Faults of the applications
སྦྱོར་བ་སྐྱེ་བ་དང་གནས་པ་དང་རྫོགས་པ་གང་རུང་ལ་བར་དུ་གཅོད་བྱེད་ཀྱི་བདུད་ལས། སྦྱོར་བའི་སྐྱོན་གྱི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition: An action of maras that functions to hinder the arising, abiding, or completion of an application.

- Proximity to applications' discordant conditions (23) སྦྱོར་བའི་འགལ་རྐྱེན་ཉེ་བར་གནས་པ་ཉེར་གསུམ།
- Relating to oneself (20) རང་ལ་བརྟེན་པ་ཉི་ཤུ།
- In terms of hindering thorough knowledge of the meaning: (2)
དོན་ཡོངས་སུ་ཤེས་པ་ལ་བར་དུ་གཅོད་པའི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ནས།- Belated confidence in attaining knowledge of the Mother with great hardships over a long time when cultivating the applications
སྦྱོར་བ་སྒོམ་པའི་དུས་སུ་ཚེགས་ཆེན་པོས་ཡུན་རིང་མོ་ནས་ཡུམ་ཤེས་པ་འཐོབ་པའི་སྤོབས་པ་འཕྱི་བ་དང༌། - Quick arising of confidence and being conceited wrt knowing the Mother without investigating the beginning and end
སྔོན་དང་ཕྱི་མཐའ་མ་བརྟགས་པར་ཡུམ་ཤེས་པའི་སྤོབས་པ་མྱུར་དུ་སྐྱེ་ཞིང་དེས་རློམ་པ་གཉིས་བཞག
- Belated confidence in attaining knowledge of the Mother with great hardships over a long time when cultivating the applications
- In terms of hindering activities of the three doors: (3)
སྒོ་གསུམ་གྱི་བྱ་བ་ལ་བར་དུ་གཅོད་པའི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ནས།- Questioning through negative bodily states such as yawning, laughing excitedly, and so forth ལུས་ཀྱི་གནས་ངན་ལེན་གླལ་བ་དང་ཧ་ཧ་ཞེས་རྒོད་པ་སོགས་ཀྱིས་འདྲི་བ་དང༌།
- Negative verbal states, due to the mind being distracted by friends and relatives or being inappropriate, yawning and so forth
ངག་གི་གནས་ངན་ལེན་གཉེན་བཤེས་སོགས་ལ་སེམས་རྣམ་པར་གཡེང་བ་སོགས་དང༌། རིགས་པ་མ་ཡིན་པས་གླལ་བ་སོགས་དང༌། - Explaining with a mind distracted by friends and relatives and so forth
གཉེན་བཤེས་ལ་སེམས་གཡེང་བ་སོགས་ཀྱིས་འཆད་པ་དང་གསུམ།
- In terms of hindering entrance to the Mahayana: (15)
ཐེག་ཆེན་ལ་འཇུག་པའི་བར་ཆད་ཀྱི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ན།- There are six (below) of discarding the Mother and entering a lower basket, together seven degenerations from the causes of the Mahayana
ཡུམ་འདི་བོར་ནས་དམན་པའི་སྡེ་སྣོད་ལ་འཇུག་པ་དྲུག་སྟེ་ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་རྒྱུ་ལས་ཉམས་པ་བདུན།- Turning away from the Mother, thinking "Not being prophesied is due to those not entering the faultlessness of Bodhisattvas not being prophesied, and I have not been prophesied! The town where I am born and so forth have not been described!"
