Six Clairvoyances
Definition: That abiding in the class distinguished by directly perceiving its object in dependence upon a mind that is an actual concentration that is its empowering condition.
Divisions:
- Clairvoyance of magical emanation
- Clairvoyance of the divine ear
- Clairvoyance of knowing others’ minds
- Clairvoyance remembering previous states
- Clairvoyance of the divine eye
- Clairvoyance of the exhaustion of contamination
Boundaries:
- The first five clairvoyances exist in the continua of Outsiders, Hearers and Solitary Realisers, as well as Bodhisattvas.
- The sixth clairvoyance exists in the continua of all Arhats who have attained an actual concentration.
Purpose:
- One could directly hear the coarse and subtle sounds of those teaching the Dharma in countless world-systems; and
- Directly know the connection and so forth one has with teachers of the Dharma and students from past lifetimes,
- As well as where they are now and so forth;
- Having properly motivated disciples through magical emanations, and
- Properly analysed to be suitable vessels, i.e. whether their continua possess attachment or not and so forth,
- One teaches the methods for attaining liberation that one directly knows.
Through these, one will quickly complete the practices in one’s continuum and, having completed those, quickly complete the exalted knower of all aspects.
