Substantial cause

དངོས་པོ་རང་གི་རྫས་རྒྱུན་དུ་གཙོ་བོར་སྐྱེད་བྱེད། དངོས་པོའི་ཉེར་ལེན་གྱི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition: Main producer of functioning thing as its own substantial continuity.

e.g. Product that is the cause of functioning thing དངོས་པོའི་རྒྱུར་གྱུར་པའི་བྱས་པ།

དངོས་པོའི་རྫས་རྒྱུན་སྔ་མ་དང་དོན་གཅིག
Mutually inclusive with the previous substantial continuity of functioning thing.

Continuities: རྒྱུན།

1. Substantial continuity རྫས་རྒྱུན།
   e.g. fire and smoke
2. Continuity of similar type རིགས་འདྲའི་རྒྱུན། / རིགས་རྒྱུན།
   Meaning: Something's substantial continuity and is of one type of isolate.
   e.g. first moment of fire and second moment of fire

མེའི་རིགས་རྒྱུན་ཡིན་ན་མེའི་རྫས་རྒྱུན་ཡིན་པས་ཁྱབ། ཚུར་མ་ཁྱབ།
Three possibilities: e.g. fire

• Both: second moment of fire
• Substantial but not similar type: smoke

སྒྲ་ལ་རིགས་འདྲའི་རྒྱུན་མེད།
There is no continuity of similar type for sound. Different explanations:

1. First moment does not transform into the entity of the second moment
   སྒྲའི་སྐད་ཅིག་དང་པོ་ནི་སྐད་ཅིག་གཉིས་པའི་ངོ་བོར་འགྱུར་བ་མེད།
2. It does, but it does not produce an awareness thinking "this is similar to this".
   དེར་འགྱུར་ཡང་འདི་དང་འདི་འདྲའོ་སྙམ་པའི་བློ་སྐྱེད་མི་ནུས།
   Choeden Rinpoche: because it gets quieter, as opposed to e.g. a pot, which mostly stays the same.

མཛོད་རང་འགྲེལ་ལས། ཟག་མེད་ལ་སྐལ་མཉམ་གྱི་རྒྱུ་མེད། (v1.38bc commentary)
Abhidharmakosha: The uncontaminated (first moment of the path of seeing) has no homogenous cause because it would also have to be uncontaminated, whereas there are no uncontaminated minds in the continua of those on the path of preparation and below.
