Purpose of alternations

བསམ་གཏན་སྤེལ་གོམས་བྱས་པ་ཆོས་ཅན། དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ། ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་ལ་རྩལ་བྱང་བར་བྱ་བའི་ཆེད་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
The subject - familiarising with alternating concentrations - there is a purpose: in order to perfect skill in concentration.

འོ་ན། འགོག་པ་དང་འདོད་སེམས་ཁོ་ན་སྤེལ་བའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ཅི་ཡིན་ཞེ་ན། དེའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ཡོད་དེ།
འགོག་སྙོམས་དེ་ཁམས་གསུམ་གྱི་སེམས་ཀྱི་ནང་ནས་ཤིན་ཏུ་ཕྲ་བར་བྱས་ནས་སྙོམས་པར་འཇུག
འདོད་སེམས་དེ་ཁམས་གསུམ་གྱི་སེམས་ཀྱི་ནང་ནས་རགས་པ་མཐར་ཐུག་པ་ཡིན་པས།
ཁམས་གསུམ་གྱི་སེམས་ཕྲ་རགས་གཉིས་སྤེལ་བའི་ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་ལ་རྩལ་བྱང་ཚུལ་ཆེས་ལྷག་པར་གྱུར་པའི་དགོས་པ་ཡོད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Why are only cessation and desire realm minds alternated?
This is because the absorption of cessation is the subtlest mind of the three realms and a desire realm mind is the coarsest mind of the three realms; so the purpose is a surpassing mode of perfecting skill in concentration by alternating the subtlest and coarsest minds of the three realms.

དེས་ན་ས་དང་པོའི་སྒོམ་ལམ་ལ་གནས་པའི་བྱང་སེམས་འཕགས་པས་སྦྱོར་བ་སེང་གེ་རྣམ་བསྒྱིངས་ཀྱི་ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་ལ་སྙོམས་པར་འཇུག་པ་ཆོས་ཅན།
དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ། ཐོད་རྒལ་གྱི་སྙོམས་འཇུག་ཐོབ་པར་བྱ་བའི་ཆེད་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
The subject - Arya bodhisattvas abiding on the first ground of the path of meditation entering absorption into the preparatory concentration of the loftily-looking-lion - there is a purpose: in order to attain leaping absorptions.

ཐོད་རྒལ་གྱི་སྦྱོར་བ་གཉིས་སྔོན་དུ་བཏང་བའི་ས་གཉིས་པ་པ་ཆོས་ཅན། ཡར་སོང་ཐོད་རྒལ་དུ་སྙོམས་པར་འཇུག་པ་ཡིན་ཏེ།
བསམ་གཟུགས་བརྒྱད་ལ་འགོག་པ་སྤེལ་ནས་ལུགས་མཐུན་དུ་སྙོམས་པར་འཇུག་པའི་བྱང་སེམས་སྒོམ་ལམ་པ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
The subject - a second-grounder preceded by the two preparations for leaping - they enter leaping absorptions going up because they are a bodhisattva on the second ground that enters absorptions in forward order through alternating the eight concentrations and formless absorptions with cessation.

དེ་འདྲའི་བྱང་སེམས་སྒོམ་ལམ་པ་དེས་ཡར་སོང་ཐོད་རྒལ་ལ་སྙོམས་པར་འཇུག་པའི་རྗེས་སུ་སྲིད་རྩེའི་ནུད་ཆུང་བྱས་པ་ཆོས་ཅན། དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ།
མཚམས་འཛིན་གྱི་འདོད་སེམས་མངོན་དུ་བྱེད་པ་ལ་དབང་བར་བྱ་བའི་ཆེད་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
The subject - such a bodhisattva on the path of meditation manifesting the Peak of Existence Small Retreat after entering leaping absorptions going up - there is a purpose: in order to master manifesting the Intermediary Desire Realm Mind.

དེས་མཚམས་འཛིན་གྱི་འདོད་སེམས་མངོན་དུ་བྱས་པ་ཆོས་ཅན། དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ། མར་འོང་ཐོད་རྒལ་ལ་སྙོམས་པར་འཇུག་པར་བྱ་བའི་ཆེད་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
The subject - their manifesting the Intermediary Desire Realm Mind - there is a purpose: in order to enter leaping absorptions coming down.

སྲིད་རྩེའི་ནུད་ཆུང་དང་མཚམས་འཛིན་གྱི་འདོད་སེམས་སྔོན་དུ་བཏང་བའི་ས་གཉིས་པ་བ་ཆོས་ཅན། མར་འོང་ཐོད་རྒལ་དུ་སྙོམས་པར་འཇུག་པ་ཡིན་ཏེ།
མཐར་གནས་སྙོམས་འཇུག་དགུ་ལ་འདོད་སེམས་སྤེལ་ནས་ལུགས་ལྡོག་ཏུ་སྙོམས་པར་འཇུག་པའི་བྱང་སེམས་སྒོམ་ལམ་པ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར་རོ།
The subject - a second-grounder preceded by the Peak of Existence Small Retreat and the Intermediary Desire Realm Mind - they enter leaping absorptions coming down because they are a bodhisattva on the path of meditation that enters absorptions in reverse order through alternating the nine serial absorptions with a desire realm mind.
