Five Eyes

རང་གི་བདག་རྐྱེན་དུ་གྱུར་པའི་བསམ་གཏན་གྱི་དངོས་གཞིའི་སེམས་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་བྱུང་ཞིང་རང་ཡུལ་མངོན་སུམ་དུ་མཐོང་བས་རབ་ཏུ་ཕྱེ་བའི་རིགས་སུ་གནས་པའི་
རིག་པ། སྤྱན་གྱི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition: A knower abiding in the class distinguished by:

1. Arising in dependence upon a mind that is an actual concentration, which is its empowering condition; and
2. Directly perceiving its object.

Divisions:

1. Physical Eye ཤའི་སྤྱན།
2. Divine Eye ལྷའི་སྤྱན།
3. Wisdom Eye ཤེས་རབ་ཀྱི་སྤྱན།
4. Dharma Eye ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྤྱན།
5. Buddha Eye སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱི་སྤྱན།

Boundaries (for definite Mahayana lineage):

1. Attained on the occasion of the Mahayana path of accumulation.
2. Attained on the occasion of the Mahayana path of preparation.
3. The exalted wisdom of meditative equipoise of the Mahayana path of seeing onwards is pervaded by having attained the Wisdom Eye.
4. The exalted wisdom of subsequent attainment of the Mahayana path of seeing onwards is pervaded by having attained the Dharma Eye.
5. Attained on the Buddha ground and its similitude from the eighth ground.

Not definitive, since there are:

• Persons who have not entered the path but have attained an actual fourth concentration, who can possess the Divine Eye;
• Hearers who have attained the Dharma Eye due to attaining the clairvoyance of knowing others’ minds.