བྱང་སེམས་ཀྱི་སྐྱོན་མེད་པར་མ་ཞུགས་པ་ལུང་མི་སྟོན་པས་ལུང་མ་བསྟན་པ་ན་བདག་ལུང་མ་བསྟན་ཏོ།
གང་དུ་སྐྱེ་བའི་གྲོང་ལ་སོགས་པ་མ་བརྗོད་དོ་སྙམ་དུ་ཡུམ་ལས་ཕྱིར་ཕྱོགས་པ་དང༌། - Discarding the root of a tree but seeking the branches ཤིང་གི་རྩ་བ་དོར་ནས་ཡལ་ག་དག་འཚོལ་བ།
- A dog discarding asking for food from its master and expecting that which will not come ཁྱི་ནི་ཇོ་བོ་ལ་ཟན་སློང་བ་དོར་ནས་མི་འོང་བ་ལ་རེ་བ།
- Having found an elephant, not seeking to know its characteristics but wishing to know the characteristics of its footprints
གླང་པོ་ཆེ་རྙེད་ནས་དེའི་མཚན་ཉིད་ཤེས་པར་མི་བྱེད་པར། དེའི་རྗེས་དེའི་མཚན་ཉིད་ཤེས་པར་འདོད་པ། - Some who wish for jewels see the ocean but equating the water in the ocean and in a hoofprint, they are satisfied with that and do not enter the ocean
ནོར་བུ་འདོད་པ་འགའ་ཞིག་རྒྱ་མཚོ་མཐོང་ནས། རྒྱ་མཚོ་དང་རྨིག་རྗེས་ཀྱི་ཆུ་སྙོམས་པ་ན་དེས་ཚིམ་ནས་རྒྱ་མཚོར་མི་འཇུག - Wishing to build a Victory Mansion with measurement of the celestial houses
ཉི་ཟླའི་ཁང་པའི་ཚད་ཀྱིས་རྣམ་པར་རྒྱལ་བའི་ཁང་བཟང་བྱེད་འདོད་པ། - Seeing a local ruler and thinking they are like a Wheel-Turning King; finding food for sixty days and discarding food with a hundred flavours; finding a priceless jewel and equating it with a trinket
ཁམས་ཀྱི་རྒྱལ་ཕྲན་མཐོང་ནས་འཁོར་ལོ་སྒྱུར་རྒྱལ་འདི་ལྟ་བུའོ་སྙམ་པ་དང༌།
ཞག་དྲུག་ཅུ་པའི་ཟས་རྙེད་ནས་ཁ་ཟས་རོ་བརྒྱ་བ་བོར་བ་དང༌།
ནོར་བུ་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་རིན་ཐང་མེད་པ་རྙེད་ནས་ནོར་བུ་འཆིང་བུ་དང་སྙོམས་པ།
These [six] indicate discarding the Mother and entering a lower basket through examples དཔེས་ཡུམ་ཤེར་ཕྱིན་བོར་ནས་དམན་པའི་སྡེ་སྣོད་ལ་འཇུག་པར་བསྟན་ཏོ།
- Turning away from the Mother, thinking "Not being prophesied is due to those not entering the faultlessness of Bodhisattvas not being prophesied, and I have not been prophesied! The town where I am born and so forth have not been described!"
- Eight causes for being distracted from the Mahayana ཐེག་ཆེན་ལས་གཡེང་བའི་རྒྱུ་བརྒྱད།
- The arising of many over-confidences through adhering to many objects such as forms, sounds and so forth
གཟུགས་སྒྲ་ལ་སོགས་པའི་ཡུལ་མང་པོ་ལ་ཞེན་ནས་རྣམ་རྟོག་གི་སྤོབས་པ་དུ་མ་འབྱུང་བ། - Adhering to writing letters as the Mother ཡི་གེ་འབྲི་བ་ལ་ཡུམ་དུ་མངོན་པར་ཞེན་པ།
- Adhering to mere non-things as the Mother དངོས་པོ་མེད་པ་ཙམ་ལ་ཡུམ་དུ་མངོན་པར་ཞེན་པ།
- Adhering to merely the written letters as the Mother
ཡི་གེ་བྲིས་ཟིན་པ་ཙམ་ལ་ཡུམ་དུ་མངོན་པར་ཞེན་པ། - Adhering to only non-letters as the Mother ཡི་གེ་མེད་པ་ཁོ་ན་ལ་ཡུམ་དུ་མངོན་པར་ཞེན་པ།
- Taking to mind one's country and town ཡུལ་དང་གྲོང་ལ་སོགས་པ་ཡིད་ལ་བྱེད་པ།
- Relishing the taste of gain (attaining riches and so forth), honour (the tying of glorious silk ribbons and so forth), and sweet poetry རིན་པོ་ཆེ་ཐོབ་པ་སོགས་ཀྱི་རྙེད་པ།
དཔལ་གྱི་དར་དཔྱངས་བཅིངས་པ་སོགས་ཀྱི་བཀུར་སྟི། ཚིགས་སུ་བཅད་པའི་སྙན་པའི་རོ་མྱང་བ། - Seeking to master the methods of the basket indicated by maras, which are not the path for attaining Buddhahood
སངས་རྒྱས་ཐོབ་པའི་ལམ་མ་ཡིན་པ་བདུད་ཀྱིས་བསྟན་པའི་སྡེ་སྣོད་ལས་ཐབས་མཁས་པ་ཚོལ་བ།
- The arising of many over-confidences through adhering to many objects such as forms, sounds and so forth

- Relating to others (3) གཞན་ལ་བརྟེན་པ་གསུམ།
- Maras, coming in the guise of a Gelong, forcing a division between the dharma and person, saying "My sutra basket is the Mother; not these Extensive, Middling, and Brief!"
