Nine points on Buddha-lineage

According to the presentation of Ornament for Mahayana Sutras:

1. That which establishes the existence of three different lineages of the three vehicles in the continua of sentient beings; སེམས་ཅན་གྱི་རྒྱུད་ལ་ཐེག་པ་གསུམ་གྱི་རིགས་ཐ་དད་པ་གསུམ་ཡོད་པའི་སྒྲུབ་བྱེད།
2. Establishing the Mahayana lineage to be superior to the Hinayana lineage;
   ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་རིགས་དེ་ཐེག་དམན་གྱི་རིགས་ལས་མཆོག་ཏུ་སྒྲུབ་པ།
3. The entity of lineage; རིགས་ཀྱི་ངོ་བོ།
4. The signs of having activated the Mahayana lineage; ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་རིགས་སད་པའི་རྟགས།
5. The classifications of lineage; རིགས་ཀྱི་རབ་དབྱེ།
6. The faults that obstruct the activating of the lineage; རིགས་སད་པ་ལ་བར་དུ་གཅོད་པའི་ཉེས་དམིགས།
7. The benefits of activating the Mahayana lineage; ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་རིགས་སད་པའི་ཕན་ཡོན།
8. The examples illustrating the naturally abiding lineage; རང་བཞིན་གནས་རིགས་མཚོན་པར་བྱེད་པའི་དཔེ།
9. The examples illustrating the developmental lineage. རྒྱས་འགྱུར་གྱི་རིགས་མཚོན་པར་བྱེད་པའི་དཔེ།

1. Three different such lineages exist because the three lineage-bearers: རིགས་ཅན་གསུམ།

1. Prior to entering a path have three dissimilar dispositions; ལམ་ལ་མ་ཞུགས་པའི་གནས་སྐབས་སུ་ཁམས་མི་འདྲ་བ་གསུམ།
2. Upon entering a path have three dissimilar aspirations; ལམ་དུ་ཞུགས་མ་ཐག་ཏུ་མོས་པ་མི་འདྲ་བ་གསུམ།
3. When practicing the path have three dissimilar practices; ལམ་ཉམས་སུ་ལེན་པའི་ཚེ་སྒྲུབ་པ་མི་འདྲ་བ་གསུམ།
4. Due to the force of that have three different enlightenments that are their final results.
   དེའི་དབང་གིས་མཐར་ཐུག་གི་འབྲས་བུ་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཐ་དད་པ་གསུམ།

2. The Mahayana lineage is superior to the Hinayana lineage because:

1. Mahayana virtues are superior to Hinayana virtues; ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་དགེ་བ་དེ་ཐེག་དམན་གྱི་དགེ་བ་ལས་ཁྱད་པར་དུ་འཕགས་པ།
2. The Mahayana lineage is able to act as the support of all qualities, whereas the Hinayana lineage is not able to do as such; ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་རིགས་དེ་ཡོན་ཏན་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱི་གཞི་རྟེན་བྱེད་ནུས། ཐེག་དམན་གྱི་རིགས་ཀྱིས་དེ་ལྟར་མི་ནུས་པ།
3. The Mahayana lineage acts as the cause of the great purpose, i.e. its resultant enlightenment that has completed the two collections, whereas the latter does not act as such;
   ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་རིགས་དེས་དོན་ཆེན་པོ་རང་འབྲས་ཚོགས་གཉིས་མཐར་ཕྱིན་པའི་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་རྒྱུ་བྱེད། ཅིག་ཤོས་ཀྱིས་དེ་ལྟར་མི་བྱེད།
4. When the Mahayana lineage ultimately attains the Nirvana that is its object of attainment the continuum of roots of virtues is not exhausted, whereas when the Hinayana lineage ultimately attains its enlightenment the continuum of roots of virtues is severed. ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་རིགས་དེས་མཐར་ཐུག་རང་གི་ཐོབ་བྱའི་
   མྱང་འདས་ཐོབ་པ་ན་དགེ་རྩའི་རྒྱུན་མི་ཟད་ལ། ཐེག་དམན་གྱི་རིགས་དེས་མཐར་ཐུག་རང་གི་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཐོབ་པ་ན་དགེ་རྩའི་རྒྱུན་ཆད་པ་ཡིན།

