Five Eyes
རང་གི་བདག་རྐྱེན་དུ་གྱུར་པའི་བསམ་གཏན་གྱི་དངོས་གཞིའི་སེམས་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་བྱུང་ཞིང་རང་ཡུལ་མངོན་སུམ་དུ་མཐོང་བས་རབ་ཏུ་ཕྱེ་བའི་རིགས་སུ་གནས་པའི་
རིག་པ། སྤྱན་གྱི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition: A knower abiding in the class distinguished by:
- Arising in dependence upon a mind that is an actual concentration, which is its empowering condition; and
- Directly perceiving its object.
Divisions:
- Physical Eye ཤའི་སྤྱན།
- Divine Eye ལྷའི་སྤྱན།
- Wisdom Eye ཤེས་རབ་ཀྱི་སྤྱན།
- Dharma Eye ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྤྱན།
- Buddha Eye སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱི་སྤྱན།
Boundaries (for definite Mahayana lineage):
- Attained on the occasion of the Mahayana path of accumulation.
- Attained on the occasion of the Mahayana path of preparation.
- The exalted wisdom of meditative equipoise of the Mahayana path of seeing onwards is pervaded by having attained the Wisdom Eye.
- The exalted wisdom of subsequent attainment of the Mahayana path of seeing onwards is pervaded by having attained the Dharma Eye.
- Attained on the Buddha ground and its similitude from the eighth ground.
Not definitive, since there are:
- Persons who have not entered the path but have attained an actual fourth concentration, who can possess the Divine Eye;
- Hearers who have attained the Dharma Eye due to attaining the clairvoyance of knowing others’ minds.
