ཁྱད་པར་གསུམ་ལྡན་གྱི་ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་དགེ་བའི་བཤེས་གཉེན་དུ་དམིགས་པ། འདིར་དངོས་སུ་བསྟན་པའི་ཡོངས་འཛིན་གྱི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition: That observed as a Mahayana virtuous spiritual friend possessing the three attributes.

Three attributes:

1. Skilful means: One skilled in the means of making the minds of the disciples undaunted, unafraid, and fearless with respect emptiness; the antidotes to: being daunted by, continually afraid of, and being fearful in terms of reinforcing that fear of the dharma of suchness and so forth.
   ཐབས་མཁས་པའི་ཁྱད་པར། དེ་ཁོ་ན་ཉིད་ལ་སོགས་པའི་ཆོས་ལ་འཇིགས་པའི་དངང་བ་དང། དེ་དག་ལ་རྒྱུན་དུ་འཇིགས་པའི་སྐྲག་པ་དང།
   སྐྲག་པ་དེ་ཉིད་ངེས་པར་གྱུར་བའི་ཀུན་ཏུ་སྐྲག་པ་སྟེ་དེ་དག་གི་གཉེན་པོར་གདུལ་བྱའི་སེམས་སྟོང་པ་ཉིད་ལ་མི་འགོང་ཞིང་མི་སྐྲག་པ་དང།
   ཀུན་ཏུ་མི་སྐྲག་པར་བྱེད་པའི་ཐབས་མཁས་པ་དང།
2. Teaching dharma: One who teaches all phenomena as being without entity, exactly in accordance with the attitudes of the disciples; just like gradually teaching the king’s beautiful wife about death.
   ཆོས་སྟོན་པའི་ཁྱད་པར། རྒྱལ་པོའི་བཙུན་མོ་སྡུག་པ་ཤི་བ་ལ་རིམ་གྱིས་བརྡ་སྤྲོད་པ་དང་འདྲ་བར་གདུལ་བྱའི་བསམ་པ་ཇི་ལྟ་བ་བཞིན་དུ་
   ཆོས་ཐམས་ཅད་ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་མེད་པ་ལ་སོགས་པར་སྟོན་པ།
3. Abandoning discordant conditions: One who does not possess, i.e. has left behind, phenomena such as miserliness and so forth that are of the discordant class to the Mahayana path, i.e. the six perfections, and sets disciples in the results of higher rebirth and definite goodness.
   འགལ་རྐྱེན་སྤོང་བའི་ཁྱད་པར། ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་ལམ་ཕར་ཕྱིན་དྲུག་གི་མི་མཐུན་ཕྱོགས་ཀྱི་ཆོས་སེར་སྣ་སོགས་བོར་བ་སྟེ་མི་ལྡན་པར་གདུལ་བྱ་བདེ་འགྲོ་དང་ངེས་ལེགས་ཀྱི་འབྲས་བུ་ལ་འགོད་པར་བྱེད་པ།

སྤྱིར་ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་དགེ་བའི་བཤེས་གཉེན་དེ་ལ་ཡོན་ཏན་བཅུ་དང་ལྡན་པ་ཞིག་དགོས་ཏེ།
In general, the Mahayana spiritual friend should possess ten qualities:

1. Subdued faculties due to the higher training in ethics ལྷག་པ་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་ཀྱི་བསླབ་པས་དབང་པོ་དུལ་བ།
2. A thoroughly pacified mind due to the training in concentration ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་གྱི་བསླབ་པས་སེམས་རབ་ཏུ་ཞི་བ།
3. A completely pacified mind due to the training in wisdom ཤེས་རབ་ཀྱི་བསླབ་པས་སེམས་ཉེ་བར་ཞི་བ།
4. Superior qualities to the student སློབ་མ་དེ་ལས་ཡོན་ཏན་ལྷག་པ།
5. Diligence in acting for others, such as teaching dharma ཆོས་སྟོན་པ་སོགས་གཞན་གྱི་བྱ་བ་ལ་བརྩོན་པ།
6. Wealth in scholarly qualities མང་དུ་ཐོས་པའི་ལུང་གི་ཡོན་ཏན་གྱིས་ཕྱུག་པ།
7. Possessing the wisdom thoroughly realising suchness of the mode of abidance
   གནས་ལུགས་ཀྱི་དེ་ཉིད་རབ་ཏུ་རྟོགས་པའི་ཤེས་རབ་དང་ལྡན་པ།
8. Skill in explaining the dharma to disciples གདུལ་བྱ་ལ་ཆོས་སྨྲ་བ་ལ་མཁས་པ།
9. Possessing method: compassion that is the nature of love ཐབས་བརྩེ་བའི་བདག་ཉིད་སྙིང་རྗེ་དང་ལྡན་པ།
10. Possessing the quality of patience, having abandoned any weariness for the hardships of working for others, such as explaining the dharma.
    ཆོས་བཤད་པ་སོགས་གཞན་གྱི་དཀའ་སྤྱད་ལ་སྐྱོ་ངལ་སྤངས་པ་སྟེ་བཟོད་པའི་ཡོན་ཏན་དང་ལྡན་པ།