བདུད་དགེ་སློང་གི་ཆ་བྱད་དུ་འོངས་ནས་ངེད་ཀྱི་མདོ་སྡེ་འདི་ཉིད་ཡུམ་ཡིན་གྱི་རྒྱས་འབྲིང་བསྡུས་གསུམ་མིན་ནོ་ཞེས་ཆོས་དང་གང་ཟག་གི་བར་དུ་དབྱེན་བཅུག་ནས་འབྱེད་པ། - Teachers of sutra baskets that are false mothers ཡུམ་ལྟར་སྣང་བའི་མདོ་སྡེ་སྟོན་པ།
- Maras emanating as Buddhas, causing the generation of the wish for that
བདུད་ཉིད་སངས་རྒྱས་སུ་སྤྲུལ་ནས་དེ་ལ་འདོད་པ་སྐྱེད་དུ་བཅུག་པ།
- Maras, coming in the guise of a Gelong, forcing a division between the dharma and person, saying "My sutra basket is the Mother; not these Extensive, Middling, and Brief!"
- Relating to oneself (20) རང་ལ་བརྟེན་པ་ཉི་ཤུ།
- Incomplete concordant conditions (23) མཐུན་རྐྱེན་མ་ཚང་བ་ཉེར་གསུམ།
- Relating to both self and others (21) རང་གཞན་གཉིས་ཀ་ལ་བརྟེན་པ།
- Depending on the listener ཉན་པ་པོ་དང༌འབྲེལ་པ། (14)
Degeneration from group dharma activities due to: ཚོགས་པས་ཆོས་སྤྱོད་ལས་ཉམས་པ།- The listener having great aspiration to question and so forth whereas the explainer is greatly indifferent ཉན་པ་པོ་འདྲི་བ་སོགས་ལ་འདུན་པ་ཆེ་ལ། འཆད་པ་པོ་སྙོམས་ལས་ཆེ་བས།
- A different wished-for place: the listener wishing to listen in one place whereas the explainer wishes to explain in another
ཉན་པ་པོ་ཡུལ་འདིར་ཉན་འདོད་ལ་ཅིག་ཤོས་ཡུལ་གཞན་དུ་འཆད་འདོད་པས་འདུན་པའི་ཡུལ་ཐ་དད་པ། - One having small desires and knowing satisfaction wrt dharma robes and so forth whereas the other is the opposite
ཆོས་གོས་སོགས་ལ་འདོད་པ་ཆུང་ཞིང་ཆོག་ཤེས་པ་དང༌། དེ་ལས་བཟློག་པ། - Possessing and not possessing the qualties of training, going for alms and so forth
བསོད་སྙོམས་སོགས་སྦྱངས་པའི་ཡོན་ཏན་དང་ལྡན་མི་ལྡན་དག་གིས། - One possessing virtuous and aspiring qualities and the opposite, questioning the Mother and no desire to strive
དགེ་ཞིང་འདུན་པའི་ཆོས་ཅན་གྱིས་དང༌། དེ་ལས་བཟློག་སྟེ་ཡུམ་འདྲི་ཞིང་དོན་དུ་གཉེར་བར་མི་འདོད་པ། - Giving necessities to others and being miserly wrt those
ཡོ་བྱད་གཞན་ལ་གཏོང་པ་དང་དེ་ལ་སེར་སྣ་བྱེད་པ། - Wishing to give dharma robes and so forth to the explainer but they do not accept
ཆོས་གོས་སོགས་འཆད་པ་པོ་ལ་སྦྱིན་འདོད་པ་དང་དེས་མི་ལེན་པ། - One understanding everything through being told few words of dharma and not preoccupied with the words, whereas the other understands through elaborations and preoccupation with the words
ཆོས་ཀྱི་ཚིག་མགོ་སྨོས་པས་ཐམས་ཅད་གོ་ཞིང་ཚིག་ལྷུར་མི་ལེན་པ་དང༌། རྣམ་པར་སྤྲོས་པས་གོ་ཞིང་ཚིག་ལྷུར་ལེན་པ་ཉིད་ཀྱིས། - Knowing and not knowing the dharma wrt the Twelve Branches of Scripture
མདོ་ལ་སོགས་པའི་གསུང་རབ་ཡན་ལག་བཅུ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་ཆོས་མངོན་པར་ཤེས་པ་དང་དེ་མི་ཤེས་པ། - One possessing the six perfections of generosity and so forth and wishes to train in those, and the opposite སྦྱིན་སོགས་ཀྱི་ཕར་ཕྱིན་དྲུག་དང་ལྡན་ཞིང་དེ་ལ་སློབ་པར་འདོད་པ་དང་དེ་ལས་བཟློག་པས།
- One being skilled in the means of the perfections and striving in those, and the opposite
