Ten totalities

རང་གི་བདག་རྐྱེན་དུ་གྱུར་པའི་དངོས་གཞིའི་སེམས་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་རང་གི་དམིགས་ཡུལ་ཇི་ལྟར་བཞེད་པ་ལྟར་སྤྲོ་བར་ནུས་པས་རབ་ཏུ་ཕྱེ་བའི་རིག་པ།
ཟད་པར་གྱི་སྐྱེ་མཆེད་ཀྱི་ངོ་བོ།
Entity: A knower distinguished by the ability to emanate its objects of observation in accordance with one's wishes in dependence upon the mind of an actual [concentration or absorption] that is its empowering condition.

དེ་ལ་ཤེས་རབ་དང་ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་ཅི་རིགས་སུ་ཡོད།
It can be either wisdom or concentration.

Divisions: Concentrations of the: ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན།

1. Totality of earth ཟད་པར་ས།
2. Totality of water ཟད་པར་ཆུ།
3. Totality of fire ཟད་པར་མེ།
4. Totality of wind ཟད་པར་རླུང་།
5. Totality of blue ཟད་པར་སྔོན་པོ།
6. Totality of yellow ཟད་པར་སེར་པོ།
7. Totality of red ཟད་པར་དམར་པོ།
8. Totality of white ཟད་པར་དཀར་པོ།
9. Totality of space ཟད་པར་ནམ་མཁའ།
10. Totality of consciousness ཟད་པར་རྣམ་ཤེས།

Gyaltsab:

• 1-4: Four elements འབྱུང་བ་བཞི།
• 5-8: Arisen from elements འབྱུང་འགྱུར་བཞི།

Mental supports:

• First eight arise in dependence upon an actual fourth concentration
  དང་པོ་བརྒྱད་བསམ་གཏན་བཞི་པ་དང་།
• Last two arise in dependence upon the first two actual formless absorptions (respectively)
  ཐ་མ་གཉིས་གཟུགས་མེད་དང་པོ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་དངོས་གཞི་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་སྐྱེ་བ་ཡིན།

སྔར་སྦྱང་བ་བྱས་པས་འགྲུབ་ཚུལ། སྔར་གོམས་པར་བྱས་པས་ནི་སོ་སོའི་དམིགས་རྟེན་མཐོང་བ་ཙམ་གྱིས་དེ་དང་དེའི་ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་མངོན་དུ་འགྱུར་བ་ཡིན་ཏེ།
Mode of accomplishment for those previously trained: Through merely perceiving their individual object-support, such and such a concentration manifests. Thereby: འདི་ལྟར།

• Through merely seeing water (in a waterfall etc.) the concentration of the totality of water arises without effort; ཆུ་ཀླུང་སོགས་སུ་ཆུ་མཐོང་བ་ཙམ་ལས་འབད་པ་མ་བྱས་པར་ཟད་པར་ཆུའི་ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་འབྱུང་ངོ་།
• Similarly, by merely looking at a forest fire with billowing smoke, bamboo stirred by the wind, or the leaves in trees and so forth, thinking "The wind is moving in this place." དེ་བཞིན་དུ་ནགས་ཀྱི་མེ་འབར་ཞིང་དུ་བ་འཐུལ་བ་དང་། རླུང་གིས་བསྐྱོད་པའི་འོད་མ་དང་འཁྲི་ཤིང་གི་ལོ་མ་ལ་སོགས་པ་རྣམས་ལ་རླུང་འདི་ནི་གནས་འདིར་རབ་ཏུ་རྒྱུ་བ་ཡིན་ནོ། །ཞེས་ཀུན་ཏུ་ལྟ་བ་ཙམ་དང་།
• Also, flowers, jewels, and clothing that are blue, yellow, red, and white;
  མེ་ཏོག་དང་། ནོར་བུ་དང་གོས་ལ་སོགས་པ་སྔོན་པོ་བཏིང་བ་དང་། དེ་དག་ཉིད་སེར་པོ་དང་། དམར་པོ་དང་། དཀར་པོར་གྱུར་པ་དང་།
• Also, lead, silver, the moon-disc, or seeing spots of light on the ground from moonlight and sunlight among the tree leaves coming in through the window; ཚོན་མོ་སྟེང་དངུལ་ཟླ་བའི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་སོགས་དང་།
  སྐར་ཁུང་ནང་ན་ཤིང་གི་ལོ་མའི་གསེབ་ནས་ཟླ་བ་དང་ཉི་འོད་བྱུང་བས་ས་གཞི་ལ་སྐྱེད་པའི་འོད་ཀྱི་ཐིག་ལེ་ལ་ལྟ་བ་དང་།
• When seeing the window and holes in walls...
  སྐར་ཁུང་དང་རྩིག་པའི་བུ་ག་མཐོང་བ་ན་རིམ་པ་ལྟར་ཟད་པར་མེ་ལ་སོགས་པའི་ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་མངོན་དུ་འགྱུར་རོ།