མདོ་སྡེའི་རྒྱན་ལས། བཤེས་གཉེན་དུལ་བ་ཞི་བ་ཉེར་ཞི་བ། །ཡོན་ཏན་ལྷག་པ་བརྩོན་བཅས་ལུང་གིས་ཕྱུག
དེ་ཉིད་རབ་ཏུ་རྟོགས་ལ་སྨྲ་མཁས་ལྡན། །བརྩེ་བའི་བདག་ཉིད་སྐྱོ་ངལ་སྤངས་ལ་བསྟེན།
Ornament for Mahayana Sutras says:
A spiritual friend who is subdued, pacified, completely pacified,
Superior qualities, diligent, and rich in scriptures,
Thoroughly realised suchness and skilled in explaining,
The nature of love, and has abandoned weariness – rely on [such a one].

Division:

1. Inner tutor ནང་གི་ཡོངས་འཛིན།
   i.e. Special method and wisdom in the continuum of the Bodhisattva on the path of preparation - because of being an exalted knower in their continuum that prevents falling into either extreme of existence and peace. སྲིད་ཞི་གང་རུང་གི་མཐར་ལྟུང་བ་འགོག་བྱེད་ཀྱི་དེའི་མཁྱེན་པ།
2. Outer tutor ཕྱིའི་ཡོངས་འཛིན།
   i.e. the Supreme Emanation Body that is their empowering condition - because of being the virtuous spiritual friend that is the empowering condition teaching them the complete dharma of method and wisdom. དེ་ལ་ཐབས་ཤེས་ཀྱི་ཆོས་རྫོགས་པར་སྟོན་པའི་བདག་རྐྱེན་དུ་གྱུར་པའི་དགེ་བའི་བཤེས་གཉེན་ཡིན་པ།

བློ་གཟུ་བོར་གནས་པ་སོགས་ཡོན་ཏན་གསུམ་ལྡན་གྱི་སྒོ་ནས་རང་གི་ཡོངས་འཛིན་དམ་པ་བསྟེན་པར་ཁས་ལེན་པའི་གང་ཟག་ཏུ་དམིགས་པ།
སྟེན་བྱེད་སློབ་མའི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of the student who relies: That observed as a person who promises to rely upon their holy tutor by way of possessing the three qualities of an impartial mind and so forth.

ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་གདམས་ངག་ཉན་པའི་ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་གདུལ་བྱ་དེ་ཡང་ཡོན་ཏན་གསུམ་དང་ལྡན་པ་ཞིག་དགོས་ཏེ།
A Mahayana disciple who listens to Mahayana instructions should also be one possessing three qualities:

1. An impartial mind, free from deception and so forth གཡོ་སྒྱུ་སོགས་དང་བྲལ་བའི་བློ་གཟུ་བོར་གནས་པ།
2. Intelligence that differentiates between good and bad ལེགས་ཉེས་ཀྱི་རྣམ་གཞག་སོ་སོར་འབྱེད་པའི་བློ་གྲོས་དང་ལྡན་པ།
3. Belief in and striving for the Mahayana dharma ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་ཆོས་ལ་མོས་ཞིང་དོན་དུ་གཉེར་བ།

བཞི་བརྒྱ་པ་ལས། གཟུར་གནས་བློ་ལྡན་དོན་གཉེར་པ། ཉན་པོ་སྣོད་ཅེས་བྱ་བར་བརྗོད།
Four Hundred Verses says:
One who is impartial, intelligent, and diligent
Is to be called a [suitable] vessel for listening.

Moreover, in this context, a disciple who listens to the Perfection of Wisdom sutras should:

1. Engage in superior activities, such as making offering to the Buddhas
   སྔོན་སངས་རྒྱས་རྣམས་ལ་མཆོད་པ་སོགས་ལྷག་པར་བྱ་བ་བྱས་པ།
2. Produce vast roots of virtues in relation to them དེ་རྣམས་ལ་དགེ་བའི་རྩ་བ་རྒྱ་ཆེན་པོ་བསྐྲུན་པ།
3. Not separate from the protector, i.e. the Mahayana virtuous spiritual friend
   ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་དགེ་བའི་བཤེས་གཉེན་གྱི་མགོན་དང་མ་བྲལ་བ།
