, the Extensive, Middling and Brief Mothers.

ཀུན་རྫོབ་བདེན་པ་དངོས་བསྟན་བསྟན་བྱའི་གཙོ་བོར་བྱས་ནས་སྟོན་པའི་མདོ་དང་། སྒྲ་ཇི་བཞིན་དུ་ཁས་བླང་དུ་མི་རུང་བའི་མདོ་གང་རུང་དུ་དམིགས་པ་དེ།
དྲང་དོན་གྱི་མདོའི་མཚན་ཉིད་ཡིན།
Definition of an interpretative meaning sutra: That observed as either:

1. A sutra that indicates its explicit teaching of conventional truth in terms of its main indicated-object; or
2. A sutra not suitable to be asserted literally.

དཔེར་ན། འཁོར་ལོ་ཐོག་མཐའ་གཉིས་ལྟ་བུ།
For example, the Initial and Final Wheels.

Prasangika ཐལ་འགྱུར་བ།

• Definitive: A sutra indicating its explicit indication of ultimate truth as its main indicated-object.
  ངེས་དོན་གྱི་མདོ། དོན་དམ་བདེན་པ་དངོས་བསྟན་བསྟན་བྱའི་གཙོ་བོར་བྱས་ནས་སྟོན་པའི་མདོ།
• Interpretative: A sutra indicating its explicit indication of conventional truth as its main indicated-object.
  དྲང་དོན་གྱི་མདོ། ཀུན་རྫོབ་བདེན་པ་དངོས་བསྟན་བསྟན་བྱའི་གཙོ་བོར་བྱས་ནས་སྟོན་པའི་མདོ།
