Categories and Instances

སྤྱིའི་མཚན་ཉིད་ཡོད་དེ། རང་གི་གསལ་བ་ལ་རྗེས་སུ་འགྲོ་བའི་ཆོས་དེ་དེ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Definition of category: Phenomenon that encompasses its instances.

When divided:

1. Type-category རིགས་སྤྱི།
2. Meaning-category དོན་སྤྱི།
3. Collection-category ཚོགས་སྤྱི།

Type-category (A) and collection-category (B) have four possibilities:

• Both: pot
• A + ¬B: object of knowledge
• ¬A + B: the two - pot and pillar
• ¬A + ¬B: the two - permanent and functioning thing

བྱེ་བྲག་གི་མཚན་ཉིད་ཡོད་དེ། ཁྱབ་བྱེད་དུ་འཇུག་པའི་རང་གི་རིགས་ཡོད་པ་ཅན་གྱི་ཆོས་དེ་དེ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Definition of instance: A phenomenon possessing its type which engages it as a pervader.

བུམ་པ་ཆོས་ཅན། དངོས་པོའི་བྱེ་བྲག་ཡིན་པར་ཐལ།
The subject - pot - it follows that it is a particularity of functioning thing because:

1. It is a functioning thing, ཁྱོད་དངོས་པོ་ཡིན།
2. It and functioning thing are Related as same nature, ཁྱོད་དངོས་པོ་དང་བདག་གཅིག་ཏུ་འབྲེལ།
3. There exist many common loci of 1) not being it and 2) being a functioning thing.
   ཁྱོད་མ་ཡིན་ཞིང་དངོས་པོ་ཡང་ཡིན་པའི་གཞི་མཐུན་པ་དུ་མ་གྲུབ་པའི་ཕྱིར།

དེ་ཡང་། དངོས་པོ་ཆོས་ཅན། བུམ་པའི་སྤྱི་ཡིན་པར་ཐལ། བུམ་པ་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་བྱེ་བྲག་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Moreover, it follows that functioning thing is a generality of pot because pot is its instances.
