Debate between Haribhadra and Vimuktasena
འཕགས་པ་གྲོལ་སྡེ་དང་དེའི་རྗེས་འབྲང་རྣམས་ཀྱི་ལུགས་ལ། ཐུབ་པའི་ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུ་ནི། །ཞེས་སོགས་ཀྱིས། ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུ་མདོར་བསྟན།
བྱང་ཆུབ་ཕྱོགས་མཐུན་ཞེས་སོགས་ཀྱིས་དེ་རྒྱས་པར་བཤད་པ་ཡིན་ཏེ།
According to the system of Arya Vimuktasena and his followers:
- "The Muni's Nature Body" and so forth (v8.1) is the brief indication of the Nature Body;
- "The harmonies with enlightenment," and so forth (v8.2-6) are its extensive explanation.
ཐུབ་པའི་ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུ་ནི། །ཞེས་སོགས་ཀྱིས། ཟག་མེད་ཀྱི་ཡེ་ཤེས་སྡེ་ཚན་ཉེར་གཅིག་པོའི་སྟེང་གི་དག་པ་གཉིས་ལྡན་གྱི་ཆོས་དབྱིངས་མཐར་ཐུག་དེ།
ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུར་བསྟན་ནས།
Verse 8.1 indicates the final dharmadhatu possessing the two purities on the basis of the twenty-one sets of uncontaminated exalted wisdom to be the Nature Body.
འོ་ན། ཟག་མེད་ཀྱི་ཡེ་ཤེས་སྡེ་ཚན་ཉེར་གཅིག་པོ་དེ་གང་། དེའི་ཆོས་ཉིད་ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུ་ཡིན་ཚུལ་དེ་ཇི་ལྟ་བུ་ཡིན་ཞེ་ན།
Then, one may ask: what are those twenty-one sets of uncontaminated exalted wisdom? In what way is the Nature Body their dharmata?
བྱང་ཆུབ་ཕྱོགས་མཐུན་ཚད་མེད་དང་། །ཞེས་པ་ནས། རྣམ་པ་ཐམས་ཅད་མཁྱེན་ཉིད་དང་། །ཞེས་པའི་བར་གྱིས།
ཟག་མེད་ཀྱི་ཡེ་ཤེས་སྡེ་ཚན་ཉེར་གཅིག་པོ་ངོས་བཟུང་ནས།
So verses 8.2 until 8.6c identify the twenty-one sets of uncontaminated exalted wisdom.
ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྐུ་ཞེས་བརྗོད་པ་ཡིན། །ཞེས་པས། ཟག་མེད་ཡེ་ཤེས་སྡེ་ཚན་ཉེར་གཅིག་གི་སྟེང་གི་དག་པ་གཉིས་ལྡན་གྱི་ཆོས་ཉིད་དེ། ཆོས་ཉིད་ཀྱི་སྐུའམ། ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུར་བསྟན།
And "Are called the Dharmakaya." (8.6d) indicates the dharmata possessing the two purities on the basis of those twenty-one sets of uncontaminated exalted wisdom to be the Dharmatakaya or Nirmanakaya.
འོ་ན། སྐབས་འདིར། ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྐུ་ཞེས་བརྗོད་པ་ཡིན། །ཞེས་མི་འབྱུང་བར། ཆོས་ཉིད་སྐུ་ཞེས་བརྗོད་པ་ཡིན། །ཞེས་འབྱུང་རིགས་པར་ཐལ།
བྱང་ཆུབ་ཕྱོགས་མཐུན་ཚད་མེད་དང་། །ཞེས་སོགས་ཀྱིས་ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུ་རྒྱས་པར་བཤད་པ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར། ཞེ་ན།
Well then, one may say: it follows that it would be suitable to see "Are called the Dharmatakaya." instead of "Are called the Dharmakaya" in this context because verses 8.2-6 are the extensive explanation of the Nature Body.
སྐྱོན་མེད་དེ་སྐབས་འདིར། ཆོས་ཉིད་ཀྱི་སྐུ་ལ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྐུ་ཞེས་ཚིག་བསྡུ་བ་བྱས་ནས་བསྟན་པ་ཡིན་ཏེ།
ཆོས་ཉིད་ཀྱི་སྐུའི་སྐད་དོད། དྷརྨ་ཏ་ཀཱ་ཡ་ཞེས་པའི་ངོ་བོའི་རྐྱེན་མི་མངོན་པར་བྱས་ནས། དྷརྨ་ཀཱ་ཡ་ཞེས་བརྗོད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
There is no fault because it is indicated through abbreviating "Dharmatakaya" into "Dharmakaya" in this context because by omitting the entity-particle (ta) from the Sanskrit term "Dharmatakaya", you get "Dharmakaya".
ངོ་བོའི་རྐྱེན་མི་མངོན་ཞེས་པ་ཡང་། ཏ་དེ་རྣམ་དབྱེ་དང་པོ་ངོ་བོ་ཙམ་སྟོན་པའི་རྐྱེན་ཡིན་པས། ཏ་དེ་ལ་ངོ་བོའི་རྐྱེན་ཞེས་བྱའོ།
Regarding omitting the entity-particle: ta is a first case, i.e. a particle indicating mere entity, and therefore it is called the entity-particle.