3. The characteristics, i.e. entity, of the Mahayana lineage can be posited because there are two by way of entity:

1. Naturally abiding lineage and རང་བཞིན་གནས་རིགས།
2. Developmental lineage. རྒྱས་འགྱུར་གྱི་རིགས།

རང་བཞིན་གནས་རིགས་རྟེན་དང་ཅིག་ཤོས་བརྟེན་པ་ཡིན།
The naturally abiding lineage is the support and the latter the supported.

4. There are four signs of having activated the Mahayana lineage, because prior to application in the actual Mahayana path there are: ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་ལམ་གྱི་དངོས་གཞི་ལ་སྦྱོར་བའི་སྔོན་དུ།

1. Greater compassion observing all sentient beings སེམས་ཅན་ཐམས་ཅད་ལ་དམིགས་པའི་སྙིང་རྗེ་ཤས་ཆེ་བ།
2. Greater belief in the Mahayana dharma ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་ཆོས་ལ་མོས་པ་ཤས་ཆེ་བ།
3. Forbearance in the hardships for the welfare of others གཞན་དོན་གྱི་ཕྱིར་དཀའ་སྤྱད་བཟོད་པ།
4. Diligence in the virtuous dharmas that are the practices of conqueror children, i.e. generosity and so forth. རྒྱལ་སྲས་ཀྱི་སྤྱོད་པ་སྦྱིན་སོགས་ཀྱི་དགེ་བའི་ཆོས་ལ་བརྩོན་པ།

5. There are four Mahayana lineages:

1. Definite lineage, རིགས་ངེས།
2. Indefinite lineage, རིགས་མ་ངེས་པ།
3. Lineage that is not seized by conditions, རྐྱེན་ཀྱིས་མི་འཕྲོགས་པ།
4. Lineage that is seized [by conditions]. རྐྱེན་ཀྱིས་འཕྲོགས་པ།

6. Four obstacles to awakening the Mahayana lineage: ཐེག་ཆེན་དུ་རིགས་སད་པའི་ཉེས་དམིགས་དེ་ལ་བཞི་ཡོད་དེ།

1. Strong familiarity with the afflictions ཉོན་མོངས་པ་གོམས་པ་ཤས་ཆེ་བ།
2. Being taken up by negative friends and spiritual teachers གྲོགས་ངན་པ་སྡིག་གྲོགས་ཀྱིས་ཟིན་པ།
3. Inability to practice due to being deprived of the material conditions for practicing dharma
   ཆོས་སྒྲུབ་པའི་རྐྱེན་ཡོ་བྱད་ཀྱིས་འཕོངས་ནས་སྒྲུབ་མི་ནུས་པ།
4. Being under another's power (the king etc.) without the freedom to practice dharma
   ཆོས་བྱེད་པ་ལ་རང་དབང་དུ་མི་འགྱུར་བར་རྒྱལ་པོ་ལ་སོགས་པའི་གཞན་དབང་དུ་སོང་བ།

7. There are four benefits of activating the Mahayana lineage, because the person who has activated the Mahayana lineage possesses the qualities of: ཐེག་ཆེན་དུ་རིགས་སད་པའི་གང་ཟག་དེ།

