Three final vehicles
སེམས་ཙམ་པ་རྣམས་ན་རེ། མཐར་ཐུག་ཐེག་པ་གསུམ་དུ་གྲུབ་པར་གསུངས་པ་སྒྲ་ཇི་བཞིན་པ་ཡིན་ཏེ། མཐར་ཐུག་ཐེག་པ་གསུམ་དུ་གྲུབ་པའི་ཕྱིར་ཏེ།
དེ་ལྟར་ལུང་གིས་ཀྱང་གྲུབ། རིགས་པས་ཀྱང་གྲུབ་པའི་ཕྱིར།
The Cittamatrins assert: Statements establishing three final vehicles are literal because there are three final vehicles; because this is established through both scriptures and reasoning.
Scriptures:
མདོ་སྡེ་དགོངས་འགྲེལ་ལས། ཉན་ཐོས་ཀྱི་རིགས་ཀྱི་གང་ཟག་ཞི་བ་བགྲོད་པ་གཅིག་པུ་ནི་སངས་རྒྱས་ཐམས་ཅད་བརྩོན་པ་དང་ལྡན་པར་གྱུར་ཀྱང་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་
སྙིང་པོ་ལ་བཞག་སྟེ། བླ་མེད་རྫོགས་བྱང་ཐོབ་པར་བྱར་མི་ནུས་སོ། །དེ་ཅིའི་ཕྱིར་ཞེ་ན། འདི་ལྟར་དེ་ནི་སྙིང་རྗེ་ཤིན་ཏུ་ཆུང་བ་དང༌།
སྡུག་བསྔལ་གྱིས་ཤིན་ཏུ་འཇིགས་པའི་ཕྱིར་དང༌། རང་བཞིན་གྱི་རིགས་དམན་པ་ཁོ་ན་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར་རོ། །ཞེས་དང༌།
3ཉན་ཐོས་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཏུ་ཡོངས་སུ་གྱུར་པ་གང་ཡིན་པ་དེ་ནི། ངས་རྣམ་གྲངས་ཀྱི་བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའ་ཡིན་པར་བསྟན་ཏེ། འདི་ལྟར་དེ་ནི་ཉོན་མོངས་པའི་སྒྲིབ་པ་ལས་རྣམ་པར་གྲོལ་ནས་དེ་བཞིན་གཤེགས་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ནས་ཤེས་བྱའི་སྒྲིབ་པ་ལས་སེམས་ཤིན་ཏུ་རྣམ་པར་གྲོལ་བར་བྱེད་པའི་ཕྱིར། ཞེས་གསུངས།
The Sutra Unravelling the Thought says:
Persons of the Hearer lineage who proceed to peace alone: despite the efforts of all the Buddhas to place them in the essence of enlightenment, they are not able to attain unsurpassable complete enlightenment. Why is that? It is due to such [persons] having very little compassion and a great fear of suffering; and due to their natural lineage being just inferior.
And:
Those Hearers who have thoroughly transformed towards enlightenment I have indicated as being enumerated Bodhisattvas because such [persons], having been liberated from the afflictive obscurations, while suffering will have their mind thoroughly liberated the knowledge obscurations by the Tathāgatas.

Reasoning:
གྲུབ་སྟེ། སེམས་ཅན་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱི་རྒྱུད་ཀྱི་ཐེག་པ་སོ་སོའི་ལམ་དུ་དཀྲིར་རུང་བའི་ཟག་མེད་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཀྱི་ས་བོན་དོན་དམ་པར་རིགས་སོ་སོར་ངེས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
གཞན་དབང་དང་ཡོངས་གྲུབ་བདེན་པར་གྲུབ་པའི་ཕྱིར་དང་། རིགས་ཆད་ཀྱི་སེམས་ཅན་ཡང་ཡོད་པའི་ཕྱིར་དང༌།
ལྷག་མེད་མྱང་འདས་ལ་གནས་པའི་དགྲ་བཅོམ་པ་ཡང་སྲིད་དུ་སྐྱེ་བ་ལེན་པ་མེད་པའི་ཕྱིར་ཏེ། ལྷག་མེད་མྱང་འདས་ཀྱི་ཚེ་རིག་པ་རྒྱུན་ཆད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
That is established because the seed of uncontaminated exalted wisdom (see Cittamatra) in the continuum of all sentient beings that makes them suitable to be led along the paths of their individual vehicles are ascertained as individual lineages ultimately.
This is because:
- Other-powered and thoroughly-established natures are truly established,
- Sentient beings with a severed lineage exist, and
- Arhats abiding in Nirvana without remainder cannot take another rebirth; because at the time of [attaining] Nirvana without remainder the mental continuum is severed.
