Rhinoceros-like and Communal Solitary Realisers

Difference in traversing the path:

1. Rhinoceros-like Solitary Realisers བསེ་རུ་ལྟ་བུའི་རང་རྒྱལ།
2. Communal Solitary Realisers ཚོགས་སྤྱོད་ཀྱི་རང་རྒྱལ།
   1. Preceded by preparation but not a result སྦྱོར་བ་སྔོན་དུ་བཏང་ལ་འབྲས་བུ་སྔོན་དུ་མ་བཏང་བའི་ཚོགས་སྤྱོད་ཀྱི་རང་རྒྱལ།
   2. Preceded by both preparation and a result སྦྱོར་བ་དང་འབྲས་བུ་གཉིས་ཀ་སྔོན་དུ་བཏང་བའི་ཚོགས་སྤྱོད་ཀྱི་རང་རྒྱལ།

Rhinoceros-like: (definite lineage)

• Definite to accumulate 100 eons worth of merit during their path of accumulation (relying on holy beings)
• In their final lifetime, proceed from the heat level of their path of preparation and up to their enlightenment in a single session.

མཁས་པར་བྱ་བའི་དངོས་པོ་དྲུག་ཡོད་དེ།
ཕུང་པོ་དང༌། ཁམས་དང༌། སྐྱེ་མཆེད་དང༌། རྟེན་འབྲེལ་དང༌། གནས་དང་གནས་མ་ཡིན་པ་དང༌། བདེན་པ་ལ་མཁས་པ་རྣམས་སུ་ཡོད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Done through mastering the six: The aggregates, the constituents, the sense-spheres, dependent-arising, the appropriate and inappropriate, and the truths.

Communal preceded by preparation but not a result:

• Indefinite accumulation of merit
• Through relying upon holy beings, attain the first three levels of the path of preparation (i.e. up to forbearance level) but are unable to attain a Result of the Way of the Sramana in that life (penultimate)
• In the next lifetime (final), they master the six and actualise the remaining paths.

Communal preceded by both preparation and a result:

• Indefinite accumulation of merit
• Through relying upon holy beings, attain a Result of the Way of the Sramana but are unable to attain the state of an Arhat in that life (penultimate?)
• In the next lifetime (final), they attain the state of an Arhat through mastering the six by means of an uncontaminated path

These apply to Stream-Enterers and Once-Returners who enter the Solitary Realiser path. Non-returners and Hearer Arhats do not enter the Solitary Realiser path.

All three types:

• Believe in the profound dharma ཆོས་ཟབ་མོ་ལ་མོས་པ།
• Diligently realise profound dependent-arising རྟེན་འབྲེལ་ཟབ་མོ་ལ་སོ་སོར་རྟོགས་པ་ལྷུར་ལེན་པ།
• Mentally engage and abide in the three doors of liberation རྣམ་ཐར་སྒོ་གསུམ་ཡིད་ལ་བྱེད་ཅིང་གནས་པ།

Difference in physical abiding:

• Rhinoceros-like Solitary Realisers abide alone; whereas བསེ་རུ་ལྟ་བུའི་རང་རྒྱལ་གཅིག་པུར་གནས་པ།
• Assembly Solitary Realisers abide together with associates ཚོགས་སྤྱོད་ཀྱི་རང་རྒྱལ་གྲོགས་དང་བཅས་ཏེ་གནས་པ།

རང་རྒྱལ་རྣམས་གྲོང་དང་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་དུ་རྒྱུ་ཞིང་གནས་པའི་ཚེ། ལུས་ཤིན་ཏུ་བསྲུང་བ་དང་། དབང་པོ་རྣམས་ཤིན་ཏུ་བསྡམས་པ་དང༌།
དྲན་པ་ལ་ཤིན་ཏུ་གནས་ཤིང་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་སོགས་སུ་བསོད་སྙོམས་ལ་རྒྱུ་ཞིང་རྫུ་འཕྲུལ་བསྟན་ཏེ། གདུལ་བྱ་རྣམས་སྨིན་གྲོལ་ལ་འགོད་པར་མཛད་དོ།
When Solitary Realisers go around and stay in villages and cities, they thoroughly guard their body, thoroughly restrain their senses, and thoroughly abide in mindfulness; they go for alms and display magical powers in cities and so forth, thereby acting to set disciples in liberation.
