Indefinite Articles and Imperative Markers

This uses the particles: ཅིག ཞིག ཤིག

These have various functions.

When affixed to nouns, they function as the indefinite article:

• “A tiger.” སྟག་ཅིག
• “A person.” མི་ཞིག
• “A child of the conquerors.” རྒྱལ་སྲས་ཤིག

When affixed to some Relative Pronouns and Adjectives, they function as nominal endings:

• “Whatever” ཅི་ཞིག “Whoever” སུ་ཞིག “Someone” འགའ་ཞིག
• “A while” ཡུད་ཙམ་ཞིག “A long time” ཡུན་རིང་བོ་ཞིག “That much” དེ་ཙམ་ཞིག
• “Whoever wishes to quickly protect both self and others...” [Lit. “Those who wish...”]
  གང་ཞིག་བདག་དང་གཞན་རྣམས་ནི། མྱུར་དུ་བསྐྱབ་པར་འདོད་པ་དེས།
• “Relying on the three jewels in whatever activities one engages in and whatever purposes one sees.”
  བྱ་བ་ཇི་འདྲ་ཞིག་བྱེད་པ་དང་དགོས་པ་ཅི་འདྲ་བ་ཞིག་མཐོང་ཡང་དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་ལ་བརྟེན་པ།

When affixed to the imperative form of verbs connected with an agent, they function as an imperative marker:

• “Look!” ལྟོས་ཤིག
• “Listen!” ཉོན་ཞིག

When affixed to the imperative form of verbs unconnected with an agent, they express a prayer or aspiration:

• “May all sentient beings possess happiness.” སེམས་ཅན་ཐམས་ཅད་བདེ་བ་དང་ལྡན་གྱུར་ཅིག
• “May there be auspiciousness.” བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཤོག་ཅིག
