37 Harmonies with enlightenment
Divisions:

Paths arisen through striving རྩོལ་བ་ལས་བྱུང་བའི་ལམ། - Four legs of magical emanation རྫུ་འཕྲུལ་གྱི་རྐང་པ་བཞི།
Paths of thoroughly training concentration ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་ཡོངས་སུ་སྦྱོང་བའི་ལམ། - Five powers དབང་པོ་ལྔ།
Paths preparing for clear realisation མངོན་པར་རྟོགས་པར་སྦྱོར་བའི་ལམ། - Five strengths སྟོབས་ལྔ།
Paths connecting to clear realisation མངོན་པར་རྟོགས་པ་དང་འབྲེལ་བའི་ལམ། - Seven branches of enlightenment བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་ཡན་ལག་བདུན།
Paths of clear realisation མངོན་པར་རྟོགས་པའི་ལམ། - Eight branches of arya paths འཕགས་ལམ་ཡན་ལག་བརྒྱད།
Paths of deliverance རྣམ་པར་ངེས་པར་འབྱིན་པའི་ལམ།
When the 37 are subsumed into their substance type, there are ten:
- Faith དད་པ།
- Joyous effort བརྩོན་འགྲུས།
- Faith དྲན་པ།
- Wisdom ཤེས་རབ།
- Concentration ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན།
- Equanimity བཏང་སྙོམས།
- Joy དགའ་བ།
- Right thought ཡང་དག་པའི་རྟོག་པ།
- Ethics ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས།
- Pliancy ཤིན་ཏུ་སྦྱངས་པ།
བྱང་ཆོས་དེ་ལ་སོ་བདུན་དུ་གྲངས་ངེས་ཏེ། ཚོགས་ལམ་ནས་སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱི་སའི་བར་གྱི་མངོན་རྟོགས་ཀྱི་རྫས་རིགས་ལ་དེར་གྲངས་ངེས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
The harmonies are definite in number as 37 because the substance types of the clear realisations from the path of accumulation and up to the Buddha-ground are definite as 37.
སོ་བདུན་པོ་འདི་ལ་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་ཕྱོགས་དང་མཐུན་པ་ཞེས་བརྗོད་པའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ཡོད་དེ། ཟད་མི་སྐྱེ་ཤེས་པའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་ནི་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཡིན་ལ།
དེ་སྐྱེ་བ་དང་རྗེས་སུ་མཐུན་པའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་གྱིས་དེ་ལྟར་བཤད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Etymology: Enlightenment is the wisdom knowing exhaustion and non-arising [of contamination]; these are concordant with the arising of that.
Grounds and paths: (mainly གཙོ་ཆེ་བའི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ན།)
- Path of accumulation
- Small: Four close placements of mindfulness
- Middling: Four correct abidings
- Great: Four legs of magical emanation
- Path of preparation
- Heat and peak: Five powers
- Forbearance and supreme dharma: Five strengths
- Path of seeing: Seven branches of enlightenment
- Path of meditation: Eight branches of arya paths
མཛོད་ལས་སྒོམ་ལམ་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་ཡན་ལག་ཏུ་འཇོག་པའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ཡོད་དེ།
སྒོམ་ལམ་དེ་མཐོང་ལམ་ལས་བྱང་ཆུབ་ལ་ཉེ་བའི་ཕྱིར། མཐོང་ལམ་ནི་སྒོམ་ལམ་ལས་ཆེས་མྱུར་བར་འགྲོ་བའི་ཕྱིར་འཕགས་ལམ་ཡན་ལག་ཏུ་བཞག་པའི་ཕྱིར།
The reason the Abhidharmakosha posits the branches of enlightenment on the path of meditation: Because the path of meditation is closer to enlightenment than the path of seeing.
Since the path of seeing is traversed much quicker than the path of meditation, it is posited as the branches of arya paths.
བྱང་ཆུབ་ཡན་ལག་དང་འཕགས་ལམ་ཡན་ལག་གཉིས་འདིར་མཐོང་ལམ་དང་སྒོམ་ལམ་ལ་དངོས་སུ་བཞག་ཀྱང༌།
མཐོང་ལམ་ནས་བྱང་ཕྱོགས་སོ་བདུན་རྫོགས་པར་འཐོབ།
Although the branches of enlightenment and branches of arya paths are explicitly posited wrt the paths of seeing and meditation, respectively; from the path of seeing the 37 harmonies are completely attained.
Realms and levels:
- First concentration: all 37 exist བསམ་གཏན་དང་པོར་བྱང་ཆོས་སོ་བདུན་པོ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཡོད་ཅིང་།
- Not-Unable preparation: 36 excluding joy ཉེར་བསྡོགས་མི་ལྕོགས་མེད་པ་ན་དགའ་བ་མ་གཏོགས་སོ་དྲུག་དང༌།
- Second concentration: 36 excluding right thought བསམ་གཏན་གཉིས་པར་ཡང་དག་པའི་རྟོག་པ་མ་གཏོགས་སོ་དྲུག་དང༌།
- Third concentration: 35 excluding joy and investigation
བསམ་གཏན་གསུམ་པ་དང་བཞི་པ་ན་དགའ་བ་དང་རྟོག་པ་མ་གཏོགས་སོ་ལྔ། - First three Formless Absorptions: 33 excluding right speech, limits of actions, joy and investigation
གཟུགས་མེད་དང་པོ་གསུམ་དུ་ཡང་དག་པའི་ངག །ལས་ཀྱི་མཐའ། དགའ་བ། རྟོག་པ་མ་གཏོགས་སོ་གསུམ་དང༌། - Desire Realm and Peak of Existence: 22 excluding the seven branches of enlightenment and eight branches of arya paths
འདོད་ཁམས་དང་ནི་སྲིད་རྩེ་ན། བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་ཡན་ལག་བདུན་དང༌། འཕགས་ལམ་ཡན་ལག་བརྒྱད་མ་གཏོགས་ཉེར་གཉིས་སུ་ཡོད།
This is according to the Abhidharmakosha. Our system is mostly the same, but the branches of enlightenment are not excluded from the Desire Realm and Peak of Existence.