Scriptures indicating one final vehicle are of interpretative meaning because there is:
- Intention: དེའི་དགོངས་གཞི་ཡོད་དེ།
- The vehicle traversed: the dharmadhātu of the Aryas of all three vehicles being similar in lacking a different nature, like space;
བགྲོད་བྱའི་ཐེག་པ། ཐེག་པ་གསུམ་གའི་འཕགས་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་ཆོས་དབྱིངས་ནམ་མཁའ་ལྟར་ངོ་བོ་ཐ་དད་པ་མེད་པར་མཚུངས་པ་དང༌། - The vehicle that traverses: the three Aryas are similar in realising selflessness;
བགྲོད་པ་པོའི་ཐེག་པ་འཕགས་པའི་གང་ཟག་གསུམ་བདག་མེད་རྟོགས་པར་མཚུངས་པ་དང༌། - What the vehicle is traversing to: being the same path to complete liberation, i.e. the resultant abandonment of suffering and origins;
གང་གི་ཆེད་དུ་བགྲོད་པའི་ཐེག་པ་སྡུག་ཀུན་སྤངས་པའི་འབྲས་བུ་རྣམ་གྲོལ་ལམ་མཚུངས་པ་དང༌། - Some indefinite-lineage Hearers enter the Mahayana path and attain Buddhahood, their two different lineages are similar in being different lineages that enter a single path;
ཉན་ཐོས་སུ་རིགས་མ་ངེས་པའི་ཉན་ཐོས་ཁ་ཅིག་ཐེག་ཆེན་ལམ་དུ་ཞུགས་ནས་སངས་རྒྱས་ཐོབ་པར་འགྱུར་བའི་རིགས་ཐ་དད་པ་གཉིས་
ལམ་གཅིག་ཏུ་ཞུགས་པའི་རིགས་ཐ་དད་པར་མཚུངས་པ་དང༌། - Some bodhisattvas who are indefinite in the Hearer-lineage temporarily engage in the bodhisattva practices, but then abandon those and enter the Hearer path; when they attain Nirvana, through the power of the Buddhas, they briefly think “Since I previously practiced the bodhisattva practices, I will attain enlightenment” similar to how Tathāgatas think “I attained enlightenment through my previous practice of the bodhisattva practices.”
ཉན་ཐོས་སུ་རིགས་མ་ངེས་པའི་བྱང་སེམས་འགའ་ཞིག་རེ་ཞིག་བྱང་སེམས་ཀྱི་སྤྱོད་པ་སྤྱད་ནས། དེ་བཏང་ནས་ཉན་ཐོས་ལམ་དུ་ཞུགས་ཏེ་དེས་
མྱང་འདས་ཐོབ་པ་ན་དེ་བཞིན་གཤེགས་པས་སྔོན་བདག་གིས་བྱང་སེམས་ཀྱི་སྤྱོད་པ་སྤྱད་པས་སངས་རྒྱས་སོ་སྙམ་དུ་དགོངས་པ་དེ་བཞིན་དུ།
དེ་ལ་ཡང་སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱི་མཐུས་བདག་སྔོན་བྱང་སེམས་ཀྱི་སྤྱོད་པ་སྤྱད་པས་འཚང་རྒྱ་བར་འགྱུར་རོ་སྙམ་པའི་བསམ་པ་མཚུངས་པ་ཐང་གཅིག་ཙམ་རྙེད་པས་བསམ་པ་གཉིས་ཐོབ་པ་དང༌། - Some emanated Hearers display passing beyond sorrow many times for the benefit of disciples;
སྤྲུལ་པའི་ཉན་ཐོས་འགའ་ཞིག་གདུལ་བྱའི་དོན་དུ་མྱ་ངན་ལས་འདའ་ཚུལ་ལན་དུ་མར་བསྟན་པ་དང༌། - The vehicle of final abandonment and realisation is definite as one.
སྤངས་རྟོགས་མཐར་ཕྱིན་པའི་ཐེག་པ་གཅིག་ཏུ་ངེས་པ་སྟེ་བདུན་ལ་དགོངས་ནས་གསུངས་པའི་ཕྱིར།
- The vehicle traversed: the dharmadhātu of the Aryas of all three vehicles being similar in lacking a different nature, like space;
- Purpose: དེ་ལྟར་གསུངས་པ་ལ་དགོས་པ་ཡོད་དེ།
- To lead some who are indefinite in the Hinayana lineage to the Mahayana; and also
ཉན་ཐོས་ཀྱི་རིགས་མ་ངེས་པ་ཁ་ཅིག་དག་ནི་ཐེག་ཆེན་དུ་ཁ་དྲངས་པའི་ཕྱིར་དང་། - To keep Bodhisattvas indefinite in the Mahayana lineage from degenerating from complete enlightenment. གཞན་དག་ཐེག་ཆེན་དུ་རིགས་མ་ངེས་པའི་བྱང་སེམས་རྫོགས་བྱང་ལས་མི་ཉམས་པར་བཟུང་བའི་དགོས་པ་ཡོད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
- To lead some who are indefinite in the Hinayana lineage to the Mahayana; and also
- There is harm to the actual meaning because other-powered natures and thoroughly-established natures are truly established and because it is refuted by the previous scriptures.
དངོས་ལ་གནོད་བྱེད་ཡོད་དེ། གཞན་དབང་དང་ཡོངས་གྲུབ་བདེན་པར་གྲུབ་པའི་ཕྱིར་དང༌། སྔར་གྱི་ལུང་དེ་དག་གིས་གནོད་པའི་ཕྱིར།
