Eight branches of arya paths

རང་འབྲས་འཕགས་ལམ་གྱི་རྒྱུར་གྱུར་པའི་འཕགས་རྒྱུད་ཀྱི་མཁྱེན་པ། འཕགས་ལམ་ཡན་ལག་གི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition: An exalted knower in an Arya's continuum that is the cause of its resultant arya paths.

Divisions:

Right view ཡང་དག་པའི་ལྟ་བ་འཕགས་པའི་ལམ་ཡན་ལག
Right investigation ཡང་དག་པའི་རྟོག་པ་འཕགས་པའི་ལམ་ཡན་ལག
Right speech ཡང་དག་པའི་ངག་འཕགས་པའི་ལམ་ཡན་ལག
Right limits of actions ཡང་དག་པའི་ལས་ཀྱི་མཐའ་འཕགས་པའི་ལམ་ཡན་ལག
Right livelihood ཡང་དག་པའི་འཚོ་བ་འཕགས་པའི་ལམ་ཡན་ལག (see: Five wrong livelihoods)
Right striving ཡང་དག་པའི་རྩོལ་བ་འཕགས་པའི་ལམ་ཡན་ལག
Right mindfulness ཡང་དག་པའི་དྲན་པ་འཕགས་པའི་ལམ་ཡན་ལག
Right concentration ཡང་དག་པའི་ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་འཕགས་པའི་ལམ་ཡན་ལག

Branch of thorough analysis ཡོངས་སུ་དཔྱོད་པའི་ཡན་ལག - 1
Branch of making others understand གཞན་ལ་གོ་བར་བྱེད་པའི་ཡན་ལག - 2
Branches of making others believe གཞན་ཡིད་ཆེས་པར་བྱེད་པའི་ཡན་ལག - 3, 4, 5
Branches of antidotes to the discordant class མི་མཐུན་ཕྱོགས་ཀྱི་གཉེན་པོའི་ཡན་ལག
- Right striving - branch of completely purifying afflictive obscurations
  ཉོན་མོངས་པའི་སྒྲིབ་པ་རྣམ་པར་དག་པའི་ཡན་ལག
- Right mindfulness - branch of purifying afflictions ཉོན་མོངས་པ་སྦྱོང་བའི་ཡན་ལག
- Right concentration - branch of completely purifying obscurations to special qualities
  ཡོན་ཏན་ཁྱད་པར་ཅན་ལ་སྒྲིབ་པ་རྣམ་པར་སྦྱོང་པའི་ཡན་ལག

Reasons:

Right view is the branch of thorough analysis because it is the thorough analysis of the realisation of meditative equipoise. ཡང་དག་པའི་ལྟ་བ་ནི། ཡོངས་སུ་དཔྱོད་པའི་ཡན་ལག་ཡིན་ཏེ། དེ་མཉམ་གཞག་གི་རྟོགས་པ་ཡོངས་སུ་དཔྱོད་པ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Right investigation is the view of engendering others' understanding because motivated by that, one makes others understand through speech རྟོག་པ་གོ་བར་བྱེད་པའི་ཡན་ལག་ཡིན་ཏེ། དེས་ཀུན་ནས་བསླངས་ནས་ངག་གི་གོ་བར་བྱེད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Branches of engendering others' belief: དེའི་འོག་མ་གསུམ་གཞན་ཡིད་ཆེས་པའི་ཡན་ལག་ཡིན་ཏེ།
1. Explanations connected with speech are taken as pure view
  ངག་གི་ཐ་སྙད་དང་འབྲེལ་བའི་གཏམ་གྱིས་ལྟ་བ་རྣམ་དག་ཏུ་བྱེད།
2. Not engaging in inappropriate actions (limits of actions) is taken as pure ethics
  ལས་ཀྱི་མཐའ་བྱ་བ་མ་ཡིན་པ་མི་བྱེད་པས་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་རྣམ་དག་ཏུ་བྱེད།
3. In terms of livelihood, using whatever robes and so forth one is given, creates belief in minimal material things འཚོ་བས་ཆོས་གོས་སོགས་ཇི་ལྟར་གནང་བ་བཞིན་ལོངས་སྤྱོད་པས་ཡོ་བྱད་བསྙུངས་པ་ལ་ཡིད་ཆེས་པར་བྱེད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Branches of antidotes: ཕྱི་མ་གསུམ་གཉེན་པོའི་ཡན་ལག་ཏུ་འདུ་སྟེ།
Act as antidotes to their discordant classes: རང་གི་མི་མཐུན་ཕྱོགས་ཀྱི་གཉེན་པོ་བྱེད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
1. Striving for afflictions that are objects of abandonment of the path of meditation
  རྩོལ་བས་སྒོམ་སྤང་གི་ཉོན་མོངས་པ་དང༌།
2. Mindfulness for the secondary afflictions of laxity and excitement དྲན་པས་ཉེ་ཉོན་བྱིང་རྒོད་དང༌།
3. Concentration through accomplishing special qualities, such as clairvoyance and so forth
  ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་གྱིས་མངོན་ཤེས་སོགས་ཡོན་ཏན་ཁྱད་པར་ཅན་སྒྲུབ་པས་

Subsumed into Three Higher Trainings:

Ethics: 3, 4, 5
Concentration: 8 (in ch1: 7 is here)
Wisdom: 1, 2, 6, 7

ས་མཚམས་ནི། གཙོ་ཆེ་བར་སྒོམ་ལམ་ནས་ཡོད།
Boundaries: most exist from the path of meditation.

རང་གི་འབྲས་བུར་གྱུར་པའི་འཕགས་ལམ་གྱི་ཡན་ལག་སྟེ་རྒྱུ་བྱེད་པས་ན་འཕགས་ལམ་ཡན་ལག་ཅེས་བྱའོ།
Etymology: Due to acting as a branch, i.e. cause, for its resultant arya path.

Objects of observation: the four truths.

Mode of cultivation: same as for Seven branches of enlightenment.

བདེན་པ་སྔར་མ་མཐོང་བ་མངོན་སུམ་དུ་གསར་དུ་མཐོང་བའི་ལམ་ཐོབ་པ་ལས་སྒོམ་ལམ་གྱི་ངོ་བོ་རྣམ་པར་དག་པར་ངེས་འབྱིན་གྱི་ལམ་འབྱུང་བས་དེ་ལྟར་བཤད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Connection to Seven branches of enlightenment: Through the attainment of the path of directly and newly seeing the previously unseen truth, arises the path delivering to complete purity (whose nature is the path of seeing).

Purposes:

To abandon the objects of abandonment of the path of meditation སྒོམ་སྤང་སྤོང་བ་དང༌།
To thoroughly analyse the meaning seen in meditative equipoise during subsequent attainment
མཉམ་གཞག་ཏུ་མཐོང་བའི་དོན་རྗེས་ཐོབ་ཏུ་ཡོངས་སུ་དཔྱོད་པར་བྱེད་པ་དང༌།
To make [others] understand the holy dharma དམ་ཆོས་གོ་བར་བྱེད་པ་དང༌།
To make others believe གཞན་ཡིད་ཆེས་པར་བྱེད་པ་དང༌།
To completely purify the obscurations of the root afflictions and the obscurations to mastering qualities
རྩ་བའི་ཉོན་མོངས་པའི་སྒྲིབ་པ་དང༌། ཡོན་ཏན་ལ་དབང་འབྱོར་བའི་སྒྲིབ་པ་རྣམ་པར་དག་པར་བྱེད་པ།
