Seven illustrations of emptiness

སྣང་བ་རྣམ་བདུན་ཤེས་བྱེད་དོ། །ཞེས་པའི་དོན་ནི། ཆོས་ཐམས་ཅད་ཆོས་ཅན། བདེན་པར་མེད་དེ། རྟེན་འབྲེལ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར། དཔེར་ན།
The subject - all phenomena - lack true existence because of being dependent-arisings; for example, like:

1. A dream རྨི་ལམ་དང༌།
2. An illusion སྒྱུ་མ་དང༌།
3. A mirage སྨིག་རྒྱུ་དང༌།
4. An echo སྒྲ་བརྙན་དང༌།
5. A reflection གཟུགས་བརྙན་དང༌།
6. A city of smell-eaters དྲི་ཟའི་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་དང༌།
7. An emanation སྤྲུལ་པ་བཞིན་ནོ།

དཔེ་བདུན་པོ་དེ་ཆོས་ཅན། བདེན་པར་མེད་དེ། སྣང་ཚུལ་དང་གནས་ཚུལ་ཅུང་ཟད་ཀྱང་མི་མཐུན་པའི་ཕྱིར་ཏེ། དཔེར་ན་ནམ་མཁའི་པདྨོ་བཞིན་ནོ།
The subject - these seven examples - they lack true existence because their mode of appearance and mode of abiding does not accord even in the slightest; for example, like a sky-flower.

Reasons for such appearances arising in relation to the examples:

1. Dream-like due to the appearance of such and such to the consciousness as the thorough transformation of imprints བག་ཆགས་ཀྱིས་རྣམ་ཤེས་ལ་དེ་དང་དེར་ཡོངས་སུ་འགྱུར་བར་སྣང་བས་རྨི་ལམ་ལྟ་བུ་དང༌།
2. Illusion-like due to arising from the collecting together of the mantra and medicine affecting the eyes
   མིག་བསླད་པའི་སྔགས་དང་སྨན་མཉམ་དུ་ཚོགས་པ་ལས་བྱུང་བས་སྒྱུ་མ་ལྟ་བུ་དང༌།
3. Mirage-like due to a contradictory appearance on account of appearing truly existent but lacking true existence བདེན་པར་སྣང་ཡང་བདེན་པར་མེད་ཕྱིར་འགལ་བ་སྣང་བས་སྨིག་རྒྱུ་ལྟ་བུ་དང༌།
4. Echo-like due to appearing in dependence upon conditions རྐྱེན་ལ་རག་ལས་ཏེ་སྣང་བས་སྒྲ་བརྙན་ལྟ་བུ་དང༌།
5. Due to appearing without transferring from or passing beyond what was projected by the imprint of whatever deposited such mode of an object of knowledge such as an illusion, it is called (in different commentaries):
   ཤེས་བྱའི་ཚུལ་གཟུགས་བརྙན་འཇོག་བྱེད་ལྟ་བུའི་གང་གི་བག་ཆགས་ཀྱིས་ཇི་ལྟར་འཕངས་པ་ལས་མ་འཕོས་པའམ་མི་འདའ་བར་སྣང་བས་ན།
   1. Optical illusion མིག་ཡོར་ལྟ་བུ།
   2. Illusion-like གཟུགས་བརྙན་ལྟ་བུ།
   3. Appearance of trickling-down hairs to those with an eye-disease རབ་རིབ་ཅན་ལ་སྐྲ་ཤད་འཛག་པར་སྣང་བ།
   4. བག་འདྲའི་རྩེ་མོ། (might be same as / included in 5)
   5. A whirling fire-brand and so forth མགལ་མེ་མྱུར་དུ་བསྐོར་བ་སོགས།
6. Like a city of smell-eaters due to appearing without a support for that which abides
   གནས་པར་བྱ་བའི་རྟེན་མེད་པར་སྣང་བས་དྲི་ཟའི་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་ལྟ་བུ་དང༌།
7. Emanation-like due to appearing devoid of causes, as the mere functioning of body and speech
   ལུས་ངག་གི་བྱེད་པ་དེ་ཁོ་ནར་རྒྱུ་དང་བྲལ་བར་སྣང་བས་སྤྲུལ་པ་ལྟ་བུ།
