Twelve Deeds

མཆོག་གི་སྤྲུལ་སྐུའི་མཛད་པའི་གཙོ་བོ་རྣམས་བསྡུ་ན་བཅུ་གཉིས་སུ་འདུ།
When the main activities of the Supreme Emanation Body are subsumed, they are included within twelve:

1. Taking birth - our Teacher who was previously Māṇava, transferred from that life and took birth in Tushita as Śvetaketu བདག་ཅག་གི་སྟོན་པ་འདི་སྔོན་བྲམ་ཟེའི་ཁྱེའུ་བླ་མར་གྱུར་པ་དེ་ཚེ་འཕོས་ནས་དགའ་ལྡན་དུ་དམ་པ་ཏོག་དཀར་དུ་སྐྱེ་བ་བཞེས་པ་ནི་
   མཛད་པ་དང་པོ་སྐྱེ་བ་མངོན་པར་སྐྱེ་བའི་མཛད་པ་དང་།
   
   
2. Descent from Tushita - coming to this world from Tushita in the form of a whitish-grey elephant
   དགའ་ལྡན་ནས་གླང་པོ་ཆེ་ཐལ་དཀར་གྱི་གཟུགས་ཀྱིས་འཛམ་བུའི་གླིང་དུ་བྱོན་པ་ནི་མཛད་པ་གཉིས་པ་དགའ་ལྡན་ནས་འཕོ་བའི་མཛད་པ་དང་།
   
   
3. Entering the womb - displaying the aspect of entering from the right-side when his mother was in Sojong and remaining in the womb for ten months འཛམ་བུའི་གླིང་དུ་ཡུམ་གསོ་སྦྱོང་ལ་གནས་པའི་ཚེ་གློ་གཡས་པ་ནས་ཞུགས་ཏེ་
   མངལ་དུ་ཟླ་བ་བཅུ་རྫོགས་པར་བཞུགས་པའི་ཚུལ་བསྟན་པ་ནི་མཛད་པ་གསུམ་པ་ལྷུམས་སུ་ཞུགས་པའི་མཛད་པ་དང་།
   
   
4. Being born - in the auspicious grove in Lumbini, being born from his mother's right-side; wrapped in a Varanasi cloth and washed and so forth by Brahma and Indra དེ་ནས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལུམྦིའི་ཚལ་དུ་ཡུམ་གྱི་གློ་གཡས་པ་ནས་
   བལྟམས་ཏེ་ལྷ་ཚངས་པ་དང་བརྒྱ་བྱིན་གྱིས་ཀ་ཤི་ཀའི་རས་ཀྱི་སྟེང་དུ་བླངས་ནས་སྐུ་ཁྲུས་གསོལ་བ་སོགས་མཛད་པ་བཞི་པ་བལྟམས་པའི་མཛད་པ་དང་།
   
   
5. Skill in the arts - becoming skilled in all skills of the arts, such as performance and so forth
   དེ་ནས་སྒྱུ་རྩལ་སོགས་བཟོ་པའི་རིག་བྱེད་ཀྱི་གནས་མཐའ་དག་ལ་མཁས་པར་བྱས་པ་ནི་མཛད་པ་ལྔ་པ་བཟོ་པའི་གནས་ལ་མཁས་པའི་མཛད་པ་དང་།
   
   
6. Enjoyment with consorts - displaying the aspect of marrying Gopā and playfully frolicking with consorts
   དེ་ནས་ས་འཚོ་མ་ཁབ་ཏུ་བཞེས་ཏེ་བཙུན་མོ་རྣམས་དང་རྩེ་དགས་རོལ་པའི་ཚུལ་བསྟན་པ་ནི་མཛད་པ་དྲུག་པ་བཙུན་མོའི་འཁོར་དགྱེས་རོལ་པའི་མཛད་པ་དང་།
   
   
7. Renunciation - ordaining himself in front of a pure offering-support (stupa)
   དེ་ནས་མཆོད་རྟེན་རྣམ་དག་གི་དྲུང་དུ་རང་ཉིད་ཀྱིས་རབ་ཏུ་བྱུང་བར་མཛད་པ་ནི་མཛད་པ་བདུན་པ་ངེས་པར་འབྱུང་བའི་མཛད་པ་དང་།
   
   
8. Practicing asceticism - displaying the aspect of practicing asceticism by the Nairanjana river, surviving on four sesame seeds, four juniper seeds, and six ?? seeds དེ་ནས་ཆུ་བོ་ནེ་རཉྫ་ནའི་འགྲམ་དུ་ཏིལ་འབྲུ་བཞི། རྒྱ་ཤུག་འབྲུ་བཞི།
   འབྲས་འབྲུ་དྲུག་རྣམས་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་ལོ་དྲུག་དཀའ་སྤྱད་མཛད་པའི་ཚུལ་བསྟན་པ་ནི་མཛད་པ་བརྒྱད་པ་དཀའ་བ་སྤྱད་པའི་མཛད་པ་དང་།
   
