Six Causes Five Results

བྱེད་རྒྱུ་ལྷན་ཅིག་འབྱུང་བ་དང་། །སྐལ་མཉམ་མཚུངས་པར་ལྡན་པ་དང་། །ཀུན་ཏུ་འགྲོ་དང་རྣམ་སྨིན་དང་། །རྒྱུ་ནི་རྣམ་པ་དྲུག་ཏུ་འདོད།
ABK: Causes are asserted to be of six types: Acting cause, simultaneously arisen cause, homogenous, concomitant, omnipresent, and fruitional cause.

Six Causes:

1. Acting cause (བྱེད་རྒྱུ།) - That observed as a common locus of 1) being a different substance from pot and 2) not acting to hinder the production of pot. (Not an actual cause.)
   བུམ་པ་དང་རྫས་ཐ་དད་ཀྱང་ཡིན། བུམ་པ་སྐྱེ་བ་ལ་གེགས་མི་བྱེད་པ་ཡང་ཡིན་པའི་གཞི་མཐུན་དུ་དམིགས་པ།
   e.g. pillar.

   1. Capable བྱེད་རྒྱུ་ནུས་ལྡན། - e.g. all compounded phenomena
   2. Incapable བྱེད་རྒྱུ་ནུས་མེད། - e.g. uncompounded phenomena
      
      

2. Simultaneously arisen cause (ལྷན་ཅིག་འབྱུང་བའི་རྒྱུ།) - That observed as a common locus of 1) being mutually simultaneous different substances and 2) not acting to hinder each others' production. (Not an actual cause.) ཕན་ཚུན་དུས་མཉམ་རྫས་ཐ་དད་ཀྱང་ཡིན། ཕན་ཚུན་སྐྱེ་བ་ལ་གེགས་མི་བྱེད་པ་ཡང་ཡིན་པའི་གཞི་མཐུན་པར་དམིགས་པ།
   e.g. the four elements that arise simultaneously, the five sense powers arising from the same collection of direct causes, the taste and form of molasses arising from the same collection of direct causes.
   
   

3. Concomitant cause (མཚུངས་ལྡན་གྱི་རྒྱུ།) - That observed as a common locus of 1) being mutually concomitant by way of the five aspects and 2) not acting to hinder each others' production. (Not an actual cause.)
   ཕན་ཚུན་མཚུངས་ལྡན་རྣམ་པ་ལྔ་མཚུངས་ཀྱང་ཡིན། ཕན་ཚུན་སྐྱེ་བ་ལ་གེགས་མི་བྱེད་པ་ཡང་ཡིན་པའི་གཞི་མཐུན་དུ་དམིགས་པ།
   e.g. the eye consciousness and the mental factors in its retinue.
   
   

4. Homogenous cause (སྐལ་མཉམ་གྱི་རྒྱུ།) - The producer of its later similar class that is similar to it.
   རང་གི་རིགས་འདྲ་ཕྱི་མ་རང་དང་འདྲ་བ་སྐྱེད་བྱེད།
   e.g. pot.
   
   

5. Omnipresent cause (ཀུན་འགྲོའི་རྒྱུ།) - The afflicted producer of the later affliction of the same level and which is its result. རང་གི་འབྲས་བུར་གྱུར་པའི་རང་དང་ས་གཅིག་པའི་ཉོན་མོངས་ཅན་ཕྱི་མ་སྐྱེད་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཉོན་མོངས་ཅན།
   e.g. attachment.
   
   

6. Fruitional cause (རྣམ་སྨིན་གྱི་རྒྱུ།) - That included within either non-virtue or contaminated virtue.
   མི་དགེ་བ་དང་། དགེ་བ་ཟག་བཅས་གང་རུང་གིས་བསྡུས་པ།
   e.g. the action of killing.

Five Results:

1. Dominant / Environmental Result བདག་པོའི་འབྲས་བུ། - Caused by 1.
   e.g. the impure container world-system.

2. Personally Made Result སྐྱེས་བུས་བྱེད་པའི་འབྲས་བུ། - Caused by 2 + 3.
   e.g. a harvest accomplished through effort by the farmer.

3. Causally Concordant Result རྒྱུ་མཐུན་གྱི་འབྲས་བུ། - Caused by 4 + 5.

   1. In experience མྱོང་བ་རྒྱུ་མཐུན་གྱི་འབྲས་བུ། e.g. born in higher realm but with short lifespan.
   2. In action བྱེད་པ་རྒྱུ་མཐུན་གྱི་འབྲས་བུ། e.g. born in higher realm but enjoys killing.

4. Fruitional Result རྣམ་སྨིན་གྱི་འབྲས་བུ། - Caused by 6.
   e.g. the five appropriated contaminated aggregates.

5. Separation Result བྲལ་བའི་འབྲས་བུ། - Not actual result.
   e.g. analytical cessations
