Purpose for presenting the paths in multiple chapters
སྐབས་དང་པོ་གསུམ་དུ་སྦྱོར་མཐོང་སྒོམ་གསུམ་བསྟན་པ་དང༌། སྦྱོར་བ་དང་པོ་གསུམ་དུ་སྦྱོར་མཐོང་སྒོམ་གསུམ་བསྟན་པ་ལ་དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ།
དེ་ལ་རྣམ་བཅད་དང་ཡོངས་གཅོད་ཀྱི་དགོས་པ་གཉིས་གཉིས་སུ་ཡོད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
There is a purpose for indicating:
- The paths of preparation, seeing, and meditation in the first three chapters
- The paths of preparation, seeing, and meditation for the first three applications (ch4-6)
Because of each negating something that is to be negated.
Mode of indication: (བསྟན་ཚུལ།)
- First three chapters: in terms of the objects to be practiced (ཉམས་སུ་བླང་བྱའི་ཡུལ།)
- Middle three chapters: in terms of the object-possessors doing the practice (ཉམས་སུ་ལེན་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཡུལ་ཅན།)
First chapter: སྐབས་དང་པོར་སྦྱོར་མཐོང་སྒོམ་གསུམ་བསྟན་པ་ལ་རྣམ་བཅད་དང་ཡོངས་གཅོད་ཀྱི་དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ།
- Ceasing wrong conceptions thinking that the aspects of an exalted knower of all aspects are only cultivated on the occasion of the paths of accumulation and preparation, and not cultivated elsewhere
རྣམ་བཅད་ལ་རྣམ་མཁྱེན་གྱི་རྣམ་པ་དེ་ཚོགས་སྦྱོར་གྱི་གནས་སྐབས་འབའ་ཞིག་ཏུ་སྒོམ་གྱི། དེ་ལས་གཞན་དུ་མི་སྒོམ་སྙམ་པའི་ལོག་རྟོག་བཀག་ནས། - To make known that it is necessary to cultivate those on the occasion of all three paths of preparation, seeing and meditation ཡོངས་གཅོད་ལ་དེ་སྦྱོར་མཐོང་སྒོམ་གསུམ་གའི་གནས་སྐབས་སུ་སྒོམ་དགོས་སོ་ཞེས་ཤེས་པར་བྱ་བའི་ཆེད་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Second chapter: སྐབས་གཉིས་པར་དེ་གསུམ་བསྟན་པ་ལ་རྣམ་བཅད་ཡོངས་གཅོད་ཀྱི་དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ།
- Ceasing wrong conceptions thinking that the aspects of a knower of paths are only cultivated from the first ground and up to the sixth, and not cultivated elsewhere
རྣམ་བཅད་ལ་ལམ་ཤེས་ཀྱི་རྣམ་པ་དེ་ས་དང་པོ་ནས་དྲུག་པའི་བར་འབའ་ཞིག་ཏུ་སྒོམ་གྱི། དེ་ལས་གཞན་དུ་མི་སྒོམ་སྙམ་པའི་ལོག་རྟོག་བཀག་ནས། - To make known that it is necessary to cultivate those on the occasion of all three paths of preparation, seeing and meditation ཡོངས་གཅོད་ལ་དེ་སྦྱོར་མཐོང་སྒོམ་གསུམ་གའི་གནས་སྐབས་སུ་སྒོམ་དགོས་སོ་ཞེས་ཤེས་པར་བྱ་བའི་ཆེད་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Third chapter: སྐབས་གསུམ་པར་དེ་གསུམ་བསྟན་པ་ལ་དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ།
- Ceasing wrong conceptions thinking that the aspects of a knower of bases are only cultivated on the seventh ground, and not cultivated elsewhere
རྣམ་བཅད་ལ་གཞི་ཤེས་ཀྱི་རྣམ་པ་དེ་ས་བདུན་པ་འབའ་ཞིག་ཏུ་སྒོམ་ཞིང་དེ་ལས་གཞན་དུ་མི་སྒོམ་སྙམ་པའི་ལོག་རྟོག་བཀག་ནས། - To make known as above ཡོངས་གཅོད་ལ་སྔར་བཞིན་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Fourth chapter: སྐབས་བཞི་པར་དེ་གསུམ་བསྟན་པ་ལ་དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ།
- Ceasing wrong conceptions thinking that the applications in complete aspects are only cultivated on the eighth ground, and not cultivated elsewhere
རྣམ་བཅད་ལ་རྣམ་རྫོགས་སྦྱོར་བ་ས་བརྒྱད་པ་འབའ་ཞིག་ཏུ་སྒོམ་ཞིང་དེ་ལས་གཞན་དུ་མི་སྒོམ་སྙམ་པའི་ལོག་རྟོག་བསལ་ནས། - To make known as above ཡོངས་གཅོད་ལ་སྔར་བཞིན་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Fifth chapter: སྐབས་ལྔ་པར་དེ་གསུམ་བསྟན་པ་ལ་དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ།
- Ceasing wrong conceptions thinking that peak application is only cultivated on the ninth and tenth grounds, and not cultivated elsewhere
རྣམ་བཅད་ལ་རྩེ་སྦྱོར་ས་དགུ་པ་དང་བཅུ་པའི་དཀྱིལ་སྟོད་འབའ་ཞིག་ཏུ་སྒོམ་ཞིང༌། དེ་ལས་གཞན་དུ་མི་སྒོམ་སྙམ་པའི་ལོག་རྟོག་བསལ་ནས། - To make known as above ཡོངས་གཅོད་ལ་སྔར་བཞིན་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Sixth chapter: སྐབས་དྲུག་པར་དེ་གསུམ་བསྟན་པ་ལ་རྣམ་བཅད་དང་ཡོངས་གཅོད་ཀྱི་དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ།
- Ceasing wrong conceptions thinking that serial application is only cultivated on the latter part of the tenth ground, and not cultivated elsewhere
རྣམ་བཅད་ལ་མཐར་གྱིས་སྦྱོར་བ་ས་བཅུ་པའི་དཀྱིལ་སྨད་འབའ་ཞིག་ཏུ་སྒོམ་གྱི་དེ་ལས་གཞན་དུ་མི་སྒོམ་སྙམ་པའི་ལོག་རྟོག་བཀག་ནས། - To make known that it is necessary to cultivate those on the occasion of all three paths of preparation, seeing and meditation
ཡོངས་གཅོད་ལ་དེ་སྦྱོར་མཐོང་སྒོམ་གསུམ་གའི་གནས་སྐབས་སུ་སྒོམ་དགོས་སོ་ཞེས་ཤེས་པར་བྱ་བའི་ཆེད་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Similar assertion is by Serlingpa:
- Exalted knower of all aspects: only path of accumulation
- Knower of paths: only from the second to sixth grounds
- Knower of bases: only on the seventh ground
- Application in complete aspects: only on the eighth ground
- Peak application: only on the ninth and beginning of tenth ground
- Serial application: only on the latter part of tenth ground
- Instantaneous application: only on the end of the continuum
- Dharmakaya: only on the Buddha-ground
Up a level: Perfection of Wisdom