1. Not quickly going to the lower realms despite having accumulated the actions definite to be experienced as rebirth in the lower realms, but rather it taking a long time to go there; ངན་སོང་དུ་སྐྱེ་བར་མྱོང་ངེས་ཀྱི་ལས་བསགས་ནའང་མྱུར་དུ་ངན་སོང་དུ་མི་འགྲོ་བར་ཡུན་རིང་མོ་ཞིག་ནས་དེར་འགྲོ་ཞིང་།
2. Being liberated without spending very long there; དེར་ཡུན་རིང་དུ་མི་གནས་པར་ཐར་པ་དང།
3. Even while being there a little while, experiencing only a little suffering;
   དེར་ཅུང་ཟད་གནས་པའི་དུས་སུ་ཡང་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཆུང་ངུ་ཙམ་མྱོང་བ་དང།
4. By way of possessing disillusionment, acting to ripen the sentient beings who are there.
   འཁོར་བ་ལ་སྐྱོ་བ་དང་བཅས་པའི་སྒོ་ནས་དེར་གནས་པའི་སེམས་ཅན་སྨིན་པར་བྱེད་པ།

རང་བཞིན་གནས་རིགས་དེ་གསེར་གྱི་དཔེས་ཤེས་པར་བྱ་བ་ཡིན་ཏེ། དཔེར་ན། གསེར་གྱི་གཏེར་དེ་གསེར་མང་བ་དང། གསེར་འོད་གསལ་བ་དང།
གསེར་དྲི་མ་མེད་པ་དང། གསེར་གྱི་ལས་སུ་རུང་བ་བཞིའི་འབྱུང་ཁུངས་ཡིན་པ་དེ་བཞིན་དུ། ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་རང་བཞིན་གནས་རིགས་ཀྱང་།
8. The naturally abiding lineage should be known through the example of gold because just like a treasury of gold is the source of much gold, clear golden light, gold’s stainlessness, and gold’s workability; similarly, the Mahayana naturally abiding lineage is the source of:

1. Inestimable virtue, དགེ་བ་དཔག་ཏུ་མེད་པ་དང།
2. Excellent exalted wisdom realising selflessness, བདེན་མེད་རྟོགས་པའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཕུན་སུམ་ཚོགས་པ་དང།
3. Freedom from the stains of the afflictions, ཉོན་མོངས་པའི་དྲི་མ་མེད་པ་དང།
4. Excellent meditative stabilisations, such as clairvoyances and so forth.
   མངོན་ཤེས་སོགས་ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་ཕུན་སུམ་ཚོགས་པ་འབྱུང་བའི་གནས་ཡིན།

ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་རྒྱས་འགྱུར་གྱི་རིགས་དེ་རིན་པོ་ཆེའི་འབྱུང་ཁུངས་དང་འདྲ་བ་ཡིན་ཏེ། རིན་པོ་ཆེའི་འབྱུང་ཁུངས་ཀྱི་གནས་དེ་རིན་པོ་ཆེའི་རིགས་ཕུན་སུམ་ཚོགས་པ། དབྱིབས་ཕུན་སུམ་ཚོགས་པ། ཁ་དོག་ཕུན་སུམ་ཚོགས་པ། ཚད་ཕུན་སུམ་ཚོགས་པ་རྣམས་འབྱུང་བའི་གནས་ཡིན་པ་དེ་བཞིན་དུ།
ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་རྒྱས་འགྱུར་གྱི་རིགས་དེ་ཡང་།
9. The Mahayana developmental lineage is similar to a source of jewels because just like the jewel-mine is the source of the jewels of excellent type, excellent shape, excellent colour, and excellent measure; similarly, the Mahayana developmental lineage is the source of:

1. The causes of the great bodhisattva that is its result, རང་གི་འབྲས་བུར་གྱུར་པའི་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཆེན་པོའི་རྒྱུ་དང་།
2. The great wisdom realising emptiness conjoined with special wisdom,
   ཐབས་ཁྱད་པར་ཅན་གྱིས་ཟིན་པའི་བདེན་མེད་རྟོགས་པའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཆེན་པོ་དང།
3. Superior meditative stabilisations, ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་ཁྱད་པར་དུ་འཕགས་པ་དང།
4. The welfare of many sentient beings. སེམས་ཅན་མང་པོའི་དོན་གྱི་འབྱུང་གནས་ཡིན།