ཕར་ཕྱིན་ཐབས་ལ་མཁས་ཤིང་དེ་དོན་དུ་གཉེར་བ་དང་དེ་ལས་བཟློག་པས། - Having attained and not attained the retention of not forgetting the words and meaning
ཚིག་དོན་མི་བརྗེད་པའི་གཟུངས་ཐོབ་པ་དང་མ་ཐོབ་པ་དག་གིས། - Wishing and not wishing to write the letters of the Mother
ཡུམ་ཡི་གེར་འབྲི་བ་སོགས་ལ་འདོད་པ་དང་མི་འདོད་པ་དག་གིས། - Being separated and not separated from the five obscurations, aspiration for the desire realm and so forth འདོད་པའི་འདུན་པ་སོགས་སྒྲིབ་པ་ལྔ་དང་བྲལ་བ་དང་མ་བྲལ་བ་ཉིད་ཀྱིས།
- Depending on the explainer འཆད་པ་པོ་དང་འབྲེལ་པ། (7)
Degeneration from group dharma activities due to: ཚོགས་པས་ཆོས་སྤྱོད་ལས་ཉམས་པ།- Delight in self-isolation and busyness with the retinue
གཅིག་པུས་དབེན་པ་དང་འཁོར་གྱིས་འདུ་འཛི་ལ་སོགས་ལ་དགའ་བ་ཉིད་ཀྱིས། - Not creating an opportunity for the listener to follow the explainer as they wish while the listener wishes to follow ཉན་པ་པོ་འཆད་པ་པོའི་རྗེས་སུ་འབྲང་བར་འདོད་བཞིན་དུ་དེའི་གོ་སྐབས་མི་འབྱེད་པ་ཉིད་དང༌།
ཉན་པ་པོའི་ཕྱི་བཞིན་དུ་རྗེས་སུ་འབྲང་བ་སྟེ་འབྲང་བར་འདོད་པ་ཉིད་ཀྱིས། - Wishing to teach dharma for the sake of merely some material things and wishing to give that ཟང་ཟིང་ཅུང་ཟད་ཙམ་གྱི་ཕྱིར་ཆོས་སྟོན་འདོད་པ་དང་དེ་སྦྱིན་པར་འདོད་པ་ཉིད་ཀྱིས།
- Wishing to go to a place where there will be obstacles to life and not wishing to go there
གང་ན་སྲོག་གི་བར་ཆད་དུ་འགྱུར་བའི་ཕྱོགས་སུ་འགྲོ་བར་འདོད་པ་དང་དེར་འགྲོ་བར་མི་འདོད་པས། - Wishing to go to places of famine and so forth and not wishing to go
གང་ན་མུ་གེ་སོགས་ཡོད་པའི་ཕྱོགས་སུ་འགྲོ་བར་འདོད་པ་དང་མི་འདོད་པས། - Wishing to go to places where there are thieves and so forth and not wishing to go
གང་ན་ཆོམ་རྐུན་སོགས་ཡོད་པའི་ཕྱོགས་སུ་འགྲོ་བར་འདོད་པ་དང་མི་འདོད་པས། - The explainer mainly seeing their householder friends and so forth, whereas the listener is mentally unhappy འཆད་པ་པོ་གཙོ་བོར་མཛའ་བོ་སོགས་ཀྱི་ཁྱིམ་ལ་ལྟ་ལ་ཉན་པ་པོ་ཡིད་མི་བདེ་བས།
- Delight in self-isolation and busyness with the retinue
- Depending on the listener ཉན་པ་པོ་དང༌འབྲེལ་པ། (14)
- Relating only to oneself (2) རང་ཁོ་ན་ལ་བརྟེན་པ།
- Being disinclined and disillusioned, turning away from going to the lower migrations for the welfare of others, when the sufferings of the there lower realms are explained
ངན་སོང་གསུམ་གྱི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་བརྗོད་ན་གཞན་དོན་དུ་ངན་སོང་གི་འགྲོ་བར་འགྲོ་བ་ལ་ཕྱིར་ཕྱོགས་པ་སྟེ་མི་མོས་ཤིང་སྐྱོ་བ། - The arising of mental happiness wrt going to the higher realms and actualising Stream-Enterer and so forth for one's own welfare, when the gods and mere pacification are praised
ལྷ་རྣམས་དང་ཞི་བ་ཙམ་གྱི་བསྔགས་པ་བརྗོད་ན་བདེ་འགྲོར་འགྲོ་བ་དང་རྒྱུན་ཞུགས་སོགས་མངོན་དུ་བྱེད་པ་ལ་རང་དོན་དུ་ཡིད་བདེ་སྐྱེ་བ།
- Being disinclined and disillusioned, turning away from going to the lower migrations for the welfare of others, when the sufferings of the there lower realms are explained
- Relating to both self and others (21) རང་གཞན་གཉིས་ཀ་ལ་བརྟེན་པ།
ལམ་མ་ཞུགས་ནས་ས་བདུན་པའི་བར་དུ་ཡོད་དོ།
