Characteristics to be known

རང་གི་ཐོབ་བྱར་གྱུར་པའི་འབྲས་བུ་ཤེར་ཕྱིན་ཐོབ་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཐབས་སུ་གྱུར་པའི་ཞི་ལྷག་ཟུང་འབྲེལ་གྱི་སེམས་དཔའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར། ལམ་ཤེར་ཕྱིན་གྱི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་གྱི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of yoga of the path perfection of wisdom: A Bodhisattva's yoga that is a union of calm abiding and special insight and is the method for attaining the resultant perfection of wisdom that is its object of attainment.

རང་གི་ཐོབ་བྱར་གྱུར་པའི་འབྲས་བུ་ཤེར་ཕྱིན་ཐོབ་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཐབས་སུ་གྱུར་པའི་ཞི་ལྷག་ཟུང་འབྲེལ་གྱི་སེམས་དཔའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར། སྤྱིའི་མཚན་ཉིད།
General characteristics: A Bodhisattva yoga that is a union of calm abiding and special insight and is the method for attaining the resultant perfection of wisdom that is its result.

Individual characteristics: The sixteen applications (Entity-characteristics) that are one entity with the yoga of the path perfection of wisdom are characterised by way of (5):

• The applications of the three exalted knowers via Knower-characteristics:
  1. 16 KC of KB characterise 4 EC of KB
  2. 16 KC of KP characterise 5 EC of KP
  3. 16 KC of KoA characterise 7 EC of KoA
• Being superior to Hinayana applications via Distinguishing-characteristics
• Enacting the welfare of sentient beings via Function-characteristics

ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་ཚོགས་ལམ་ནས་རྒྱུན་མཐའི་བར་དུ་ཡོད།
Boundaries: exist from the Mahayana path of accumulation and up to the end of the continuum.

ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་རིགས་ཅན་གཅིག་ངེས་པར་བླ་མེད་རྫོགས་བྱང་དོན་དུ་གཉེར་བ་ན་དེའི་རྒྱུར་ཡུམ་གྱི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་ལ་འཇུག་ལ། དེའི་ཚེ་
When a Mahayana lineage-bearer definitively strives for unsurpassed complete enlightenment, they engage in the yoga of the Mother as its cause. At that time:

1. Since they must analyse whether or not they have the ability to generate the final realisation, the knower-characteristics are indicated དེ་ལ་རྟོགས་པ་མཐར་ཐུག་སྐྱེད་པའི་ནུས་པ་ཡོད་མེད་དཔྱོད་དགོས་པས་དེ་ལ་ཤེས་མཚན་དང༌།
2. Since mere realisation is not the main object of striving of the Mahayana if it does not appear to be able to generate the final welfare of others, the function-characteristics are indicated in order to know that
   དེ་ལ་ཡང་གཞན་དོན་མཐར་ཐུག་སྐྱེད་པའི་ནུས་པ་མི་སྣང་ན་རྟོགས་པ་ཙམ་ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་དོན་དུ་གཉེར་བྱའི་གཙོ་བོ་མ་ཡིན་པས་དེ་ཤེས་པ་ལ་བྱེད་མཚན་དང༌།
3. Since they will turn away from entering the Mahayana path, which involves many necessary hardships, if those two abilities also exist for the paths of Hearers and Solitary Realisers, the distinguishing-characteristics are indicated in order to know that they do not
   ནུས་པ་དེ་གཉིས་ཉན་རང་གི་ལམ་ལ་ཡང་ཡོད་ན་དཀའ་བ་དུ་མར་སྤྱད་དགོས་པའི་ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་ལམ་ལ་འཇུག་པ་ལྡོག་པས།
   དེ་མེད་པར་ཤེས་པ་ལ་ཁྱད་མཚན་དང༌།
4. In order to know the entity of the applications, i.e. what type of realisations and abandonments do they possess, it is necessary to indicate the final characteristics (entity-characteristics ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་མཚན།)
   སྦྱོར་བ་དེ་རང་གི་ངོ་བོ་སྤངས་རྟོགས་ཇི་ལྟ་བུ་དང་ལྡན་པ་ཤེས་པར་བྱེད་པ་ལ་མཚན་ཉིད་ཐ་མ་བསྟན་དགོས་པའི་

མཚན་ཉིད་ཤེས་པ་སྦྱོར་བ་སྒོམ་པའི་སྔོན་དུ་འགྲོ་བའི་ཚུལ་དེ་ཡིན་ནོ། །འདིས་མཚན་ཉིད་གཏན་ལ་ཕབ་པའི་དགོས་པ་དང་གྲངས་ངེས་ཡང་བསྟན་ཏོ།
This is the way of knowing the characteristics as a preliminary to cultivating the applications.
This also indicates the purpose for delineating the characteristics and their definite number.