མ་བྱས་པའི་སྦྱོང་ཚུལ་ལ་གཉིས། དང་པོ་ནི། དམིགས་རྟེན་བྱེད་ཚུལ།
Mode of training for those who have not: In terms of the object-support:

• Properly filling a clean vessel with pure water free from any colours;
  སྔོན་པོ་སོགས་ཀྱི་ཁ་དོག་གི་དབྱེ་བ་དང་བྲལ་བའི་ཆུ་དྲི་མ་མེད་པས་སྣོད་གཙང་མ་ལེགས་པར་བཀང་བ་དང་།
• Lighting a fire by cutting and heaping firewood (together with oil and a wick) in an appropriate place (under a tree or a guesthouse) that is surrounded by walls, with an opening of 1.25 hand-spans: below is the wood, above is the smoke, and in the middle the fire burns. སྣུམ་ཞིང་སྙིང་པོ་དང་བཅས་པའི་ཤིང་དུམ་བུར་གཏུབ་ནས་
  ཤིང་དྲུང་ངམ་མགྲོན་ཁང་ཡང་རུང་སྟེ་རྗེས་སུ་མཐུན་པའི་གནས་སུ་སྤུངས་ཏེ་མཐའ་རྩིག་པས་བསྐོར་བ་ལ་མཐོ་གང་སོར་བཞི་ཙམ་གྱི་བུ་ག་བྱས་ལ་མེ་སྦར་ཏེ།
  འོག་ཏུ་ཤིང་དང་། སྟེང་དུ་དུ་བ་དང་། བར་དུ་མེ་འབར་བར་བྱས་པ་དང་།
• Wind contacting limbs of the body through windows and holes made in the walls;
  ཡན་ལག་གི་ཕྱོགས་གང་དུ་རླུང་གིས་རེག་པར་འགྱུར་བའི་སྐར་ཁུང་དང་རྩིག་པའི་བུ་ག་བྱས་པ་དང་།
• Cloth is stretched out like the skin of a drum, the edges are cut, it is made blue, yellow, red, white, and so forth; རས་རྔ་བོ་ཆེའི་མཐིལ་ལྟར་བརྐྱངས་པ་ལ་ནི་མཐའ་མི་མཐུན་པས་བཅད་དེ། སྔོན་པོ་དང་། སེར་པོ་དང་། དམར་པོ་དང་། དཀར་པོ་སོགས་བྱས་པ་དང་།
• A butter-lamp is lit inside a vase, it is covered and a small hole is made to cast its light to make a disc of light on the wall from a distance;
  བུམ་ནང་དུ་མར་མེ་སྦར་ཏེ་ཁ་བཅད་ཅིང་བུ་ག་མི་ཆེ་བར་བཏོད་ནས། དེའི་འོད་ཀྱིས་རྩིག་ངོས་ལ་ཕོག་པའི་སྣང་བའི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་ཡུན་རིང་བར་བྱས་པ་དང་།
• Looking through a hole of 1.25 hand-spans made through a woollen cloth covering the walls;
  རྩིག་པ་སྣམ་བུ་སོགས་ཀྱིས་གཡོགས་པའི་གནས་སུ་མཐོ་གང་སོར་བཞི་ཙམ་གྱི་བུ་ག་བཏོད་པ་མཐོང་བའི་ཡུལ་དུ་བྱའོ།

གཉིས་པ་ནི། དེ་ལ་ཡིད་གཏོད་པའི་ཚུལ། དམིགས་རྟེན་དེ་དག་མཐོང་བའི་གནས་ཡིད་དང་མཐུན་པར་སྟན་བདེ་བ་ལ་འདུག་སྟེ།
ས་ས་ཆུ་ཆུ་ཞེས་སོགས་བཅུ་པོ་སོ་སོའི་མིང་ཙམ་ལ་དམིགས་ནས་ཡང་ཡང་གོམས་པར་བྱའོ།
In terms of focusing the mind: Sitting on comfortable seat in a place where one perceives these object-supports and familiarising again and again through observing the individual names of the ten (earth for earth, water for water, etc.)

