Four Maras

Divisions:

1. Mara of the aggregates ཕུང་པོའི་བདུད།
2. Mara of the afflictions ཉོན་མོངས་པའི་བདུད།
3. Mara of the lord of death འཆི་བདག་གི་བདུད།
4. Mara of Devaputra ལྷའི་བུའི་བདུད།

བདུད་དེ་ལ་བཞིར་འཇོག་པའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ཡོད་དེ། གང་འཆི་བའི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ནས་ཕུང་པོའི་བདུད་དང༌། གང་གིས་འཆི་བའི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ནས་ཉོན་མོངས་པའི་བདུད་དང༌། འཆི་བའི་ངོ་བོའི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ནས་འཆི་བདག་གི་བདུད་དང༌། དེ་གསུམ་ལས་འདའ་བ་ལ་བར་དུ་གཅོད་པའི་དབང་དུ་བྱས་ནས་ལྷའི་བུའི་བདུད་བཞག་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Reason for positing four maras:

• In terms of what dies: the mara of the aggregates;
• In terms of due to what: the mara of the afflictions
• The entity of death: the mara of the lord of death;
• In terms of what obstructs passing beyond those three: the mara of devaputra

མྱ་ངན་ལས་འདས་པ་ལ་གེགས་བྱེད་པས་ན་བདུད་ཅེས་བྱའོ།
Etymology: due to acting to hinder passing beyond sorrow.

Abandonment (Hinayana):

• Mara of devaputra: path of seeing because of attaining the direct antidote to doubt wrt the sources of refuge མཐོང་ལམ་ཐོབ་ནས་ལྷའི་བུའི་བདུད་བཅོམ་སྟེ། སྐྱབས་གནས་ལ་ཐེ་ཚོམ་ཟ་བའི་ཐེ་ཚོམ་གྱི་དངོས་གཉེན་ཐོབ་པའི་ཕྱིར།
• Mara of the afflictions: Foe-Destroyer because of having completely abandoned the afflictive obscurations དགྲ་བཅོམ་ཐོབ་ནས་ཉོན་མོངས་པའི་བདུད་བཅོམ་སྟེ། ཉོན་སྒྲིབ་ཟད་པར་སྤངས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
• Coarse mara of the lord of death: Foe-Destroyer liberated through both factors because of having abandoned birth and death by way of possessing coarse striving
  གཉིས་ཀའི་ཆ་ལས་རྣམ་གྲོལ་གྱི་དགྲ་བཅོམ་ཐོབ་ནས་འཆི་བདག་གི་བདུད་རགས་པ་བཅོམ་སྟེ།
  འབད་རྩོལ་རགས་པ་དང་བཅས་པའི་སྒོ་ནས་སྐྱེ་འཆི་བྱེད་པ་སྤངས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
• Coarse mara of the aggregates: Nirvana without remainder because of having abandoned the contaminated aggregates that arose through the force of karma and afflictions
  ལྷག་མེད་མྱང་འདས་ཐོབ་ནས་ཕུང་པོའི་བདུད་རགས་པ་བཅོམ་སྟེ། ལས་ཉོན་གྱི་དབང་གིས་བྱུང་བའི་ཟག་བཅས་ཀྱི་ཕུང་པོ་སྤངས་པའི་ཕྱིར།

Abandonment (Mahayana):

• Mara of devaputra: Attaining signs of irreversibility because of attaining special physical and verbal conduct of irreversibility by way of attaining faith of conviction in the three jewels
  ཕྱིར་མི་ལྡོག་པའི་རྟགས་ཐོབ་ནས་ལྷའི་བུའི་བདུད་བཅོམ་སྟེ།
  དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་ལ་ཡིད་ཆེས་པའི་དད་པ་ཐོབ་པའི་སྒོ་ནས་ཕྱིར་མི་ལྡོག་པའི་ལུས་ངག་གི་སྤྱོད་པ་ཁྱད་པར་ཅན་ཐོབ་པའི་ཕྱིར།
• Coarse mara of the afflictions: From the eighth ground because of having abandoned the afflictive obscurations ས་བརྒྱད་པ་ནས་ཉོན་མོངས་པའི་བདུད་རགས་པ་བཅོམ་སྟེ། དེར་ཉོན་སྒྲིབ་སྤངས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
• Coarse mara of the lord of death: From eighth ground because of having abandoned the lord of death that creates death by way of being together with coarse striving
  དེར་འཆི་བདག་གི་བདུད་རགས་པ་བཅོམ་སྟེ། དེར་འབད་རྩོལ་རགས་པ་དང་བཅས་པའི་སྒོ་ནས་འཆི་བྱེད་ཀྱི་འཆི་བདག་གི་བདུད་སྤངས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
• Coarse mara of the aggregates: From eighth ground because of having abandoned mental bodies arisen in dependence upon the level of the imprints of ignorance and uncontaminated actions by way of being together with coarse striving དེར་ཕུང་པོའི་བདུད་རགས་པ་བཅོམ་སྟེ། འབད་རྩོལ་རགས་པ་དང་བཅས་པའི་སྒོ་ནས།
  མ་རིག་བག་ཆགས་ཀྱི་ས་དང་ཟག་མེད་ཀྱི་ལས་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་བྱུང་བའི་ཡིད་ལུས་སྤངས་པའི་ཕྱིར་ཏེ།

བདུད་བཞི་མ་ལུས་པར་བཅོམ་པ་དང་སངས་རྒྱས་པ་དུས་མཉམ་སྟེ།
Overcoming the four maras without exception is simultaneous with Buddhahood because:

• Overcoming the mara of the lord of death is pervaded by having abandoned inconceivable death and transference; and འཆི་བདག་གི་བདུད་བཅོམ་ན་བསམ་གྱིས་མི་ཁྱབ་པའི་འཆི་འཕོ་སྤངས་པས་ཁྱབ།
• Overcoming the mara of the aggregates is pervaded by not taking a mental body that arises in dependence upon the level of the imprints of ignorance and uncontaminated actions
  ཕུང་པོའི་བདུད་བཅོམ་ན། མ་རིག་བག་ཆགས་ཀྱི་ས་དང་ཟག་མེད་ཀྱི་ལས་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་འབྱུང་བའི་ཡིད་ལུས་མི་ལེན་པས་ཁྱབ་པའི་ཕྱིར།
