Cause of Arya Bodhisattvas taking rebirth in Samsara
Related to what afflictions Arya Bodhisattvas do not strive to abandon, because some say they do not abandon those in order to take rebirth in samsara for the welfare of others. Also, debated whether these afflictions are fully-qualified or not.
Two ways of taking rebirth in samsara:
- Through the force of karma and afflictions ལས་ཉོན་གྱི་དབང་གིས་འཁོར་བར་སྐྱེ་བ།
- Through the force of compassion and prayers སྙིང་རྗེ་དང་སྨོན་ལམ་གྱི་དབང་གིས་འཁོར་བར་སྐྱེ་བ།
Eight Causes according to the Teachings of Sāgaramati Sutra:
བློ་གྲོས་རྒྱ་མཚོས་ཞུས་པའི་མདོ་ལས། དེ་དག་གི་འཁོར་བའི་རྒྱུ་དགེ་བའི་རྩ་བ་དང་མཚུངས་པར་ལྡན་པའི་ཉོན་མོངས་པ་དེ་གང་ཞེ་ན། འདི་ལྟ་སྟེ།
What are the afflictions concomitant with root virtues that are the causes of their Samsara?
They are as such:
- Non-satisfaction in thoroughly seeking the collection of merit;
བསོད་ནམས་ཀྱི་ཚོགས་ཡོངས་སུ་འཚོལ་བས་མི་ངོམས་པ་དང༌། - Thoroughly and intentionally taking birth in existence; བསམ་བཞིན་དུ་སྲིད་པར་སྐྱེ་བ་ཡོངས་སུ་འཛིན་པ་དང༌།
- Striving to meet with the Buddhas; སངས་རྒྱས་དང་ཕྲད་པ་དོན་དུ་གཉེར་བ་དང༌།
- Without discouragement in thoroughly ripening sentient beings; སེམས་ཅན་ཡོངས་སུ་སྨིན་པར་བྱ་བའི་ཕྱིར་མི་སྐྱོ་བ་དང༌།
- Striving to uphold the holy dharma; དམ་པའི་ཆོས་འཛིན་པ་ལ་བརྩོན་པ་དང༌།
- Accomplishing all sentient beings’ activities; སེམས་ཅན་གྱི་བྱ་བ་ཅི་ཡོད་པ་ལ་འགྲུབ་པ་དང༌།
- Not separated from the thought desiring the dharma; ཆོས་ལ་ཆགས་པའི་བསམ་པ་དང་མ་བྲལ་བ་དང༌།
- Not discarding application in all perfections. ཕ་རོལ་ཏུ་ཕྱིན་པའི་ཀུན་ཏུ་སྦྱོར་བ་རྣམས་མི་འདོར་བ།
These are not actual affliction:
- Reason: because they are of similar function to the afflictions; because afflictions function to connect the person in whose continuum they are in with the Three Realms and these also function to connect in this way. དེ་ཉོན་མོངས་པ་དང་བྱེད་ལས་མཚུངས་པའི་ཕྱིར་ཏེ། ཉོན་མོངས་པས་རང་རྒྱུད་ལྡན་གྱི་གང་ཟག་ཁམས་གསུམ་དུ་སྦྱོར་བར་བྱེད་ལ།
འདིས་ཀྱང་དེ་ལྟར་སྦྱོར་བར་བྱེད་པའི་ཕྱིར། - Purpose: Arya Bodhisattvas make great effort for other’s welfare; because it is in order to make known that in order to take rebirth in existence for others’ welfare, they do not abandon the afflictions for their own welfare. བྱང་སེམས་འཕགས་པ་ནི་གཞན་དོན་ལྷུར་ལེན་པ་ཡིན་ནོ་ཞེས་ཤེས་པར་བྱ་བའི་ཆེད་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར་ཏེ།
དེས་གཞན་དོན་དུ་སྲིད་པར་ཉིང་མཚམས་སྦྱོར་བའི་ཕྱིར་རང་དོན་དུ་ཉོན་མོངས་པ་ཡང་མི་སྤོང་བར་ཤེས་པར་བྱ་བའི་ཆེད་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར། - Harm to actual meaning: because those are not able to afflict the mind.
དེས་སེམས་ཉེ་བར་ཉོན་མོངས་པར་བྱེད་མི་ནུས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Presentation in the Śrīmālādevi Sutra:
ཉོན་མོངས་པའི་བག་ཆགས་སམ། མ་རིག་བག་ཆགས་ཀྱི་ས་དང༌། ཟག་མེད་ཀྱི་ལས་རང་རྒྱུ་ཤེས་སྒྲིབ་ཙམ་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་བྱུང་བའི་ཀུན་སློང་གི་རྩོལ་བ་ཕྲ་མོར་
གྱུར་པའི་སེམས་བྱུང་སེམས་པ་གཉིས་ཉན་རང་དགྲ་བཅོམ་དག་ཞིང་དང༌། དག་ས་ལ་གནས་པའི་བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའ་གཞན་དོན་དུ་འཁོར་བར་སྐྱེ་བ་ལེན་པའི་རྒྱུར་གསུངས་སོ།
This explains that the two:
- The imprints of the afflictions or the level of the imprints of ignorance; and
- Uncontaminated actions: intention mental factors that are subtle motivational striving arising in dependence upon just the knowledge obscurations that are their causes
Are the causes for Hearer and Solitary Realiser Arhats to take birth in a pure-field and for Bodhisattvas abiding on the pure grounds to take birth in Samsara for others’ welfare.
