Objects, causes and entity of refuge

རྒྱུ་གཉིས་པོ་དེ་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་ལ་བསམ་པ་ཐག་པ་ནས་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མཐའ་དག་ལས་སྐྱོབ་པར་བློ་ལིངས་ཀྱིས་སྒྱུར་ཞིང་དམ་བཅའ་ལ་ཁས་ལེན་པས་རབ་ཏུ་ཕྱེ་བའི་རིགས་སུ་གནས་པ། སྐྱབས་འགྲོའི་ངོ་བོ།
Entity: That abiding in the class that is distinguished by 1) sincere mental certainty in the three jewels to protect from all suffering, in dependence upon those two causes, and 2) making the promise.

Divisions:

• By way of entity: with body, speech, and mind.
• By way of capacity:
  • Small: going for refuge in order to be liberated merely from one’s own sufferings of the lower realms. རང་ཉིད་ངན་འགྲོའི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཙམ་ལས་ཐར་པའི་ཕྱིར་སྐྱབས་སུ་འགྲོ་བ།
  • Middling: going for refuge in order to be liberated merely from one’s own sufferings of samsara.
    རང་ཉིད་འཁོར་བའི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ལས་ཐར་པའི་ཕྱིར་དུ་སྐྱབས་སུ་འགྲོ་བ།
  • Great: going for refuge to the three jewels in order to liberate all sentient beings from the sufferings of samsara. སེམས་ཅན་འཁོར་བའི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ལས་ཐར་པའི་ཕྱིར་དུ་དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་ལ་སྐྱབས་སུ་འགྲོ་བ།
• By way of time: Cause (sentient beings) and Result (Buddha ground)
• By way of subtlety:
  • Arisen from communication: བརྡའ་རྣམས་ལས་བྱུང་བའི་སྐྱབས་འགྲོ།
    Going for refuge following others’ instructions, such as the abbot and masters.
  • Arisen from dharmata: ཆོས་ཉིད་ཀྱི་སྟོབས་ཀྱིས་ཐོབ་པའི་སྐྱབས་འགྲོ།
    Going for refuge arisen from the sudden dawning of imprints of having gone for refuge previously and that arisen through the force of realising form's dharmata.

The three jewels are suitable as the refuge of those seeking liberation because of:

• Oneself being free from all fears རང་ཉིད་འཇིགས་པ་མཐའ་དག་དང་བྲལ།
• Being skilled in the means of liberating others from all fear གཞན་འཇིགས་པ་མཐའ་དག་ལས་གྲོལ་བའི་ཐབས་ལ་མཁས།
• Working for all others with an unbiased great compassion གཞན་ལ་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཆེན་པོ་ཉེ་རིང་མེད་པར་ཀུན་ལ་འཇུག
• Being a protector and friend to all embodied beings ལུས་ཅན་མཐའ་དག་གི་མགོན་སྐྱབས་དང་དཔུང་གཉེན་དམ་པ་མཛད་པ།

There are causes for going for refuge:

1. Oneself fearing all suffering, and རང་ཉིད་སྡུག་བསྔལ་མཐའ་དག་གིས་འཇིགས།
2. Knowing the three precious jewels have the ability to protect from those. དེ་ལས་སྐྱོབ་པའི་ནུས་པ་དཀོན་མཆོག་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་གསུམ་ལ་ཡོད་པར་ཤེས་པ།

སྐྱབས་སོང་བསོད་ནམས་གཟུགས་མཆིས་ན། སྟོང་གསུམ་འདོ་ཡང་སྣོད་དུ་ཆུང་།
རྒྱ་མཚོ་ཆེན་པོ་ཆུ་ཡི་གཏེར། ཕུལ་གྱིས་གཞལ་བར་ག་ལ་ནུས།
Benefits: Āryaśūra's Brief Perfection of Wisdom:
Were the merits of going for refuge to take form,
Even the billion world systems would be too small a vessel;
How could a cupped hand measure
The vast ocean, the storehouse of water?