སློབ་དཔོན་ནི། བྱང་ཆུབ་ཕྱོགས་མཐུན་ཚད་མེད་དང་། ཞེས་སོགས་ཀྱིས་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཆོས་སྐུ་བསྟན་བྱའི་གཙོ་བོར་བྱས་ནས་མ་བསྟན་ན།
དེ་སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱི་སྐུས་ཇི་ལྟར་བསྡུས་ཏེ། བསྡུས་པ་མི་འཐད་པར་བཞེད།
Haribhadra asserts:
If "The harmonies with enlightenment, the immeasurables," and so forth (v8.2-6) do not indicate the exalted wisdom dharmakaya as a main indicated-object, then how is it included in the Buddha-Bodies? It would be unsuitable to include it.
འཕགས་པ་ནི། བྱང་ཆུབ་ཕྱོགས་མཐུན་ཞེས་སོགས་ཀྱིས་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཆོས་སྐུ་བསྟན་བྱའི་གཙོ་བོར་བྱས་ནས་བསྟན་ན། ལུས་རྣམ་གཞག་ཏུ།
ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་ཅེས་པའི་སྒྲའི་མཇུག་ཐོགས་དེ་མ་ཐག་ཏུ། ཆོས་སྐུ་ཞེས་པའི་སྒྲ་འབྱུང་དགོས་པ་ལས་དེ་ལྟར་མི་འབྱུང་བས།
སྐབས་བརྒྱད་པའི་བསྟན་བྱའི་གཙོ་བོར་གྱུར་པའི་སྐུ་དེ་ལ་ཡང་ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུར་གྱུར་པའི་སྐུ། ལོངས་སྐུ་སྤྲུལ་སྐུ་གསུམ་ཁོ་ནར་བཞེད།
Arya Vimuktasena asserts:
If "The harmonies with enlightenment," and so forth (v8.2-6) do indicate the exalted wisdom dharmakaya as a main indicated-object, then in the overview of the text (v0.18) it would be necessary to see the word "Dharmakaya" immediately after the words "Nature Body", whereas it does not occur as such.
Therefore, the Bodies that are main indicated-objects of the eighth chapter are just the three: the Nature, Enjoyment and Emanation Bodies.
དེས་ན་འཕགས་པའི་ལུགས་ལ། བྱང་ཆུབ་ཕྱོགས་མཐུན་ཚད་མེད་དང་། །ཞེས་སོགས་ཀྱིས་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཆོས་སྐུ་བསྟན་ཀྱང་བསྟན་བྱའི་གཙོ་བོར་མི་བཞེད་དེ།
ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུའི་སྟོང་གཞི་ཆོས་ཅན་ཤེས་པའི་ཕྱིར་དུ། ཡེ་ཤེས་ཆོས་སྐུ་བསྟན་པ་ཙམ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Therefore, in Arya Vimuktasena's system, although "The harmonies with enlightenment, the immeasurables," and so forth (v8.2-6) does indicate the exalted wisdom dharmakaya, it is not asserted that it is a main indicated-object because it is merely indicating the exalted wisdom dharmakaya in order to make known the Nature Body's basis of emptiness (dharmin).
དེས་ན་འཕགས་སེང་གཉིས་ཀས་སྐུའི་གྲངས་ངེས་ཙམ་ལ་རྩོད་པ་མ་ཡིན་ཏེ།
དེ་གཉིས་ཀས་སྐུ་ཐམས་ཅད་གཉིས་སུ་འདུས་པར་ཡང་བཞེད། གསུམ་དུ་འདུས་པར་ཡང་བཞེད། བཞིར་འདུས་པར་ཡང་བཞེད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Therefore, it is not a debate between Haribhadra and Arya Vimuktasena regarding the definite number of Bodies because both assert that all Bodies can be subsumed into two, into three, and also into four.
སྐབས་བརྒྱད་པ་འདིར། ཡེ་ཤེས་ཆོས་སྐུ་དེ། ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུ་ལས་ལོགས་སུ་གྱུར་པའི་སྐུར་བསྟན་བྱའི་གཙོ་བོར་བྱས་ནས་བསྟན་མི་དགོས་ཏེ།
ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུ་བསྟན་ན་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཆོས་སྐུ་ཡང་བསྟན་པར་འགྱུར་བའི་ཕྱིར། ཡེ་ཤེས་ཆོས་སྐུ་དེ། ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུས་ཆོས་ཉིད་ཆོས་ཅན་གྱི་ཚུལ་གྱིས་བསྡུས་པའི་ཕྱིར། ཞེ་ན།

If you say that it is unnecessary to indicate the exalted wisdom dharmakaya as a main indicated-object separately from the Nature Body in the eighth chapter because if the Nature Body is indicated, the exalted wisdom dharmakaya will also be indicated; because the exalted wisdom dharmakaya is included in the Nature Body by way of those being dharmata and dharmin...
འོ་ན་སྐབས་བརྒྱད་པ་འདིར་ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུ་ལས་ལོགས་སུ་གྱུར་པའི་ལོངས་སྐུ་སྤྲུལ་སྐུ་གཉིས་ཀྱང་བསྟན་བྱའི་གཙོ་བོར་བྱས་ནས་བསྟན་མི་དགོས་པར་ཐལ།

སྟོང་གཞི་ཆོས་ཅན་ལོངས་སྐུ་སྤྲུལ་སྐུ་གཉིས་བདེན་པས་སྟོང་པའི་ཆོས་ཉིད་དེ་ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུས་བསྡུས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Then it follows that it is also unnecessary to indicate the Enjoyment and Emanation Bodies as main indicated-objects separately from the Nature Body in the eighth chapter because by indicating the Nature Body, the Enjoyment and Emanation Bodies are also indicated; because those are included in the Nature Body by way of being dharmata and dharmin; because the emptiness of true existence (dharmata) of the Enjoyment and Emanation Bodies (the bases of emptiness, dharmin) is included in the Nature Body.
