Sixteen Attributes of the Four Truths

Suffering: Taking the subject – the appropriated aggregates – it follows that:

  1. They are impermanent because of arising occasionally. མི་རྟག་པའི་རྣམ་པ།
  2. They are suffering because of being under the power of karma and afflictions. སྡུག་བསྔལ་བའི་རྣམ་པ།
  3. They are referred to as the aspect of being empty of a separate self because there is no separate controller self. དོན་གཞན་གྱི་བདག་གིས་སྟོང་པའི་རྣམ་པ།
  4. They are referred to as the aspect of being selfless because of not being established in the nature of an autonomous self. བདག་མེད་པའི་རྣམ་པ།

Origins: Taking the subject – actions and craving from among the twelve links – it follows that:

  1. They are referred to as the aspect of cause because of being the root of their resultant sufferings.
    རྒྱུའི་རྣམ་པ།
  2. They are referred to as the aspect of origin because they generate their resultant sufferings again and again. ཀུན་འབྱུང་བའི་རྣམ་པ།
  3. They are referred to as the aspect of thorough arising because they strongly generate their resultant sufferings. རབ་སྐྱེའི་རྣམ་པ།

Taking the subject – the craving for existence – it follows:

  1. It is referred to as the aspect of condition because of being the cooperative condition for its resultant sufferings. རྐྱེན་གྱི་རྣམ་པ།

Cessation: Taking the subject – the separation that is a permanent elimination of suffering through the force of an antidote – it follows that:

  1. It is referred to as the aspect of cessation because of being a separation of having abandoned sufferings. འགོག་པའི་རྣམ་པ།
  2. It is referred to as the aspect of pacification because of being a separation of having abandoned the afflictions. ཞི་བའི་རྣམ་པ།
  3. It is referred to as the aspect of pristine because of being liberation in the nature of benefit and happiness. གྱ་ནོམ་པའི་རྣམ་པ།
  4. It is referred to as the aspect of definite emergence because of being an irreversible liberation.
    ངེས་འབྱུང་གི་རྣམ་པ།

Paths: Taking the subject – the exalted wisdom directly realising the selflessness of persons – it follows that:

  1. It is referred to as the aspect of path because of abiding in the class of path leading to liberation.
    ལམ་གྱི་རྣམ་པ།
  2. It is referred to as the aspect of suitability because it must be the direct antidote to the afflictions.
    རིགས་པའི་རྣམ་པ།
  3. It is referred to as the aspect of accomplishment because of unmistakenly accomplishing the mode of abiding of the mind. སྒྲུབ་པའི་རྣམ་པ།
  4. It is referred to as the aspect of deliverance because of being a path that permanently eliminates suffering. ངེས་འབྱིན་གྱི་རྣམ་པ།