   
9. Proceeding to the Bodhi tree and defeating the maras - in order to display the aspect of complete awakening into perfect and complete enlightenment, going to the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya (Magadha), defeating the maras (such as the God of Desire) at dusk, and entering meditative equipoise at midnight.
   དེ་ནས་བྱང་ཆུབ་སྙིང་པོ་སྟེ་ཡང་དག་པར་རྫོགས་པའི་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཏུ་མངོན་པར་རྫོགས་པར་འཚང་རྒྱ་བའི་ཚུལ་བསྟན་པའི་ཕྱིར་དུ་མ་ག་ཏ་རྡོ་རྗེ་གདན་གྱི་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་ཤིང་དྲུང་དུ་གཤེགས་ནས་སྲོད་ལ་དགའ་རབ་དབང་ཕྱུག་ལ་སོགས་པའི་བདུད་བཅོམ། གུང་ལ་མཉམ་པར་བཞག་པར་མཛད་པ་ནི་མཛད་པ་དགུ་པ་བྱང་ཆུབ་
   སྙིང་པོར་གཤེགས་ཏེ་བདུད་སྡེ་བཅོམ་པའི་མཛད་པ་དང་། འདྲེན་ཚུལ་སྔ་མ་ལྟར་ན་འདི་སོ་སོར་གཉིས་སུ་འདྲེན་ནོ།
   The second listing system counts this as two separate deeds.
   
   
10. Complete enlightenment - displaying the aspect of attaining perfect complete enlightenment at dawn
    དེ་ནས་ཐོ་རངས་ཀྱི་ཆ་ལ་མངོན་པར་རྫོགས་པར་འཚང་རྒྱ་བའི་ཚུལ་བསྟན་པ་ནི་མཛད་པ་བཅུ་པ་རྫོགས་པར་བྱང་ཆུབ་པའི་མཛད་པ་དང་།
    
    
11. Turning the Wheel of Dharma - teaching Dharma to disciples in Varanasi and so forth
    དེ་ནས་ཡུལ་ཝཱ་ར་ཎཱ་སི་སོགས་སུ་གདུལ་བྱ་ལ་ཆོས་གསུངས་པ་ནི་མཛད་པ་བཅུ་གཅིག་པ་ཆོས་འཁོར་བསྐོར་བའི་མཛད་པ་དང་།
    
    
12. Passing beyond sorrow - in Kushalanagar, displaying the aspect of passing beyond sorrow in order for sentient beings grasping at permanence to generate disillusionment and strive in the path
    དེ་ནས་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་རྩྭ་མཆོག་ཏུ་སེམས་ཅན་རྟག་འཛིན་ཅན་རྣམས་སྐྱོ་བ་བསྐྱེད་དེ་ལམ་ལ་བརྩོན་པར་བྱ་བའི་ཕྱིར་དུ་མྱ་ངན་ལས་འདའ་ཚུལ་བསྟན་པ་ནི་
    མཛད་པ་བཅུ་གཉིས་པ་མྱ་ངན་ལས་འདས་པའི་མཛད་པ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།

Second listing:

1. Descent from Tushita དགའ་ལྡན་ནས་འཕོ་བའི་མཛད་པ།
2. Entering the mother's womb ཡུམ་གྱི་ལྷུམས་སུ་ཞུགས་པའི་མཛད་པ།
3. Being born སྐུ་བལྟམས་པའི་མཛད་པ།
4. Displaying mastery of the arts བཟོའི་གནས་ལ་མཁས་པར་སྟོན་པའི་མཛད་པ།
5. Frolicking with his retinue of consorts བཙུན་མོའི་འཁོར་དུ་དགྱེས་པར་རོལ་པའི་མཛད་པ།
6. Ordination རབ་ཏུ་བྱུང་བའི་མཛད་པ།
7. Practicing asceticism དཀའ་བ་སྤྱད་པའི་མཛད་པ།
8. Sitting under the Bodhi tree བྱང་ཆུབ་ཤིང་དྲུང་དུ་བཞུགས་པའི་མཛད་པ།
9. Defeating the maras བདུད་བཅོམ་པའི་མཛད་པ།
10. Enlightenment སངས་རྒྱས་པའི་མཛད་པ།
11. Turning the Wheel of Dharma ཆོས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོ་བསྐོར་བའི་མཛད་པ།
12. Passing beyond sorrow སྐུ་མྱ་ངན་ལས་འདས་པའི་མཛད་པ།

འདི་ལ་ཡང་མདོ་བསྟན་བཅོས་རྣམས་སུ་འདྲེན་ཚུལ་དུ་མ་ཞིག་བྱུང་སྟེ།
There are different ways of listing these in the sutras and treatises:

• In some sutras, "restoring the holy Dharma that has declined" is counted as one of them; its meaning is that seeing that disciples' welfare will not come about, they gather the holy Dharma
  མདོ་ཁ་ཅིག་ཏུ་དམ་པའི་ཆོས་ནུབ་པ་ཡང་མཛད་པ་བཅུ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་ཡ་གྱལ་གཅིག་ཏུ་བགྲངས་ལ། དེའི་དོན་ནི་གདུལ་བྱའི་དོན་དུ་མི་འགྱུར་བར་གཟིགས་ནས་
  དམ་བའི་ཆོས་བསྡུས་པ་ལ་དམ་པའི་ཆོས་ནུབ་པའི་མཛད་པ་ཞེས་བྱའོ།
• In the Precious Garland, "descending from the heavens" is counted as one of them; when our Teacher went to the Thirty-Three in order to train his mother and then returned to this world, the gods made a Bedurya staircase upon Mount Meru and so forth...
  རིན་ཆེན་ཕྲེང་བར། བདག་ཅག་གི་སྟོན་པ་ཡུམ་འདུལ་བའི་ཕྱིར་དུ་སུམ་ཅུ་རྩ་གསུམ་དུ་བྱོན་ནས་སླར་འཛམ་བུའི་གླིང་དུ་འབྱོན་པ་ན་ལྷ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་རི་རབ་ལ་བཻཌཱུརྱའི་ཐེམ་སྐས་བཙུགས་པ་སོགས་ལྷ་བབས་ཀྱི་མཛད་པ་ཡང་མཛད་པ་བཅུ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་ཡ་གྱལ་གཅིག་ཏུ་འདྲེན།
• The Uttaratantra Commentary mentions two modes of listing:
  • Where the Teacher descending from Tushita is listen as the first of the twelve
    སྟོན་པ་དགའ་ལྡན་ནས་འཕོ་བའི་མཛད་པ་དེ་མཛད་པ་བཅུ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་དང་པོར་འདྲེན་པའི་ཚུལ་གཅིག་དང་།
  • Where the Teacher takes birth as Śvetaketu is listed as the first
    སྟོན་པ་དམ་པ་ཏོག་དཀར་དུ་སྐྱེ་བ་བཞེས་པའི་སྐྱེ་བ་མངོན་པར་སྐྱེ་བའི་མཛད་པ་དེ་མཛད་པ་དང་པོར་འདྲེན་པའི་ཚུལ་གཅིག་དང་གཉིས་སུ་གསུངས།
    (Here 3+4 are counted as one in order to add this as the first)

རང་ལུགས་ཕྱི་མ་ལྟར་འདྲེན་པ་ཡིན།
Our system follows the latter.

འོ་ན་མཛད་པ་བཅུ་གཉིས་པོ་དེ་ཅིག་ཅར་དུ་མཛད་དམ་རིམ་ཅན་དུ་མཛད་ཅེ་ན།
Are the twelve deeds done simultaneously or gradually?

བདག་ཅག་གི་སྟོན་པས་སྤྱིར་མཛད་པ་བཅུ་གཉིས་པོ་ཐམས་ཅད་ཅིག་ཅར་དུ་མཛད་པ་ཡིན། འོན་ཀྱང་ཞིང་འདི་ཉིད་དུ་དགའ་ལྡན་དུ་སྐྱེ་བ་མངོན་པར་སྐྱེ་བའི་མཛད་པ་ནས། གྲོང་ཁྱེར་རྩྭ་མཆོག་ཏུ་མྱ་ངན་ལས་འདས་པའི་ཚུལ་བསྟན་པའི་བར་རྣམས་རིམ་ཅན་དུ་བསྟན་པ་ཡིན་ནོ།
In general, Our Teacher enacted all twelve deeds simultaneously. However, in this field (i.e. this world), from the deed of taking birth in Tushita and up to displaying passing beyond sorrow in Kushalanagar, they are displayed gradually.

རྒྱུད་བླ་མ་ལས།
།ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྐུ་ལས་མ་གཡོས་པར། །སྤྲུལ་པའི་རང་བཞིན་སྣ་ཚོགས་ཀྱིས། སྐྱེ་བ་མངོན་པར་སྐྱེ་བ་དང༌། །དགའ་ལྡན་གནས་ནས་འཕོ་བ་དང༌།
།ལྷུམས་སུ་འཇུག་དང་བལྟམས་པ་དང༌། །བཟོ་ཡི་གནས་ལ་མཁས་པ་དང༌། །བཙུན་མོའི་འཁོར་དགྱེས་རོལ་པ་དང༌། །ངེས་འབྱུང་དཀའ་བ་སྤྱོད་པ་དང༌།
།བྱང་ཆུབ་སྙིང་པོར་གཤེགས་པ་དང༌། །བདུད་སྡེ་འཇོམས་དང་རྫོགས་པར་ནི། །བྱང་ཆུབ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོ་དང༌། །མྱ་ངན་འདས་པར་གཤེགས་མཛད་རྣམས།
Uttaratantra:
Without wavering from the Dharmakaya, through various emanated entities:
Manifestly taking birth, transference from the abode of Tushita,
Entering the womb and being born, mastering the arts,
Frolicking with the retinue of consorts, renunciation and asceticism,
Proceeding to the essence of enlightenment, overcoming the demons,
Complete enlightenment, wheel of dharma, and proceeding to pass beyond sorrow - are the deeds.