Signs of non-accomplishment: མ་གྲུབ་པའི་མཚན་མའོ།

• Movement of the water, such as being mixed with bubbles or foam;
  ལྦུ་བ་དང་ཆུ་བུར་འདྲེས་པའི་ཆུ་གཡོ་བའི་རྣམ་པ་ཅན་དང་།
• The fire repeatedly going out and the remainder of some wood, ashes, or embers;
  མེ་ཆད་ཅིང་ཆད་ཅིང་ལྟུང་བ་དང་། འགལ་དུམ་དང་། ཐལ་བ་དང་། སོལ་བ་རྣམས་ལ་ཅུང་ཟད་གནས་པ་དང་།
• Remainder of steam after (the wind) hitting the boiled milk;
  འོ་མ་བསྐོལ་བ་ཕོག་མ་ཐག་པའི་རླངས་པ་འཐུལ་བ་ལྟ་བུར་གནས་པ་དང་།
• Blue flower being without a blossom and stalk, similarly for yellow etc.;
  མེ་ཏོག་སྔོན་པོ་གེ་སར་དང་སྡོང་བུ་མེད་པ་ལྟ་བུ་སྟེ། སེར་པོ་སོགས་གསུམ་ལའང་དེ་བཞིན་ཏེ།
• The disc of light arising on the ground or walls only illuminating some things
  སའམ་རྩིག་པར་སྐྱེས་པའི་འོད་ཀྱི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་ལྟར་དངོས་པོ་འགའ་ཞིག་ཁོ་ན་གསལ་བ་དང་།
• An opening in the walls etc.
  རྩིག་མཐའ་ལ་སོགས་པའི་བུ་ག

ལྟར་སྣང་ལ་བློས་སྐྱེད་ཀྱང་མི་འཕེལ་བ་ལྟར་སྣང་བ་རྣམས།
i.e. false appearances generated by the mind but that do not increase.

Signs of accomplishment: གྲུབ་པའི་མཚན་མ།

• Appearances that are unwavering, like a jewel-fan and jewel-mirror abiding in the sky
  ནམ་མཁའ་ལ་གནས་པའི་ནོར་བུའི་རླུང་གཡབ་དང་། ནོར་བུའི་རང་བཞིན་གྱི་མེ་ལོང་གི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་ལྟ་བུ་མི་གཡོ་བའི་རྣམ་པ་ཅན་དུ་སྣང་བ་དང་།
• Perceived as abiding without wavering like the abiding or remaining of a moon-disc in the sky, red sphere, golden fan, and its base ནམ་མཁའ་ལ་གནས་པའི་ཟླ་བའི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་དམར་པོ་ཟླུམ་པོ་དང་། གསེར་གྱི་རླུང་གཡབ་དང་།
  དེའི་ཀ་བ་ལྟ་བུར་གནས་པ་དང་། འདུག་པ་ལྟར་མི་གཡོ་བར་གནས་པ་མཐོང་བ་དང་།
• Appearing in the sky like a jewel-fan, surpassing the sphere of the totalities in terms of object-support; apply to other three;
  དམིགས་རྟེན་ཟད་པར་གྱི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་ལས་འཕགས་ནས་ནོར་བུའི་རླུང་གཡབ་ལྟ་བུ་ནམ་མཁའ་ལ་སྣང་སྟེ་གཞན་གསུམ་ལའང་དེ་ལྟར་དང་།
• Illuminating all, like a dense clear illumination; like the sphere of the sky;
  སྣང་བའི་ཚོགས་སྟུག་པོ་རབ་ཏུ་དང་བ་དང་འདྲ་བར་ཐམས་ཅད་ལ་གསལ་བ་དང་། ནམ་མཁའི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་ལྟ་བུར་གྱུར་ནས་གནས་ཤིང་

བློས་སྐྱེད་ན་ནི་འཕེལ་བར་སྣང་བ་རྣམས་ཟད་པར་ཆུ་ལ་སོགས་པ་དགུའི་གྲུབ་པའི་མཚན་མའོ།
i.e. appearances generated by the mind and increasing.

ས་ལ་སྔར་སྦྱངས་པས་འགྲུབ་ཚུལ་དང་། མ་སྦྱངས་པས་སྦྱོང་བའི་དམིགས་རྟེན་དང་། གྲུབ་མ་གྲུབ་ཀྱི་མཚན་མ་མ་གསུངས་པའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ནི་དཔྱད་དགོས་པར་སྣང་ངོ་།
It should be analysed why these are not presented wrt the totality of earth.

