Sixteen moments of the path of seeing

ཉན་ཐོས་ཀྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་བར་ཆད་མེད་ལམ་གང་ཞིག རང་གི་ངོ་སྐལ་གྱི་སྤང་བྱར་གྱུར་པའི་འདོད་པའི་སས་བསྡུས་ཀྱི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མཐོང་སྤང་གི་
དངོས་གཉེན་བྱེད་པ་དེ། ཉན་ཐོས་ཀྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཆོས་བཟོད་ཀྱི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of a Hearer path of seeing dharma forbearance in relation to suffering:

1. Is an Uninterrupted path of the Hearer's path of seeing
2. Acts as the direct antidote for its respective objects of abandonment of the path of seeing in relation to suffering that are included in the Desire Realm.

ཉན་ཐོས་ཀྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་བར་ཆད་མེད་ལམ་གང་ཞིག དེར་གྱུར་པའི་གོང་མའི་སས་བསྡུས་ཀྱི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མཐོང་སྤང་ཉོན་སྒྲིབ་ཀྱི་དངོས་གཉེན་བྱེད་པ་དེ།
ཉན་ཐོས་ཀྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་སྡུག་བསྔལ་རྗེས་བཟོད་ཀྱི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of a Hearer's path of seeing subsequent forbearance in relation to suffering:

1. Is an Uninterrupted path of the Hearer's path of seeing
2. Acts as the direct antidote for its respective objects of abandonment of the path of seeing in relation to suffering that are included in the Upper Realms.

ཉན་ཐོས་ཀྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་རྣམ་གྲོལ་ལམ་གང་ཞིག རང་འདྲེན་བྱེད་ཀྱི་བར་ཆད་མེད་ལམ་གྱི་ངོ་སྐལ་གྱི་སྤང་བྱར་གྱུར་པའི་འདོད་པའི་སས་བསྡུས་ཀྱི་

Definition of a Hearer's path of seeing dharma knowledge in relation to suffering:

1. Is a Liberated path of the Hearer's path of seeing
2. Is directly liberated from the objects of abandonment of the path of seeing in relation to suffering that are included in the Desire Realm that correspond to the uninterrupted path that induced it.

ཉན་ཐོས་ཀྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་རྣམ་གྲོལ་ལམ་གང་ཞིག རང་འདྲེན་བྱེད་ཀྱི་བར་ཆད་མེད་ལམ་གྱི་ངོ་སྐལ་གྱི་སྤང་བྱར་གྱུར་པའི་གོང་མའི་སས་བསྡུས་ཀྱི་
སྡུག་བསྔལ་མཐོང་སྤང་དངོས་སུ་གྲོལ་བ། ཉན་ཐོས་ཀྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་སྡུག་བསྔལ་རྗེས་ཤེས་ཀྱི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of a Hearer's path of seeing subsequent knowledge in relation to suffering:

1. Is a Liberated path of the Hearer's path of seeing
2. Is directly liberated from the objects of abandonment of the path of seeing in relation to suffering that are included in the Upper Realms that correspond to the uninterrupted path that induced it.

མཛོད་ལས། ཆོས་བཟོད་བཞི་འདོད་པའི་སས་བསྡུས་ཀྱི་བདེན་པ་བཞིའི་མཐོང་སྤང་སྤོང་བའི་བར་ཆད་མེད་ལམ་དང༌།
ཆོས་ཤེས་བཞི་དེ་སྤངས་པའི་རྣམ་གྲོལ་ལམ་དང༌། རྗེས་བཟོད་བཞི་ཁམས་གོང་མའི་སས་བསྡུས་ཀྱི་བདེན་པ་བཞིའི་མཐོང་སྤང་སྤོང་བའི་བར་ཆད་མེད་ལམ་དང༌།
རྗེས་ཤེས་བཞི་དེ་སྤངས་པའི་རྣམ་གྲོལ་ལམ་དུ་བཤད་ལ།
Extrapolating for the four truths, according to Abhidharmakosha system:

• The four dharma forbearances: uninterrupted path abandoning the objects of abandonment of the path of seeing in relation to the four truths and included within the level of the Desire Realm
• The four dharma knowledges: liberated paths that have abandoned those
• The four subsequent forbearances: uninterrupted path abandoning the objects of abandonment of the path of seeing in relation to the four truths and included within the level of the Upper Realms
• The four subsequent forbearances: liberated paths that have abandoned those

