Designated terms

དོན་དེ་ལ་རྗེས་གྲུབ་ཏུ་བརྡའ་སྦྱར་བ་ཡང་ཡིན། དོན་དེའི་མིང་ཕལ་པ་ཡང་ཡིན་པའི་གཞི་མཐུན་པར་དམིགས་པ། དོན་དེའི་བཏགས་མིང་གི་མཚན་ཉིད།
Definition of being the designated term of an object: That observed as a common locus of 1) being a term that is subsequently applied to that object and 2) being a secondary term for that object.

Division:

1. Through similarity འདྲ་བ་རྒྱུ་མཚན་དུ་བྱས་པའི་བཏགས་མིང་།
   e.g. Speech calling a Brahmin's son with a big mouth and pug nose a "lion"
   བྲམ་ཟེའི་ཁྱེའུ་ཁ་ཆེ་སྣ་ཉག་ལ་སེང་གེ་ཞེས་བརྗོད་པའི་ངག
2. Through relation འབྲེལ་བ་རྒྱུ་མཚན་དུ་བྱས་པའི་བཏགས་མིང་།
   1. Causal relationship དེ་བྱུང་འབྲེལ་རྒྱུ་མཚན་དུ་བྱས་པའི་བཏགས་མིང་།
      1. Giving the name of the cause to the result རྒྱུ་མིང་འབྲས་ལ་བཏགས་པའི་བཏགས་མིང་།
         e.g. Speech calling sunlight "sun" ཉི་མའི་འོད་ཟེར་ལ་ཉི་མ་ཞེས་བརྗོད་པའི་ངག
      2. Giving the name of the result to the cause འབྲས་མིང་རྒྱུ་ལ་བཏགས་པའི་བཏགས་མིང་།
         e.g. Speech calling a correct proof statement "inference" སྒྲུབ་ངག་ཡང་དག་ལ། རྗེས་དཔག་ཅེས་བརྗོད་པའི་ངག
   2. Related as same nature བདག་གཅིག་འབྲེལ་རྒྱུ་མཚན་དུ་བྱས་པའི་བཏགས་མིང་།
      e.g. Speech calling a cloth whose corner is burnt "burnt cloth"
      རས་ཡུག་གི་ཁ་ཚར་ཚིག་པ་ལ་རས་ཡུག་ཚིག་ཅེས་བརྗོད་པའི་ངག