Functions of the totalities: ཟད་པར་ཆུ་ལ་སོགས་པའི་བྱེད་ལས་ནི།

• Transforming into one, transforming into many གཅིག་ཏུ་གྱུར་ནས་མང་པོར་གྱུར་པ་དང་།
• Emanating ground upon the sky and water, to walk there and so forth
  ནམ་མཁའ་དང་ཆུ་ལ་སར་སྤྲུལ་ནས་རྐང་པས་འགྲོ་བ་སོགས་བྱེད་པ་དང་།
• Burrowing into the earth and coming out again ས་ལ་བྱིའུ་འཛུལ་བྱེད་ཅིང་སྟེང་དུ་འབྱུང་བ་དང་།
• Making rain fall ཆུའི་ཆར་འབེབས་པ་དང་།
• Emanating the earth and mountains etc. into rivers and oceans ས་དང་རི་བོ་སོགས་ཆུ་བོ་དང་། རྒྱ་མཚོར་སྤྲུལ་པ་དང་།
• Smoking, burning, making rain fall using embers, burning whatever one wishes
  དུ་བ་འཐུལ་ཞིང་མེ་འབར་བ་དང་མེ་མདག་གིས་ཆར་འབེབས་པ་དང་གང་འདོད་པ་དེ་སྲེག་པ་དང་།
• When passed beyond sorrow, burning one's body མྱ་ངན་ལས་འདའ་བ་ན་ལུས་མེས་སྲེག་པ་དང་།
• Illuminating objects with the Divine Eye ལྷའི་མིག་གིས་ཡུལ་སྣང་བར་བྱེད་པ་དང་།
• Moving fast like the wind, making rain fall with wind རླུང་ལྟར་མགྱོགས་པར་འགྲོ་ཞིང་རླུང་གི་ཆར་འབེབ་པ་དང་།
• Emanating blue forms and making darkness etc. གཟུགས་སྔོན་པོར་སྤྲུལ་ཞིང་མུན་པར་བྱེད་པ་སོགས་དང་།
• Emanating yellow forms and transforming things into gold གཟུགས་སེར་པོར་སྤྲུལ་ཞིང་གསེར་དུ་བསྒྱུར་བ་དང་།
• Emanating red forms etc. གཟུགས་དམར་པོར་སྤྲུལ་བ་སོགས་དང་།
• Emanating white forms, keeping away sleepiness, eliminating darkness
  གཟུགས་དཀར་པོར་སྤྲུལ་ཞིང་གཉིད་རྨུགས་རིང་དུ་བྱེད། མུན་པ་འཇིག་པར་བྱེད།
• With the Divine Eye, illuminating objects, clarifying forms, and keeping away sleepiness etc. and separating from obscurations
  ལྷའི་མིག་གིས་ཡུལ་སྣང་བར་བྱེད་པ་དང་། གཟུགས་གསལ་བ་དང་། གཉིད་རྨུགས་རིང་དུ་བྱེད་པ་སོགས་དང་བསྒྲིབས་པ་རྣམས་འབྱེད་ཅིང་།
• Emanating space in the earth and between mountains and engaging in activities
  ས་དང་རི་བོ་སོགས་ཀྱི་ནང་ནས་ནམ་མཁར་སྤྲུལ་ཞིང་སྤྱོད་ལམ་བྱེད་པ་དང་།
• Going straight through walls etc. རྩིག་པ་སོགས་ལ་ཐད་ཀར་འགྲོ་བར་བྱེད་པ་རྣམས།

གཟུགས་དང་རེག་བྱ་གཉིས་ལ་ཟད་པར་བཞག་ནས་གཟུགས་ཅན་གཞན་བརྒྱད་ལ་ཟད་པར་མི་འཇོག་པའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ཅི་ཡིན་ཞེ་ན། དེའི་རྒྱུ་མཚན་ཡོད་དེ།
Reason for positing the totalities only wrt form and object of touch and not the other eight:

• Form and object of touch are possessed by both self and other in all realms where sentient beings possess form, whereas the five sense-powers are not possessed in others' continua;
  གཟུགས་རེག་གཉིས་ནི་བདག་གཞན་གཉིས་ཀ་དང་། གཟུགས་ཅན་གྱི་སེམས་ཅན་གྱི་ཁམས་ཐམས་ཅད་ན་ཡོད་པ་དང་། དབང་པོ་ལྔ་གཞན་རྒྱུད་ལ་མེད་པ་དང་།
• Smell and taste do not exist in the Form realm དྲི་རོ་གཉིས་གཟུགས་ཁམས་ན་མེད་པས་མ་བཞག་ཅིང་།
• Sound does not have a continuum of similar type སྒྲ་ལ་རིགས་འདྲའི་རྒྱུན་མེད་པས་མ་བཞག་པའི་ཕྱིར་རོ།

གཟུགས་མེད་པ་ན་ནི་ནམ་མཁའ་ཐམས་ཅད་དུ་འགྲོ་བ་དང་། རྣམ་ཤེས་ཀྱང་ཡུལ་ཟད་པར་གྱི་སྤྱོད་ཡུལ་ཅན་ཡིན་པས་བཞག་གོ།
In the Formless Realm: Due to going everywhere in space and possessing the object of the consciousness' exhaustion of objects, they are also posited .

གཟུགས་མེད་ཕྱི་མ་གཉིས་ལ་མི་བཞག་སྟེ། གསུམ་པས་ནི་དམིགས་པ་གཅོད། བཞི་པས་སེམས་ནང་དུ་བསྡུས་པས་མི་གསལ་བའི་ཕྱིར།
Not posited for the last two Formless Realms because the third has eliminated objects of observation and the fourth is not clear due to the mind being gathered inwardly.
