The Relative Pronouns
The Thirty singles out the གང་སྒྲ། in this category, but later grammar texts also include: ཅི་སྒྲ། ཇི་སྒྲ། སུ་སྒྲ།
Their functions are:
- To mark a specific thing or person, technically marking a (rhetorical) question similar to “what”
- To mark a general thing or person, in the same way but similar to “whatever”
- To mark an actual question
Note: They are not limited to "what" but also encompass "who", "why", etc.
For example:
- “What is pervaded by what?” གང་ལ་གང་གིས་ཁྱབ།
- “If you ask, ‘What are the thoroughly established links?’ [They are] birth, and ageing and death.”
མངོན་པར་གྲུབ་པའི་ཡན་ལག་གང་ཞེ་ན། སྐྱེ་བ་དང་རྒ་ཤིའོ། - “The links that project and the links of how they project.” [Lit. “The links that are what project and the links of their projecting in what way.”] གང་གིས་འཕེན་པའི་ཡན་ལག་དང་ཇི་ལྟར་འཕེན་པའི་ཡན་ལག
- “Oh monks, whoever sees dependent-arising sees the Dharma.”
དགེ་སློང་དག་སུས་རྟེན་ཅིང་འབྲེལ་བར་འབྱུང་བ་མཐོང་བ་དེས་ཆོས་མཐོང་ངོ་། - “Whoever wishes to quickly protect both self and others...” [Lit. “Those who wish...”]
གང་ཞིག་བདག་དང་གཞན་རྣམས་ནི། མྱུར་དུ་བསྐྱབ་པར་འདོད་པ་དེས། - “Whose intelligence is pure and clear like the sun free from the clouds of the two obscurations...”
གང་གི་བློ་གྲོས་སྒྲིབ་གཉིས་སྤྲིན་བྲལ་ཉི་ལྟར་རྣམ་དག་རབ་གསལ་བས།
These particles also form various companion structures with the demonstrative pronoun (དེ་སྒྲ།), such as:
- ཇི་ལྟར། དེ་ལྟར། “In what way…? In that way…”
- ཇི་སྲིད། དེ་སྲིད། “As long as… for that long…”
- ཇི་བཞིན། དེ་བཞིན། “Like what… Like that…”
- ཇི་ལྟ་བུ། དེ་ལྟ་བུ། “Like what… Like that…”
- ཅི་འདྲ། དེ་འདྲ། “Like what… Like that…”
- ཅི་ཕྱིར། དེ་ཕྱིར། “Why…? Because…”
- ཅི་ཙམ། དེ་ཙམ། “Just how much…? Just that much…”
But these will also appear individually or even mismatched. These constructions will sometimes have a Ladon (usually a དུ་སྒྲ།) or an Indefinite Article (ཞིག ཅིག ཤིག) attached to them.
For example:
- “For as long as space remains, for as long as sentient beings remain, may I too remain to clear away the suffering of sentient beings.” [Lit. how long, that long]
།ཇི་སྲིད་ནམ་མཁའ་གནས་པ་དང༌། །འགྲོ་བ་ཇི་སྲིད་གནས་གྱུར་པ། །དེ་སྲིད་བདག་ནི་གནས་གྱུར་ནས། །འགྲོ་བའི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་སེལ་བར་ཤོག - “Just like the various emanations, such as horses, elephants, and chariots, conjured by a magician appear to him but do not exist at all; know all phenomena in this way.” [Lit. what like]
།སྒྱུ་མ་བྱེད་པ་དག་གིས་གཟུགས་སྤྲུལ་ཏེ། །རྟ་དང་གླང་པོ་ཤིང་རྟ་སྣ་ཚོགས་བྱས།
།དེ་ལ་ཇི་ལྟར་སྣང་བ་གང་ཡང་མེད། །ཆོས་རྣམས་ཐམས་ཅད་དེ་བཞིན་ཤེས་པར་གྱིས། - “For just how long those sufferings will be experienced…” སྡུག་བསྔལ་དེ་རྣམས་ཡུན་ཅི་ཙམ་དུ་ཉམས་སུ་མྱོང་བ་ནི།
- “Relying on the three jewels in whatever activities one engages in and whatever purposes one sees.”
བྱ་བ་ཇི་འདྲ་ཞིག་བྱེད་པ་དང་དགོས་པ་ཅི་འདྲ་བ་ཞིག་མཐོང་ཡང་དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་ལ་བརྟེན་པ།