ཀུན་བཏུས་ཀྱི་ལུགས་ལ། ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཆོས་བཟོད་ཀྱིས་ཁམས་གསུམ་གའི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མཐོང་སྤང་སྤོང་ཞིང༌།
སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཆོས་ཤེས་དེ་སྤངས་པའི་རྣམ་གྲོལ་ལམ་དང༌། སྡུག་བསྔལ་རྗེས་བཟོད་ཀྱིས་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཆོས་བཟོད་དང་ཆོས་ཤེས་གཉིས་ལ་དམིགས་ནས་འདི་ནི་འཕགས་པའི་ཆོས་རྣམས་ཀྱི་རྒྱུའོ་ཞེས་འཛིན་ལ། སྡུག་བསྔལ་རྗེས་ཤེས་ཀྱིས་རྗེས་བཟོད་ལ་དམིགས་ནས་སྔར་ལྟར་འཛིན་ཅིང༌།
དེས་ལྷག་མ་རྣམས་ལ་རིགས་འདྲ་བར་བཤད།
In the Abhidharmasamuccaya system (Mahayana):

• The dharma forbearance in relation to suffering of the Mahayana path of seeing abandons the objects of abandonment of the path of seeing in relation to suffering and all three realms
• The dharma knowledge in relation to suffering is the liberated path that is liberated from those
• The subsequent forbearance in relation to suffering observes those two (dharma forbearance and knowledge in relation to suffering) and apprehends "These are the cause of Arya qualities!"
• The subsequent knowledge in relation to suffering observes that subsequent forbearance and apprehends the same.

ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཆོས་བཟོད་ནི་སྡུག་བདེན་གྱི་ཆོས་ཉིད་ལ་རྩེ་གཅིག་ཏུ་མཉམ་པར་བཞག་པའི་སྒོ་ནས་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མཐོང་སྤང་གི་
དངོས་གཉེན་བྱེད་པའི་བར་ཆད་མེད་ལམ་ཡིན། དེའི་ཆོས་ཤེས་ནི་དེ་སྤངས་པའི་རྣམ་གྲོལ་ལམ་དང༌། དེའི་རྗེས་བཟོད་ནི་སྔ་མ་གཉིས་རྒྱུ་འབྲས་སུ་རྟོགས་པའི་ནུས་པ་ཐོབ་པའི་བར་ཆད་མེད་ལམ་དང༌། དེའི་རྗེས་ཤེས་ནི་རྗེས་བཟོད་དེ་ཡུལ་དུ་བྱེད་པའི་ནུས་པ་ཐོབ་པའི་རྣམ་གྲོལ་ལམ་ཡིན།
དེས་ཤེས་བཟོད་ལྷག་མ་བཅུ་གཉིས་ལ་ཡང་རིགས་འགྲེ་སྟེ་ཤེས་པར་བྱ།
Jetsunpa:

• The Mahayana path of seeing dharma forbearance in relation to suffering is an uninterrupted path that acts as the direct antidote for the objects of abandonment of the path of seeing in relation to suffering by way of being in single-pointed meditative equipoise on the dharmata of true suffering.
• Its dharma knowledge is a liberated path that has abandoned those.
• Its subsequent forbearance is an uninterrupted path that has attained the ability to realise the previous two as cause and effect.
• Its subsequent knowledge is a liberated path that has attained the ability to take that subsequent forbearance as its object.
• Apply this to the remaining twelve forbearances and knowledges.

ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་ཆོས་བཟོད་བཞི་དང་ཆོས་ཤེས་བཞི་དེ་བཞིན་ཉིད་རྟོགས་པའི་ཆ་ནས་བསྟན་ནས། དེའི་རྗེས་བཟོད་བཞི་དང་རྗེས་ཤེས་བཞི་ཡུལ་ཅན་ཡེ་ཤེས་རྟོགས་པའི་ལྡོག་ཆ་ནས་བསྟན་པ་ཡིན།
Therefore:

• The four dharma forbearances and four dharma knowledges of the Mahayana path of seeing are indicated from the perspective of realising suchness
• Its four subsequent forbearances and four subsequent knowledges are indicated from the perspective of realising the exalted wisdoms (object-possessors)

ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་ཤེས་བཟོད་སྐད་ཅིག་མ་བཅུ་དྲུག་པོ་ཐམས་ཅད་སྟོང་ཉིད་ལ་གཉིས་སྣང་ནུབ་པའི་སྒོ་ནས་མཚན་འཛིན་གྱི་སྤྲོས་པ་མེད་པའི་
མཉམ་གཞག་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཡིན། དེས་ན་ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་བར་ཆད་མེད་ལམ་དེས་བདེན་བཞིའི་ཆོས་ཉིད་ལ་གཉིས་སྣང་ནུབ་པའི་སྒོ་ནས་ཆོས་བཟོད་བཞི་དང༌། ཆོས་བཟོད་བཞི་ཤུགས་ལ་རྟོགས་པའི་སྒོ་ནས་རྗེས་བཟོད་བཞིར་བཞག་ཅིང༌། ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་རྣམ་གྲོལ་ལམ་དེས་བདེན་བཞིའི་ཆོས་ཉིད་རྟོགས་པའི་ཆ་ནས་ཆོས་ཤེས་བཞི། ཆོས་ཤེས་བཞི་ཤུགས་ལ་རྟོགས་པའི་ཆ་ནས་རྗེས་ཤེས་བཞིར་བཞག་པས། དེ་བཅུ་དྲུག་པོ་དེ་སྟོང་ཉིད་ལ་རྩེ་གཅིག་ཏུ་མཉམ་པར་བཞག་པའི་མཉམ་གཞག་ཐུན་གཅིག་ཡིན།
All sixteen moments of forbearance and knowledge of the Mahayana path of seeing are an exalted wisdom of meditative equipoise [realising] emptiness by way of the disappearance of dualistic appearances and without the elaborations of apprehending signs.
Therefore,

• The uninterrupted path of the Mahayana path of seeing is presented as:
  • Dharma forbearance by way of [realising] the dharmata of the four truths by way of the disappearance of dualistic appearances; and
  • Subsequent forbearance by way of implicitly realising the four dharma forbearances.
• The liberated path of the Mahayana path of seeing is presented as:
  • Dharma knowledge by way of realising the dharmata of the four truths; and
  • Subsequent knowledge by way of implicitly realising the four dharma knowledges.

Therefore, those sixteen are a single meditation session that is in single-pointed meditative equipoise on emptiness.

ལུང་འདི་དག་གིས་ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་བར་ཆད་མེད་ལམ་གྱིས་ཁོ་རང་མ་རྟོགས་ཟེར་བ་ལེགས་པར་བཀག་གོ
These passages (quotes Haribhadra and Gyaltsab Je) thoroughly refute statements to the effect that the uninterrupted path of the Mahayana path of seeing does not realise itself.
i.e. Jetsunpa asserts that it does realise itself (implicitly).
Realising emptiness and implicitly realising the awareness realising emptiness does not make emptiness implicative negation because the awareness realising emptiness is an implicative negation. See also Negations.

ཉན་ཐོས་ཀྱི་མཐོང་ལམ་བཟོད་པ་བརྒྱད་ཅིག་ཅར་དུ་སྐྱེ་བ་ཡོད་དེ། སྤང་བྱ་ཅིག་ཅར་བའི་རྒྱུན་ཞུགས་ཞུགས་པའི་རྒྱུད་ལ་དེ་ལྟར་སྐྱེ་བའི་ཕྱིར།
རིམ་ཅན་དུ་སྐྱེ་བ་ཡོད་དེ། སྤང་བྱ་རིམ་གྱིས་པའི་རྒྱུད་ལ་དེ་ལྟར་སྐྱེ་བའི་ཕྱིར། དེས་རང་སངས་རྒྱས་ལ་རིགས་འགྲེའོ།
Mode of arising:

• The eight forbearances of the Hearer's path of seeing can arise simultaneously because they arise as such in the continuum of a Simultaneous Abandoner Approacher to Stream-Enterer.
• They can arise serially because they arise as such in the continuum of Serial Abandoners.
• Apply this also to Solitary Realisers.
• Mahayanists are pervaded by being Simultaneous Abandoners.

Simultaneous arising: One uninterrupted path and one liberated path. One entity different isolates.
Serial arising: Sixteen moments.
