Definition, Definiendum, and Illustration

མཚན་ཉིད་ཀྱི་མཚན་ཉིད་ཡོད་དེ། རྫས་ཡོད་ཆོས་གསུམ་ཚང་བ་དེ་དེ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Definition of definition: that which is a triply-qualified substantial existent.

There is a way of laying out what is a triply-qualified substantial existent: རྫས་ཡོད་ཆོས་གསུམ་འདྲེན་ཚུལ་ཡོད་དེ།

1. In general, it is a definition; སྤྱིར་མཚན་ཉིད་ཡིན་པ།
2. It is established on the basis of its illustrations; རང་གི་མཚན་གཞིའི་སྟེང་དུ་གྲུབ་པ།
3. It is not the definition for any anything other than its definiendum.
   རང་གི་མཚོན་བྱ་གང་ཡིན་པ་དེ་ལས་གཞན་པ་གང་གི་ཡང་མཚན་ཉིད་མ་ཡིན་པ་དང་གསུམ་པོ་དེ་འདྲེན་རིགས་པའི་ཕྱིར།

མཚོན་བྱའི་མཚན་ཉིད་ཡོད་དེ། བཏགས་ཡོད་ཆོས་གསུམ་ཚང་བ་དེ་དེ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Definition of definiendum: that which is a triply-qualified imputed existent.

There is a way of laying out what is a triply-qualified imputed existent: བཏགས་ཡོད་ཆོས་གསུམ་འདྲེན་ཚུལ་ཡོད་དེ།

1. In general, it is a definiendum; སྤྱིར་མཚོན་བྱ་ཡིན་པ།
2. It is established on the basis of its illustrations; རང་གི་མཚན་གཞིའི་སྟེང་དུ་གྲུབ་པ།
3. It is not the definiendum for any anything other than its definition.
   རང་གི་མཚན་ཉིད་གང་ཡིན་པ་གཅིག་པོ་དེ་ལས་གཞན་པ་གང་གི་ཡང་མཚོན་བྱ་མ་ཡིན་པ་དང་གསུམ་འདྲེན་རིགས་པའི་ཕྱིར།

མཚན་གཞིའི་མཚན་ཉིད་ཡོད་དེ། མཚན་ཉིད་ཀྱི་སྐབས་སུ་བབ་པའི་མཚོན་བྱ་མཚོན་པའི་གཞིར་གྱུར་པ་དེ་དེ་ཡིན་པའི་ཕྱིར།
Definition of illustration: the basis for illustrating the definiendum in the context of a definition.

དོན་བྱེད་ནུས་པའི་རྣམ་པར་གཞག་བྱའི་ཆོས་གསུམ་ཚང་བ་དེ། དོན་བྱེད་ནུས་པའི་མཚོན་བྱའི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of the definiendum of that able to perform a function: that which is a triply-qualified posited of that able to perform a function.

Way of laying out: འདྲེན་ཚུལ་ཡོད་དེ།

1. It is the definiendum of that able to perform a function; དོན་བྱེད་ནུས་པའི་མཚོན་བྱ་ཡིན་པ།
2. It is not the definiendum of any phenomenon other than that able to perform a function;
   དོན་བྱེད་ནུས་པ་ལས་གཞན་པའི་ཆོས་གང་གི་ཡང་མཚོན་བྱ་མ་ཡིན་པ།
3. It can be apprehended upon the illustrations of the definiendum of that able to perform a function.
   དོན་བྱེད་ནུས་པའི་མཚོན་བྱའི་མཚན་གཞིར་གང་བཟུང་བ་ལ་སྲིད་པ།

དངོས་པོའི་རྣམ་པར་འཇོག་བྱེད་ཆོས་གསུམ་ཚང་བ་དེ། དངོས་པོའི་མཚན་ཉིད་ཀྱི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of the definition of functioning things: that which is a triply-qualified positer of functioning thing.

Way of laying out: འདྲེན་ཚུལ།

1. It is the definition of functioning thing; དངོས་པོའི་མཚན་ཉིད་ཡིན་པ།
2. It is not the definition of any phenomenon other than functioning thing;
   དངོས་པོ་ལས་གཞན་པའི་ཆོས་གང་གི་ཡང་མཚན་ཉིད་མ་ཡིན་པ།
3. It can be apprehended upon the illustrations of the definition of functioning thing.
   དངོས་པོའི་མཚན་ཉིད་ཀྱི་མཚན་གཞིར་གང་བཟུང་བ་ལ་སྲིད་པ།

དོན་བྱེད་ནུས་པས་དངོས་པོ་མཚོན་པའི་གཞིར་གྱུར་པ་དེ། དངོས་པོའི་མཚན་གཞིའི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of illustration of functioning thing: that which is a basis that that able to perform a function to illustrate functioning thing.

i.e. the basis upon which the definition illustrates the definiendum.

When definition is divided: སྤྱིར་མཚན་ཉིད་ལ་དབྱེ་ན་གཉིས་ཡོད་དེ།

1. Definitions eliminating the discordant class རིགས་མི་མཐུན་སེལ་བའི་མཚན་ཉིད་དང་།
2. Definitions elimination wrong conceptions ལོག་རྟོག་སེལ་བའི་མཚན་ཉིད་གཉིས་ཡོད་པའི་ཕྱིར།

Example of something that is both: "A consciousness that is 1) newly non-deceptive and 2) non-conceptual and non-mistaken." (direct valid cognition)

• "Newly non-deceptive" eliminates non-valid cognition
• Either "non-conceptual" or "non-mistaken" eliminates inferential cognition
• Stating both is done in order to eliminate wrong conceptions thinking "are sense consciousnesses to which two moons appear direct valid cognition?" and asserting conceptual direct perception, respectively.
